Elmbrook Student Device Use Agreement All students in grades 410 and other students in various grades and classrooms will be issued a technology device for use in school and at home. The mission of the 1:1 program in Elmbrook is to support an engaging learning environment for all learners with consistent and dedicated access to technology. This document provides students and their parents/guardians with information about caring for a device, using it appropriately, and being a good digital citizen. To understand the expectations of the School District of Elmbrook, students and their parents/guardians are also responsible for reviewing the District’s Appropriate Use of Technology Policy (#6177) . Ownership of the Technology Device The School District of Elmbrook retains sole right of possession of the technology device. The device is th th loaned to students for educational purposes for a oneyear (KG3rd grade), twoyear (4 /5 grade), threeyear (middle school) or fouryear (high school) period. Moreover, Elmbrook’s administrative staff and faculty retain the right to collect and/or inspect devices at any time. Receiving Your Technology Device In 201516, each student receiving a Chromebook or iPad will be issued a device, charger and protective case at the start of the school year. Each student will receive an introduction to the device and, along with a parent or guardian, must sign an Elmbrook Student Device Use Agreement before a device is issued and can be taken home. All students who enroll in the District after the first week of school will be able to pick up a device from the library with a signed Device Use Agreement. Responsibility When Using the Technology Device Students are solely responsible for the device issued to them and must adhere to the following: ● Students must bring their device to school every day fully charged. ● Students must treat their device with care and never leave it in an unsecured location. ● Students are advised to keep their device in a protective case and backpack when traveling. ● Heavy objects should never be placed on top of the technology device. ● Should damage occur, students must promptly complete a device support form and submit the device to the library for repair. ● Students may not remove or interfere with the serial number and other identification tags. ● Students may not attempt to change the physical structure of the device or case, including decorating with stickers, writing or anything else that would be difficult to remove or repair. ● Students may not attempt to install or run any operating system other than the original ChromeOS or Apple iOS supported by the district. ● Students are encouraged to keep their devices clean, using only a soft, dry antistatic, or microfiber cloth, or premoistened eyeglass lens tissues to clean the device. ● If a student believes his/her device is lost or stolen, he/she should report it immediately to the school library. Responsibility for Electronic Data Students are solely responsible for any apps or extensions on their device that are not installed by a member of the district technology staff. To protect from data loss, students are encouraged to store all files in their Google Drive Account, which is backed up regularly by the District. Students needing help recovering files can first try to restore a previous version in Google Apps, and then reach out to Technology Support ([email protected]) for file recovery. Elmbrook Student Device Use Agreement Digital Citizenship Digital citizenship will be taught to students in grades KG 12, and will be based on the following five conditions. Families are also encouraged to support these behaviors and expectations at home. 1. I will show respect for myself through my actions. I will select online names that are appropriate, I will consider the information and images that I post online. I will consider what personal information about my life, experiences, and/or relationships I post. I will not be obscene. 2. I will ensure that the information, images and materials I post online will not put me at risk. I will not publish my personal details, contact details or a schedule of my activities. I will report any attacks or inappropriate behavior directed at me. I will protect passwords, accounts and resources. 3. I will show respect to others. I will not use electronic mediums to antagonize, bully, harass or stalk other people. I will show respect for other people in my choice of websites, I will not visit sites that are degrading, pornographic, racist or inappropriate. I will not abuse my rights of access and I will not enter other people's private spaces or areas. 4. I will protect others by reporting abuse, not forwarding inappropriate materials or communications; I will moderate unacceptable materials and conversations, and not visit sites that are degrading, pornographic, racist or inappropriate. 5. I will request permission to use resources. I will suitably cite any and all use of websites, books, media etc. I will acknowledge all primary sources and respect copyright guidelines. I will validate information. I will use and abide by the fair use rules. I will act with integrity. Internet Activity Monitored The district utilizes an Internet content filter that is in compliance with the federally mandated Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA). All devices, regardless of physical location (in or out of school), will have all Internet activity monitored and reported by the district. Internet Access at Home To insure all students have access to the Internet at home the District has purchased a limited number of cellular (hotspot) devices which can be checked out from middle and high school libraries. These filtered devices, provide Internet access to anyone, anywhere and will be distributed based on need. Returning Your Technology Device At the end of the school year, students will turn in their devices, chargers and cases. If in grades 412, students will be reissued the same device in 201617. Failure to turn in a device and its accessories (case, power supply) will result in the student being charged for the full replacement cost. The District may also file a report of stolen property with the local law enforcement agency. Similarly, a student that transfers or withdraws from Elmbrook must turn in his or her technology device, power supply and case to the library on or before one’s last day of attendance. Failure to turn in the device will result in the student being charged the full replacement cost. The District may also file a report of stolen property with the local law enforcement agency. Spare Equipment and Lending If a student’s device is not working, each school has a limited number of spare devices for use while the student’s device is repaired or replaced. This agreement remains in effect for loaned computers. If your device is not working, notify your teacher(s) and take it to the library for repair. The student may not opt to keep an inoperable device to avoid doing class work. Elmbrook Student Device Use Agreement Technology Device Repair and Replacement The District is responsible for accidental damage incurred during the life of the device. Accidental damage includes normal wear and tear, mechanical breakdown, and faulty construction. All accidental damage reported to the School Library will be repaired with replacement parts necessary to restore the device or, if required, a replacement will be provided. All repair work must be completed by District staff. A student and his/her family may be responsible for any damage that is determined to be intentional, or caused by misuse or abuse.
