Abstract
With generations changing fast, many adults teach their children in a wrong way,
such as over spoiled or over indulged. Gradually, children have the habit to rely on
their parents and they will think everything can be resolved if mom is here and they
can’t be responsible for anything. It’s the reason why there are more and more “ma
ma boys”. Many mothers are proud of themselves because their sons love to be with
them, but they ignore that this makes their sons suffer from Oedipus Complex.
Oedipus Complex or Electra Complex is just a growing-up experience that everyone
has, and most people can pass this stage smoothly. However, we must not ignore it;
otherwise, it will become a serious problem. Can you imagine there is something
between Sphinx and King Oedipus? Could you believe Sphinx is also associated with
Oedipus Complex? Let’s dig it out!

I. Introduction
I.1. The Motivation of the Study
Ancient Greece is one of people's civilization birthplaces. This time, we want to
find out the story of a famous ancient Greek king, Oedipus. We heard of him in our
English course and we really wanted to know more about his story. To comprehend
the story, we wrote this paper. Hope you will enjoy it.
I.2. The Purpose of the Study
(1)What is the Oedipus Complex?
(2)Why do they love their own mother?
(3)When can the Oedipus Complex happen?
(4) What can we do when it happens or how to avoid it?
The reason we research is we want to find out the answers to these questions.
II. Methods
For this research, we tried a lot of ways to complete, such as looking up something in
reference, newspapers and magazines, and we also surfed the Internet. Not only some
famous websites but some blogs we browsed so that we can get more information. To
present the most perfect paper, we spent our break time and holidays discussing. I hope
you will enjoy the report.
III. Findings／ Discussions
III.1. Definition of Oedipus Complex
<Loving mama> is also known as the Oedipus Complex. In the psychoanalysis
theory, the impulsive force is the most original and natural part of desire. Briefly
speaking, the Oedipus Complex is a kind of psychological tendency of men. No
matter how old they are, they always follow and love their mothers. It is called
Oedipus Complex, which is to be an emotional burden called “mama boy.”

III.2. Story of Oedipus Complex
Oedipus was a tragic figure in Greek
mythology. He was the son of king Laius and
Queen Jocasta. When Oedipus was born, his
father wished to get a prophecy, which said that
the prince would grow up safely, but he would
murder the king and marry his mother. Because
King Laius was so angry, he left Oedipus on a
mountain and let him die there.
Before long, the baby was found by a shepherd and raised by King Polybus and
Queen Merope in the city of Corinth. Oedipus didn’t know that Polybus and Merope
weren’t his real parents. However, someone told him the truth, so Oedipus went to ask
the god. Unfortunately, the god didn’t tell him who his father and mother were, but
God said he would kill his father and marry his mother.
To find out the riddle, Oedipus left Corinth. On the way to a country nearby, he
met an old man in a chariot. They disputed who should get out of the way;
accidentally, Oedipus killed the old man. However he didn’t know that the old man
was his father.
He continued going to Thebes. When he
arrived, he met a monster named Sphinx. This
monster enjoyed testing people who wanted to
go across the road. If they couldn’t answer the
question, he would eat him or her, so all people
were afraid of Sphinx. Sphinx also asked
Oedipus a riddle. The riddle was “What walks
on four legs in the morning, two legs in the
afternoon and three legs in the evening?”
Oedipus replied “human”, and this was correct
answer. Everyone thought of Oedipus as a hero.
Oedipus not only defeated the monster but won
the throne, so he married the dead king’s widow,
his mother, Jocasta.

Oedipus and Jocasta had two sons and two
daughters after they got married. Suddenly, their
country had a big disaster—plague. So Oedipus
asked someone to go to temple to get an oracle
and then he could deal with the adversity. The god
said that there was a promiscuous man in the
country who killed his father and married his
mother. If they could find out and punish him, the
disaster would be all right. After Oedipus found
out the truth, he couldn’t accept the fact that the
murderer was himself. Blinding himself, Oedipus
left Thebes. When Jocasta knew that she had
married her son, she killed herself.
III.3. Causes of Oedipus Complex
The reason of the Oedipus Complex is that mothers usually spend more time with
their sons than fathers, and it is more likely that the child will develop closer
relationship with the mother. They will probably fight against their fathers because
they envy their fathers, who can be much closer to their mothers. Interestingly, among
all of the cases with the Oedipus Complex, the mothers are beautiful and sexy enough
to attract them. They peek their mother taking a bath on purpose or take a bath
together since they are little boys. Besides, they maybe sleep together all the time.
These factors will make them fall in love with and depend on each other.
III.4. Impact of Oedipus Complex
Males with Oedipus Complex often tend to have an unhappy relationship with
their wives. Once they hear their wives talking something bad about their mothers,
they would get into an unbearable mood, though, sometimes, they even feel guilty. As
a result, these people often argue with their wives; therefore, the gap between the
couple will become bigger and bigger and finally get into a situation out of control.
What's worse, the males are afraid of showing their opinions; they dare not to
overcome any difficulties by themselves. These men are afraid of losing their mother's
love, so they test their mother's feelings all the time. Because they are extremely close
to their mothers, their ways of thinking and behaviors tend to be like females
When they get into the society, they can't get along well with other people under

this action mode. If no one orders them to do something, they cannot take an action.
They don't have egos so their spirits get weak easily. These people are used to waiting
for other people’s help rather than helping others.
III.5. Resolution of Oedipus Complex
Oedipus Complex, which is a process in which sons grow up and are independent
from mothers, and this condition leads to an abnormal and attached relationship.
Because sons depend overly on mothers, this causes the situation that boys can’t turn
into mature men smoothly.
If sufferers want to resolve the Oedipus Complex, and let themselves get rid of
unhealthy attachment, they have to do following steps. First, mothers and sons have to
admit that they have abnormal and close relationship, and face the truth honestly.
Second, sons should get rid of relying overly on mothers, learning how to make
decisions by themselves, and take care of themselves. Mothers should stop improper
and excess supplies, not focus on children all day long, and learn to believe that
children can solve problems and setbacks in the life by themselves. Third, they should
try to let fathers be fathers, and make fathers be responsible for the burden that they
should be sons’ sex role model. If it is a single parent family, we can help children to
look for a male role worth follwing; for example, Nelson Polihlahla Mandela, Martin
Luther King, Abraham Lincoin, and Wright brothers. Or we can seek a male role
worthy of imitating; for example, a clergyman, a missionary, and a teacher. Let these
roles lead children to learn how to be an independent man, and find the responsibility
of his age.
If the Oedipus Complex of a sufferer is serious, he should seek professional
counseling psychologists for help, because counseling can help sufferers to find the
solving key to the Oedipus Complex, remove the part of attached relationship which
is serious and unhealth, and continue to rebuild their life.
III.6. Cases of Oedipus Complex
III.6.1 The Real Cases of Oedipus Complex
(1) An unidentified doctor slept with his wife and his mother together.
A doctor told his wife that he had slept with his mother until he was nineteen years
old. However, the doctor’s mother had kept sleeping with him after he had got
married. What’s more, she had slept between her son and her son’s wife every night.

Psychiatrist said this man had a severe Oedipus Complex.
(2) A man has admired his mother for many years.
A 26-year-old man accidentally saw his mother bathing when he was a college
student. After that, he still peeked his mother bathe. What’s worse, he secretly took off
his mother’s clothes and watched her breast while she was sleeping. Thus, he was
remedied by psychiatrist.
(3) Chiang Kai-shek had suffered from Oedipus Complex:
Chiang Kai-shek, a Chinese famous political figure, who had admired his mother,
too. When he was a child, he loved to play with her mother all day long, and slept
with his mother at night, which was mentioned in his diary. Chiang Kai-shek had
hated his father; he even had had the idea to marry his mother. When his mother died,
he also didn’t want to let his parents be buried together.
III.6.2.Related Books of Oedipus Complex
《Slaap!》
A story was about a long-term insomnia woman and a man
with Oedipus Complex. Both of them had heavy stress but they
could comfort each other. Although they were unable to resolve
any problems, they still gave warmth and company to each other.
III.6.3.Related Movies of Oedipus Complex
(1) 《The Cement Garden》
The leading man, Jack, killed his father and took his mother’s
love away. After his mother died, Jack transported his love to his
sister…
(2) 《Hallam Foe》
The seventeen-year-old boy, Hallam Foe, was a weird teenager
who admired his mother very much. After he left his mother, going
to another town, he met a woman who looked like his mother.
Then they started a series of stories…

III.7.Which Horoscope Is Easy to Suffer from Oedipus Complex
Some men will become "mama boys" because of personality or family. Even
though they have girlfriends, they still abide by their mother's determinations.
According to news report, the top five horoscopes of men who are addict to their mom
are as below:
Top One: Cancer
Classic saying: No one could reach my mother's merits!
Cancer boys love family, especially their moms. To them,
"mother" is a sign of their family, and it also stands for soft, close
and everything they can be satisfied with.
Top Two: Virgo
Classic saying: What you did is just like my mom!
The boys of Virgo have really valued their family since they
are kids, and they seriously follow the family rules. Most people
are raised by moms. Whatever mothers do and say, it would have
impact on Virgo boys deeply. Generally speaking, Virgo boys
respect their moms as a model. As a result, they will choose the
girl who is similar to their moms to be their girlfriends.
Top Three: Scorpio
Classic saying: How about my mom?
Scorpio boys show their love in different ways. Outwardly,
they look like "don't love their moms”, even be cool or rude and
they try their best to show how much they hate when they live
with their moms. Actually, Scorpio boys are little enjoying this
situation. When they fight against moms, their unconsciousness
enjoy the feeling that moms are focusing on them. In other words,
Scorpio boys may have been bad boys since they are kids and they
bother their moms intentionally to make sure moms do care about
them.

Top Four: Leo
Classic saying: If mom were here...
Most Leo boys are naughty. They look fresh and bright. In
fact, they are in mess. Without their mother's care, they could
even mistake hair gel and pomade. No matter how annoying
mother's advice is, Leo boys regard it as sweet gifts.
Top Five: Pisces
Classic saying: Let's visit my mother this weekend!
Pisces boys always show a soft attitude. It’s easy to make
people think that "this guy must suffer from Oedipus Complex."
Pisces boys are so sensitive that they are hurt and impacted by
outside easily. To them, home is the best refuge and mother is the
person who is ready for forgiving everything and showing
leniency and understanding.
IV. Conclusion
We often hope that we can have a sweet family: parents love us; obliging daughter
and sensible son. As long as we have family who support us, when we meet a big
difficulty, we all can overcome it safely. But we can’t spoil our children overly, because it
may cause a regret forever. Therefore, we should train our children to be independent at
the appropriate age, or they will depend on parents. If boys can’t grow up normally and
become independent, they will indulge in incest and not find their true love.
We can understand more clearly what the Oedipus Complex is by collecting data
from books and internet. Oedipus Complex is not a fatal disease, but a psychological
imbalance. In this open society, we shouldn’t reject or despise the patients who suffer
from Oedipus Complex. But, maybe the society should teach parents how to treat their
sons normally and rightly. Children are not parents’ possession. Parents have their
own lives, and children have their own lives, too. So, parents have to learn to let their
children fly by themselves. What parents should do is wait here! When children face
difficulties, they will know where to find supports.
