In this special year, as I dedicate myself anew to your service, I hope we will all be reminded of the power of togetherness and the convening strength of family, friendship and good neighbourliness, examples of which I have been fortunate to see throughout my reign and which my family and I look forward to seeing in many forms as we travel throughout the United Kingdom and the wider Commonwealth. I hope also that this Jubilee year will be a time to give thanks for the great advances that have been made since 1952 and to look forward to the future with clear head and warm heart as we join together in our celebrations. I send my sincere good wishes to you all. ELIZABETH R. 1 INTRODUCTION 2012 gives us the opportunity to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee – and a time to reflect on what has been achieved over the last 60 years – a period when Queen Elizabeth II has proved constant during great changes. Building on the success of previous village festivals, a small band of volunteers has assembled a range of activities, listed in this programme, to give as many people as possible the chance to celebrate this remarkable milestone – one that has only ever been preceded by the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. With this obvious link to Queen Victoria it is fitting that, for the first time since her Diamond Jubilee in 1897, a Flotilla of sixty vessels will sail up the River Humber on Monday 4th June. The Riverside Walkway will be a fantastic vantage point for this once-in-a-lifetime experience, which promises to be a spectacular event. Starting with the Challenge Quiz on Tuesday 22nd May, then the Jubilee Market, followed by a varied series of evening events, then the Big Lunch and Jubilee Thanksgiving Service on Sunday 3rd June, and a tea party for senior citizens, there really is something for everyone. The culmination of our celebrations is the Festival Fun Day on Monday 4th June at the Riverside Walkway. There will be Viking re-enactments, displays, sports, shows and stalls, followed by the Flotilla sail-past and, just after 10 p.m., the lighting of our village Beacon and a spectacular fireworks display. Apart from our desire to give as much of the North Ferriby community as possible the opportunity to join in with the Jubilee celebrations, we are also seeking to raise funds for the upkeep of our Village Hall and to contribute to the good work of the North Ferriby Riding for the Disabled Group. Your participation in the Festival events will be a great help. We look forward to seeing you during the Ferriby Diamond Jubilee Festival. David Imrie, May 2012 2 W. CALVERT LTD. Bennett wrote “In A Chip in the Sugar, Graham would not accept that he is married to his mother, or Miss Ruddock, in A Lady of Letters, that she is not a public-spirited guardian of morals."
