They arrive in Sinai 3 months to the day after they left Egypt. Sinai is where we find identity and mission. Sinai is where we are given the 10 Commandments. Sinai is where the Divine and the human come together. My interest wasn't just in bringing you out, I have something for you to do and someone for you to be. - God 3 Then Moses went up to God, and the Lord called to him from the mountain and said, “This is what you are to say to the descendants of Jacob and what you are to tell the people of Israel: 4 ‘You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. 5 Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, 6 you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.” Exodus 19:3 God is inviting us to make a covenant with Him. God is inviting us into a new identity and mission. God is inviting us to deepen the existing covenant God made with Israel’s ancestors. 8 But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord, how can I know that I will gain possession of it?” 9 So the Lord said to him, “Bring me a heifer, a goat and a ram, each three years old, along with a dove and 10 a young pigeon.” Abram brought all these to him, cut them in two and arranged the halves opposite each other; the birds, however, he did not cut in half. Genesis 15:8-10 12 As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep, and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him. 17 When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch appeared and passed between the pieces. Genesis 15:12, 17 Sinai is viewed as a wedding ceremony between Israel and God. God invites the people to make a covenant—a marriage of sorts. The divine and the human, coming together in a sacred wedding ceremony. 4 necessary items at a Jewish wedding: Mikveh: a place of ceremonial cleansing [Exodus 19:10-14] Ketubah: a written contract or marriage agreement [Exodus 20] A Sign: a visible, tangible expression of the love [Exodus 20:8] Chuppah: a place of covering, a canopy [Exodus 19:17] Kiddushin (sanctification/dedication) It’s a distinctive transition of your identity. When you marry someone else your identity shifts Will you be my treasured possession? Jesus is born and taken to Egypt. He comes back and is baptized. When He is baptized, God says, “This is my SON in whom I’m well pleased.” Then Jesus goes into the wilderness for 40 days. 9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 1 Peter 2:9
