Multiple-Meaning Words, the Prefix un-,
and the Prefix en• Multiple-meaning words are words with more than one
meaning, but the same word origin. You will often need to look
at context clues to figure out which meaning is being used.
The prefix un- means "not or the opposite of." For example, the word
unbalanced means "not balanced or in disorder."
The prefix en- means "to put into," or "to cause to be." For example,
ensure means "to cause to be sure."
Each word below uses the prefix en- or un-. Use your
knowledge of the base word's meaning to write an original
sentence for each word. Identify the base words that are multiple-meaning
words and provide two definitions for each word.
