Vol. 25 • No. 7 • Feb. 8, 2016 Celebrating the King documents between his native tongue and English. He also translated world news into the Hawaiian language so that his people could keep abreast of the latest world events. Truly a bright young man. Later in life, Alexander became one of those world news stories when on January 11, 1855 he was crowned and given the royal title of King Kamehameha IV. On the day of his coronation, he stated, “Today we begin a new era.” The legacy of that era remains today with The Queen’s Hospital, one the first hospitals in the kingdom, and now, The Queen’s Medical Center. Founded by the King and Queen in 1859, it remains strong, in spite of all the political and social changes through the passing years. by Kalani L. H. Kaanaana, Coordinator QHS Native Hawaiian Health Program THE ECHOES OF A royal gun salute from Pūowaina marked the start of the day on February 9, 1855. This was not an everyday occasion, but a rather special way to mark the new King’s birthday. It was his twenty first birthday, but his first as King of the Hawaiian Islands. On the day of his birth, February 9, 1834, Alexander ‘Iolani Liholiho Keawenui Kamehameha was selected as the hānai or foster son of King Kamehameha III and his wife Queen Kalama and named heir designate to the throne. Alexander was the fourth born child of High Chief Mataio Kekūanāo‘a, Governor of O‘ahu, and Princess Elizabeth Kīna‘u, who was the Kuhina Nui or Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Hawai‘i. The young heir was groomed from birth to be the next King. He was educated at the Chiefs’ Children’s School near the present site of Royal School. At the age of 13 he began translating legal land MGH Top Staff Recognized NEWS ABOUT Molokai General Hospital’s Employees of the Quarter has recently been updated. It is a subject, in comparison with which all others sink into insignificance; for, our first and great duty is that of self-preservation.” The vision and leadership of Alexander ‘Iolani Liholiho Keawenui Kamehameha IV has proven invaluable, and through our work here at Queen’s, we continue the legacy every day, one patient at a time. Social Security Benefits will be held from 12:00 - 1:00 Time for Jan “I THINK YOU JUST KNOW when it’s time to retire,” mused Jan Hanashiro on the eve of her departure from Queen’s. After over four decades, Jan has nurtured many medical residents who were once QMC chief residents and are now in charge of programs throughout our state and beyond. “I’m a homebody…I’ve got no big plans for retirement,” she confessed. She will do some traveling to Korea and Japan, and hopefully the East Coast. “I’d love to go back east and see the fall colors once again,” she said wistfully. Jan’s an East Coast transplant, but that was a long time ago. She married, raised a family, and now is a grandmother of four almost grownups, plus those countless residents. “There were three each year for each specialty,” Jan explained. She was like a mother to many. Her fondest wish for her retirement party was to have as many of them attend as possible. “To see me, yes,” she said, “but more so, to see each other!” She sincerely thanks Kim Holliday for her efforts to make it happen. At her party, doctors came and went due to scheduling demands, but Jan got her wish. QHS/QMC President and CEO Art Ushijma remarked, “The legacy you leave is the relationships you’ve built.” He reported that Denny Meyer, MD, told him that Jan was responsible for the high level 4 pm on Friday, February 12, in the Queen’s Conference Center room 204. QHS Retirement Benefits for HNA only will be held on Friday, February 19, from 11:00 - 11:50 am in room 204. QHS Retirement Benefits for Teamsters and Non-Bargaining will be held on Friday, February 26, from 12:00 - 1:00 pm in room 200. Medicare-Coordination of Benefits will be presented on Jan Yamamoto Position: Admin Secretary, Medical Staff Years at Queen’s: 40.5 Plans: Volunteer at either an art or historical institution, travel and walking on the beach Future: Very excited about the door that’s going to open next of medical education [at Queen’s] today. Jan started out as the first secretary to the Flexible Residency Program and then supported the director of Medical Education & Chief Medical Residents for 22 years (18 of them in UH Tower). After moving to Harkness, she began to support the five medical departments and their chiefs. This included the Physician User Group (PUG) and coordinating Friday morning [medicine] Grand Rounds, as well as other duties. “I’ve had kind of a full plate,” she chuckled, “and let me tell you, taking minutes is a dying art!” Jan admitted to taking some time to reflect on her longevity at Queen’s and said, “I think it’s the sense of purposefulness… if we make a difference. How many people get a chance to work with legends? It’s a real gift. I’ve made so many wonderful friends; it’s been a lovely run. Thanks seems so inadequate after all this time.” She also expressed her thanks and deep love to her family. “I am who I am because of my wonderful family,” she said with contentment.
