1. Individual liberation
2. Systemic liberation
3. Cosmic liberation
Israel spent 430 years of slavery in Egypt.
They arrive in Sinai 3 months to the day
after they left Egypt.
Sinai is where we find
identity and mission.
Sinai is where we are given
the 10 Commandments.
Sinai is where the Divine and
the human come together.
My interest wasn't just in bringing
you out, I have something for you
to do and someone for you to be.
- God
3 Then
Moses went up to God, and the Lord called to
him from the mountain and said, “This is what you
are to say to the descendants of Jacob and what you
are to tell the people of Israel: 4 ‘You yourselves have
seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on
eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. 5 Now if
you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of
all nations you will be my treasured possession.
Although the whole earth is mine, 6 you will be for
me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These
are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.”
Exodus 19:3
God is inviting us to make
a covenant with Him.
God is inviting us into a
new identity and mission.
God is inviting us to deepen
the existing covenant God
made with Israel’s ancestors.
8 But
Abram said, “Sovereign Lord, how can I
know that I will gain possession of it?” 9 So the
Lord said to him, “Bring me a heifer, a goat and a
ram, each three years old, along with a dove and
10
a young pigeon.” Abram brought all these to
him, cut them in two and arranged the halves
opposite each other; the birds, however, he did
not cut in half.
Genesis 15:8-10
12 As
the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep
sleep, and a thick and dreadful darkness came
over him.
17 When
the sun had set and darkness had fallen,
a smoking firepot with a blazing torch appeared
and passed between the pieces.
Genesis 15:12, 17
Sinai is viewed as a wedding
ceremony between Israel and God.
God invites the people to make a
covenant—a marriage of sorts.
The divine and the human, coming
together in a sacred wedding ceremony.
4 necessary items at a Jewish wedding:
Mikveh: a place of ceremonial
cleansing [Exodus 19:10-14]
Ketubah: a written contract or
marriage agreement [Exodus 20]
A Sign: a visible, tangible
expression of the love [Exodus 20:8]
Chuppah: a place of covering, a
canopy [Exodus 19:17]
Kiddushin
(sanctification/dedication)
It’s a distinctive transition of your
identity. When you marry someone
else your identity shifts
Will you be my treasured possession?
Jesus is born and taken to Egypt.
He comes back and is baptized.
When He is baptized, God says, “This
is my SON in whom I’m well pleased.”
Then Jesus goes into the wilderness
for 40 days.
9 But
you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood,
a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you
may declare the praises of him who called you
out of darkness into his wonderful light.
1 Peter 2:9
