ADVERTISING
Magazine space is no-cost to organizations or individuals caring for
animals who need homes. Monthly business sponsorship rates are
$300/150/75/35 for a full-page/half-page/quarter-page/business card ad
in color, and $200/100/50/25 for grayscale ads. A one year
subscription is $25.
ADOPTION CRITERIA
Each organization in Critter has its own adoption criteria. All organizations
require an adoption contract and a fee to recoup basic expenses. All will
require that your adoptee be a pet, not merely a utility animal for protection
or hunting. Most will ensure that the animals are spayed or neutered at
the time of adoption; those that don’t will require a spay/neuter contract
and a deposit that will be refunded upon proof of spay or neuter. Most will
want to visit your home and see where the pet will live. Because many
of these animals have not been well treated in the past, extra care is
taken to ensure their safety and happiness in the future.

big heart. He’s very
good with people and
other dogs. He loves
to play, loves to be
petted, and loves the
kiddie pool. He is a
smart dog and is
learning good
manners. Buddy would make a great companion for anyone
who likes a big dog.

and children, likes to go for
walks, and knows basic
obedience commands.

bonds closely with her humans.

male yellow Lab. He is
gentle, playful and loving
and is completely content
being with his human
companions. Murphy
loves other dogs and is

his foster home. He is also
very gentle around small
children. There is a
sweetness about Murphy
that makes him an extraordinary Lab. As a very young pup,
he never chewed inappropriate items, and he is not hyper.

(right), and a litter of newborn puppies. It was obvious this was his family and he needed help
for them as well as himself. He and Amy have been at Noah’s Arc for six years. We would
dearly love to see them placed in a home together.
We have over 100 indoor-outdoor runs with heated
floors and full heating and air conditioning. Our caring
and professional staff can always be relied upon to
provide the very best care possible for your pet.

The year is ending, but the animals keep coming. Can you help?
Since last February, nearly 90 cocker spaniels and cocker mixes have found forever homes thanks to the
volunteers at Cocker Companions Rescue. Help is needed, and there are many opportunities available.
Purchase a Coupon Book: $10 pet care coupon books are available for purchase. There are discounts for veterinary care, flea/
tick/heartworm prevention, grooming, dog treats, training, and even $25 off carpet cleaning! Contact CCR for this $200 value.
Agri Feed Angel Tree: Shop for your pet and one of ours, too. Photos of adopted alumni are visible as are pictures of dogs
waiting for homes. Agri Feed Pet Supply: 5716 Middlebrook Pike, Knoxville, TN 37921, (865) 584-3959.
Volunteer Your Time: Contact CCR to participate in the Turkey Creek Borders Books gift wrapping extravaganza. Adoptable
dogs will be there, and it is sure to be lots of furry fun! Alumni adopters (and dogs!) are especially encouraged to take part.
Open Your Home: Enjoy a pet—temporarily! All food, medical care, and grooming is provided by CCR. You provide the warm
and loving home. Short-term foster homes are also needed during the holidays to allow regular foster families to travel.
Be a Sponsor: Pick a pooch from the pack and be its guardian angel. Fund expenses like food, flea prevention, medication and
medical therapies, grooming and spay/neuter surgery.
Donate: Help fund a dog’s stay in rescue. Make a PayPal donation by visiting www.cockercompanions.com or mail a check
directly to CCR.
Spread the Word: Promote pet adoption and spay/neuter. Always.

BORDER COLLIE
RESCUE
Molly gets along well with other dogs.
She loves to play with other dogs and
toys. She is definitely an energetic girl.
She’s a typical. Border Collie and is
looking for an active family. Molly doesn't
enjoy riding in the car, but she is working
on it. We hope she will get over this as
she goes for more car rides. She is
housetrained, and is doing well with
learning house manners.
Max is a handsome 2 to 3 year old tricolored male with a medium coat. Max
has a very strong herding drive, which
developed into car chasing. This
resulted in his incarceration at a local
shelter. If he is kept busy, he has less
interest in cars; but he does need a
fenced yard for his safety.
Charley is a very handsome 1 year old traditionallymarked Border Collie. He is housetrained and has very
nice house manners. He rides well in the car and does
well with other dogs, but he strongly prefers a home with
no cats. He is very energetic and needs an active family.

Feral cats. Abandoned by their human families or simply lost, unsterilized
housecats eventually band together in groups called colonies. Without
human contact for a prolonged period, the cats revert to a wild state. They
make homes wherever they can find food. Mothers teach their kittens to
avoid humans and to defend themselves. Their numbers steadily
increase, even if meager scraps are all the food to be had. No one knows
exactly how many feral cats live in the United States, but the number is
estimated in the tens of millions. They are often wrongly portrayed as
disease-ridden nuisances, responsible for endangering native species. As
a consequence, feral feline communities are frequently rounded up and
because they have had little or no human contact and are thus
unadoptable, they are killed.
Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is a comprehensive plan where entire feral
colonies are humanely trapped, then evaluated, vaccinated, and neutered
by veterinarians. Kittens and cats that are tame enough to be adopted are
placed in good homes. Adult cats are returned to their familiar habitat to live
out their lives under the watchful care of
sympathetic neighborhood volunteers. TNR
works. Cat populations are gradually reduced.
Nuisance behaviors associated with breeding,
such as the yowling of females or the
spraying of toms, are virtually eliminated.
Disease and malnutrition are greatly reduced.
The cats live healthy, safe, and peaceful lives
in their territories. Learn more about feral cats
and TNR at www.alleycat.org.

UT College of Law Establishes Student
Animal Legal Defense Fund Chapter
The University of Tennessee
College of Law has partnered
with the Animal Legal Defense
Fund to create a student
chapter of the national
nonprofit group, whose
mission is to protect the lives
and advance the interests of animals through the
legal system.
The new chapter will advocate for animal law
courses to be added to curriculums; host speakers,
debates, panels and conferences; write law review
articles for journals dedicated to animal law; raise
awareness on campus about animal issues; and
volunteer to do legal research and write for local
law firms.
In 2000, only nine law schools offered courses in
animal law; today, the list has grown to more than
100, including UT.
Animal law looks at issues involving companion
animals, wildlife, animals used in entertainment and
animals raised for food and used in research.

A Group for Animal Shelter and Rescue Group workers
In the work of caring for animals it is natural for people to
experience compassion fatigue from working very hard and
caring very much. Although animal professionals care very
much, sometimes the death of animals, the number of needy/
homeless animals, and interacting with the public can cause
the most giving of hearts to become tired.

Beyond Food, Water, Shelter, and Sanitation:
PROPER CARE AND ATTENTION FOR COMPANION ANIMALS
Recommendations from the Knoxville Veterinary Medical Association
The Knoxville City Animal Ordinance requires that companion animals be
provided food, water, shelter, and sanitary living conditions. In addition, the
ordinance says that a person keeping an animal must provide proper
care and attention for the animal. (Sec. 5-23 (d)).
Since “proper care and attention” are not further defined in the city
ordinance, the Knoxville Veterinary Medical Association provides the
following guidance regarding the meaning of these words.
PROPER CARE OF A COMPANION ANIMAL
A pet’s health and welfare depends on more than just food, water, shelter,
and sanitary living conditions. Proper care of a pet requires active
protection from harm and regular maintenance of good hygiene.
PREVENTION OF FLEAS AND TICKS
Fleas and ticks are not just an irritant to an animal. They can cause
serious disease.
Proper Care:
Monthly application of an effective topical flea and tick preventive will
ensure that a cat or dog is free of external parasites. Highly effective
monthly topical preventives are available through a veterinarian and some
pet supply stores. Other less effective preventives are flea collars,
sprays, some topical drops, and shampoos available at pet stores.
Improper care:
Flea and tick infestation may lead to:
· Severe itching, intense scratching and rubbing
· Inflamed skin with bleeding or open sores
· A thin coat with bald patches
· Flea and tick-borne infections
· Anemia and even death in cases of severe infestation
· Exposure of people to flea or tick bites, and related infections
Heavy infestations may be indicated by large numbers of obvious fleas or
ticks, open sores, severe itching, self-mutilation, or pale white gums.
When heavy infestations are noted, KVMA recommends that the pet be
seen by a veterinarian. As all itchy skin disease is not caused by fleas,
KVMA recommends ongoing care with a veterinarian for severe skin
disease not associated with fleas or ticks.
PREVENTION OF INTESTINAL WORMS
Intestinal worms (such as hookworms, roundworms, tapeworms, and
whipworms) are easily transmitted, are not always visible in feces, and
are not all treatable with over-the-counter deworming medicine. Some
intestinal worms may also be transmitted to people, especially to children.
Proper Care:
Year round heartworm prevention also provides protection against most
intestinal worms. Yearly fecal exams by a veterinarian are the only way
to ensure that a cat or dog is free of intestinal parasites. Feces should be
removed routinely to minimize contamination of the environment and
exposure of people.
Improper care:
Intestinal parasites in dogs and cats may cause diarrhea, blood in the
stool, weight loss, or vomiting.
KVMA recommends consultation with a veterinarian if there is evidence of
intestinal parasites, diarrhea, vomiting, or emaciation.
PROPER GROOMING
Proper Care:
Bathing, brushing, toe nail trims, ear cleaning, and dental care are all
aspects of proper grooming.
Improper care:
If grooming needs are ignored, a pet may develop any of the following
problems:
· Matted fur that harbors parasites and irritates the skin
· Heavy mats causing sores, scabs, or maggot infestation
· Toenails that curve or curl into the skin, impede walking, and become
embedded in the paws
· Painful ears that become bloody and swollen
· Infected or broken teeth that cause pain or prevent a pet from eating
· A collar too tight that may grow into the skin, or cause skin irritation
If there are signs of improper grooming causing a pet distress or pain,
KVMA recommends that the pet see a veterinarian immediately.
PROPER WEIGHT
Proper care:
Pets need regular, measured meals. Pets need species-appropriate,
nutritionally balanced food. Many medical conditions may cause extreme
weight loss or weight gain. You should not be able to see a pet’s ribs, but
you should easily be able to feel them. If you cannot easily feel the ribs,
your pet may be overweight. If you can see the ribs, the pet may be
underweight.
Improper care:
Failure to maintain proper weight may lead to the following problems:
· Underfeeding can result in insufficient body fat, weakness, and even death.
· Not feeding species-appropriate food can result in many symptoms of poor
health, such as a dull and thinning coat, chronic diarrhea, vomiting, and
frequent illness due to a weakened immune system.
· Overfeeding can result in obesity preventing the animal from moving about,
predisposing to arthritis, pressure sores and difficulty breathing.
Emaciated animals have easily visible ribs, pelvic bones, and shoulder
bones. The abdomen may be very sunken in behind the rib cage. The eyes
may be sunken into the head. Morbidly obese animals may be unable to rise
or walk well. They may have pressure sores from lying down, and may be
lying in their own excrement. There is no “waist” when viewing these
animals from above. The ribs are not at all palpable. Emaciated animals and
morbidly obese animals that cannot rise or walk require immediate medical
attention.
PHYSICAL SAFETY
A pet needs protection from both human and environmental threats. People
need to be safe from roaming aggressive or nuisance pets.
Proper care:
A pet should be safely contained to provide protection from traffic, roaming
animals, other physical danger, and harassment by people. Fences are the
best protection. A pet should have protection from extremes in temperature
(below 32 degrees or above 95 degrees), wind, rain, sun and snow. Indoors,
in a garage, basement, or a dry dog house are good options. During hot
weather, the shelter should have adequate ventilation and air flow.
Improper care:
Physical injury, behavior problems and death can result from an owner’s
benign neglect or, at worst, intentional harm. KVMA recommends aggressive
intervention where there is evidence of abuse or neglect, or if pets are
exposed to extreme weather conditions. Aggressive, territorial or roaming pets
may harm people or other pets, and should be addressed immediately.
EXERCISE
Exercise is essential to both the mental and physical well-being of a pet.
Proper Care:
Every healthy pet needs to be able to walk, run, or play on a regular basis.
Continuous physical restraint such as tethering by a chain, cable, rope, or
continuous confinement in a pen, is counter to an animal’s need for mental
stimulation and physical exercise, and is not proper care.
Improper care:
Lack of regular exercise, socialization, and mental stimulation may lead to
behavior problems such as self-mutilation, destructive behavior, fear, and
aggression. KVMA recommends intervention if pets are constantly tethered or
caged without exercise or social interaction.
PROPER ATTENTION FOR A COMPANION ANIMAL
Companion animals are social creatures by nature. They need companionship
and regular interaction. They need physical exercise, medical attention and
social interaction.
Proper Attention:
A pet needs a relationship with at least one other living being. Chronic isolation
is unnatural and unhealthy for a companion animal. Human contact that occurs
only when food and water are replenished does not constitute proper attention.
Pets also need medical attention from a veterinarian on a yearly basis.
Vaccines must be kept up to date in the best interest of the pet and public
health. If a pet has a medical ailment, a veterinarian should be consulted.
Pets make the best companions when trained in basic obedience. Pets learn
best with positive reinforcement.
Improper Attention:
A companion animal without companionship may be a lonely, bored,
depressed, or anxious creature. A companion animal that has neither human
nor animal companionship may become sick, anti-social, or both.
Abusive training behavior such as hitting or throwing a pet is not acceptable.
Companion animals without routine medical attention may harbor infections
transmissible to people or other animals. They may have unknown painful
diseases affecting their everyday lives and ultimately leading to suffering and
death. A pet owner should establish a relationship with a veterinarian to keep a
pet healthy, prevent disease, and treat disease that may occur.

Pilots are donating their time, planes and fuel to transport
dozens of dogs a month from overcrowded shelters where
they face almost certain death to rescue groups and shelters
several states away that are committed to finding them
homes.
Ozzie is a 9 year old white
and brindle male. He is a big
dog, who has previously
been in a home with
children. Ozzie is smallanimal friendly.
The mission-of-mercy relocations are flown by general
aviation pilots who have signed on with the recently formed
Pilots N Paws, a Web-based message board where pilots can
access information about animals in need.
Once the electronic connection is made, dogs plucked by
rescuers from death row — mostly in the South where
sterilization rates are low and pet overpopulation is rampant
— are loaded onto small planes and flown one, two or six at a
time to rescue groups and shelters that have available space.
“These are wonderful dogs that simply had the bad luck of
winding up in a place where there are too many pets in
shelters,” says Pilots N Paws co-founder Jon Wehrenberg
of Knoxville, Tenn. The retired manufacturing executive and
weekend pilot has flown scores of dogs from high-kill shelters
this year. Earlier this month, his mission involved six small
mixed-breed dogs from Knoxville’s Young-Williams Animal
Center.
The happy half-dozen enjoyed a smooth-sailing, 90-minute
flight to Greensboro, N.C., where they were met by radio
station executive Jennifer Hart, head of Animal Rescue &
Foster Program, who had arranged foster care. One dog has
been adopted; the others are receiving additional attention,
socialization and training and should be ready for new homes
soon after Thanksgiving.
Katie (upper right) and Big
Man (lower right) are
Katrina evacuees, whose
family had to surrender them
here because of family
distress. They are very
“connected” so they will be
placed together only. Both
are in good health and are
safe with small dogs. Big
Man is very social. Katie is
very affectionate in a more
private way. A fenced yard is
a must, as they enjoy
sunbathing and romping with
their toys!
Chrissy is a 4 year old
brindle female Greyhound, who is a very
playful, active, and
happy dog. Chrissy is
very outgoing but is not
small dog or cat friendly.
Beginning of the journey
“Pilots N Paws has given about 20 of our animals a second
chance,” says Tim Adams, executive director of the YoungWilliams shelter, which euthanizes 70% of the animals that
land there. “We take in 17,000 animals a year, and Knoxville
simply isn’t big enough… to get new homes for them here.
Twenty animals saved may not sound like much, but every
one of them matters.”
Pilots N Paws started operating in February soon after
Wehrenberg offered to fly a Doberman in Florida to his pal
Debi Boies of Landrum, S.C., who is a retired nurse, horse
breeder and long-time rescuer. He began asking questions
about the rescue world and learned about the passionate
underground railroad of animal lovers who orchestrate dayslong road journeys to save some of the 4 million to 6 million
animals destined for euthanasia in U.S. shelters annually.
“I’d had no idea of the number of animals being euthanized,
and the ordeal people and animals were going through in
transports,” Wehrenberg says. “Pilots love to fly. I believed
that if we created a means for them to discover situations
where they could fly and also save animals, many would do
it.”
Keegan is a 2½ year old male
Greyhound. He has separation
anxiety and is going to need a
home where his crate time and
alone time are minimal. He is a
very loving boy and loves to be
with his people.
Sandy is a 4 year old dark
brindle female. She would be
best suited in an adult home
or in a home with adults and
older children. She is fine
with other dogs.
