* Germination treated/untreated Test: Seed treatment applied in the laboratory. This test gives an indication of relative
germination performance of 200 fungicide treated seeds and 200 untreated seed under laboratory germination test conditions.
Field germination conditions are more variable and response to seed treatment will be more variable.
**Tetrazolium test gives a good indication of germination capacity in most cases. It is not suitable for carryover old seed. For
further information see seed testing webpage.

1. Seed Sampling
It is vitally important that submitted samples are representative of the lots from which they are
drawn; otherwise calculations based on test result information may be inaccurate and lead to costly
errors. To take a representative sample, take a number of small samples from different parts of the
bulk seed lot.
2. Sample Size & Weights
At a minimum send the quantity listed in the pricelist above. Samples submitted for Thousand Seed
Weight test which is a non-destructive test can be used for other tests e.g. 700g beans sample will
be sufficient for both a TSW and a germination test. However for a bean Germination (400g), +
Ascochyta (300g) + bean stem nematode (500g) a sample of 1200g will be required.
3. Test Duration i.e. from start of test
Seed tests such as germination take time for the natural germination process to occur and all
relevant seedling structures to appear and be assessed by a seed analyst. Test times vary according
to species. Up to seven days chilling of seeds and application of chemicals may be required to break
seed dormancy. The test times for the more commonly tested species are as follows:
Barley 7 - 14 days
Wheat 7 – 12 days
Oats 10 - 14 days
Oilseed Rape - 10 days
Beans/Peas 10 - 14 days
Tetrazolium Test: For cereals the test time is one working day from the initiation of the test. Seed
Health tests typically take 7-10 days from the initiation of the test.
Delays in processing samples may arise during times of peak service demand. Aim to get your
samples delivered to the lab early to ensure you get your test results before planned sowing date.
4. What to do if you wish to submit a sample for testing:
Fill a suitable container with the minimum sample quantity required for test(s) required, ensuring
that the sample is representative of the lot. Clearly label container
Include the following information:
-Your name, address and phone number.
-Kind of seed
-Variety
-Year of harvest
-Seed treatment (dressing) if any
-Your reference
-Test(s) required
Include the appropriate fee, preferably a cheque made payable to the “Department of Agriculture”.
Post or deliver the sample to the address below. You will receive a VAT receipt.
