Santa Monica backs court
decision to suspend
Trump travel ban
BY MATTHEW HALL
Daily Press Editor
Santa Monica has joined a long
list of cities that oppose President
Trump’s travel ban.
Municipalities
nationwide
including New York, Los Angeles,
Chicago, Minneapolis, and Skokie,
Illinois, are urging a federal judge
to continue blocking President
Donald Trump’s travel ban. Santa
Monica formally joined that list at
the Feb. 14 council meeting.
The Council action puts the city
on the record in two cases, both of
which focus on the same issue.
The State of Washington filed a
lawsuit to block the President’s ban
on travelers from predominantly
Muslim countries and that case
made recent headlines when the
Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals
temporarily halted the ban. A second case, Darweesh v. Trump, was
filed by the ACLU and other
organizations on behalf of two
men who were detained at John F.
Kennedy International Airport
after the ban was first announced.
“The city of Santa Monica has
been asked if it would participate
in the filing of amicus briefs, that
is, briefs in support of the state of
Washington and support of the
plaintiffs in Darweesh and it is recommended that the council allow
the City Attorney’s Office to participate in that,” said Interim City
Attorney Joseph Lawrence.

It’s hard to think of a better
place to live in Santa Monica.
In a shaded neighborhood just
one block between the beach to the
west
and
Santa
Monica’s
Community Garden to the east, the
rent controlled tenants at 122 Strand
Street quietly took buy-outs and
moved out over the last few years.
The new owners of the parcel
are now moving forward with
plans to demolish the four apartments and replace them with three
condominiums that will likely sell
for millions of dollars.
“It is something that should be
a red flag across the city,”
Commissioner Richard McKinnon
said
before

Commission approved plans for

McKinnon is concerned that
the escalating cost of land in Santa
Monica is putting pressure on
rent-controlled buildings that have
endured for decades. In the example on Strand, the new owners,
Texas-based MAV Partners, LLC,
purchased the 1950’s building for
$2.3 million. Even after construction costs, when they are finished
the high-priced beach condominiums will likely produce a tidy profit for MAV in McKinnon’s view.
“This is not a cyclical thing,”
McKinnon said. “This is something
here to stay. Santa Monica only has
a certain amount of land going forward and this may be the canary in
the coal mine.”

McKinnon,

450 hospital workers in vote to join SEIU-UHW
Four-hundred fifty healthcare workers recently voted to join SEIU-United Healthcare
Workers West (SEIU-UHW), a union of 90,000 healthcare workers across California.
“Our goal all along has been to provide the best patient care and now we have a
stronger voice in making sure that happens on a daily basis,” said Angel Gonzalez, a certified nursing assistant at Saint John’s Health Center. “Having a real say in staffing and
patient care will help improve care for the entire community.”
The vote applies to more than 80 job classifications at the hospital, including everything from nursing assistants and licensed vocational nurses to respiratory therapists
and pharmacy technicians.
The facility opened in 1942 and is owned by Providence St. Joseph Health, which is
the third-largest hospital system in the country with 50 facilities, including hospitals in
Burbank, Mission Hills, San Pedro, Tarzana and Torrance. The company reported operating revenue of $18.1 billion in 2016.
More than 825 employees at the Burbank hospital are members of SEIU-UHW.
SEIU-United Healthcare Workers West (SEIU-UHW) is one of the largest unions of hospital workers in the western United States, with 90,000 members. Learn more at

Louise Gabriel’s daughter assumes interim
leadership role at Santa Monica History Museum
The Santa Monica History Museum is saddened by the passing of its Founder, President,
and CEO Louise Gabriel. Gabriel was a member of the Historical Activities Committee of
the Santa Monica Centennial Celebration in 1975 which led to the establishment of the
Santa Monica Historical Society. Gabriel was one of the founders and incorporators of the
Santa Monica Historical Society. As the collections of the Historical Society grew Louise
Gabriel, along with her late husband Bob Gabriel, endeavored to establish the Santa
Monica Historical Society Museum to give the Historical Society a home to share the City’s
history with the public. Established in 1988, the Santa Monica Historical Society Museum
is now known as the Santa Monica History Museum and flourishes in a state-of-the-art
location on the main campus of the Santa Monica Public Library.
Louise Gabriel is the reason the Santa Monica History Museum exists today. It was her
hard work and determination that lead to the donation of the first display cases and furniture needed to open the museum. As the museum grew, it was at her direction. Her
vision and leadership allowed the museum to thrive and to become an important part of
the community. “I will dearly miss Louise Gabriel, her passion for the city of Santa
Monica and ‘Keeping History Alive’, her friendship, and leadership skills. I was honored to
serve as Chair of the Museum’s Board of Directors and as a current Board Member will
continue to support her legacy,” said Edward Guerboian, Santa Monica History Museum
Board Member.
“My mother died peacefully surround by her beloved family,” said Susan Gabriel
Potter, Louise Gabriel’s daughter and Santa Monica History Museum Board Member. “My
mom was an extraordinary woman who lived her life to the fullest with great passion,
humor, and love. She loved the community she lived in and gave back in the most generous ways.
She is an inspiration to so many and has left a tremendous legacy. The founding of the
Santa Monica History Museum was to her one of her greatest accomplishments and what
she was most proud of. The Santa Monica community having their own museum to preserve our own history for generations to come. There will never be another ‘Louise
Gabriel’. I was so blessed to have called her my mother,” continued Gabriel Potter.
Louise Gabriel is survived by her children, Susan Gabriel Potter, Robb Gabriel, and
Sharyl Gabriel Szydlik; grandchildren Patrick Potter, Bryan Potter, and Michael Szydlik;
two sisters Josephine Van Buren and Elaine Bruner; sons-in-law Pat Potter and Joseph
Szydlik; and many nieces and nephews. Her family has requested that in lieu of flowers
donations be made in Louise Gabriel’s honor to the Santa Monica History Museum, 1350
7th Street, Santa Monica, CA 90401.
In accordance with the Santa Monica History Museum’s succession plan, Susan
Gabriel Potter has been elected by the Board of Directors as the Museum’s Interim
President. Gabriel Potter will assume the duties of her late mother and lead the Museum
through this time of transition. “My mother will always be my guiding light,” said Susan
Gabriel Potter “and I am proud to keep her legacy and this museum moving forward to
preserve and promote our community’s history.”
Before her passing Louise Gabriel, as President and CEO, had overseen the development of exciting plans for the Santa Monica History Museum in 2017. These plans include
the continuation of the Museum’s popular free Discover the History lecture series and
monthly free Hands on History children’s workshops. The Museum also has plans for four
special exhibitions in addition to its permanent exhibit about the history of Santa
Monica. These special exhibits will highlight the history of Girl Scouts, Shirley Temple,
the KCRW radio station, and the Tongva Gabrielino Native Americans. “I know nothing
would have made my mother prouder than working to keep our history alive,” added
Gabriel Potter, “and I feel honored and privileged to be carrying on her life’s work by leading the Santa Monica History Museum.”
For more information about these and other Museum events, activities, and exhibits

Intermittent Signal Outage at Montana Avenue & 7th Street
The traffic signal at Montana Avenue at 7th Street is experiencing intermittent outages.
It unpredictably transitions from regular operation to red flashing light, four-way stop operation. The signal has reached the end of its life after constant operation for the last 40
years. A new signal has been ordered and is expected to arrive in April 2017 or sooner.
In the meantime, officials need the community’s help in reducing the risk that comes
from a malfunctioning signal. They are asking that the motoring public, pedestrians, and
bicyclists proceed with heightened awareness and caution through the intersection at
Montana Avenue and 7th Street. Temporary signs are being affixed to the signal post to
alert residents to caution residents.

Pepperdine University presents Don Giovanni
The Pepperdine University Flora L. Thornton Opera Program presents Mozart’s masterpiece, Don Giovanni, sung in the original Italian, with English supertitles, at 7:30 p.m.
on Thursday and Saturday, February 23 and 25, at Smothers Theatre on Pepperdine’s
Malibu campus.
Tickets, priced at $20 for the public, $10 for Pepperdine students, and $16 for
Pepperdine faculty and staff, are available now by calling the Pepperdine Center for the
Arts Box Office at (310) 506-4522 or online at: http://arts.pepperdine.edu/
Henry Price, professor of music at Pepperdine University, directs the student cast,
with Tony Cason conducting the Pepperdine University Orchestra.
Seduction, murder, and retribution propel Don Giovanni. In this reimagined production,
the events of the story begin as Grammy Award nominees are gathering at the Beverly
Hilton hotel in Los Angeles, 1999. Don Giovanni, a young, arrogant, and promiscuous rock
star, outrages the other musicians, their assistants, and hotel staff until he encounters
something he cannot kill, beat up, dodge, or outwit: his own demons.
“Abuse of power is a theme that Mozart and Da Ponte addressed in their first collaboration, The Marriage of Figaro, just two years before the Don Giovanni premiere,” says
Professor Price. “Updating our production to modern times has brought a sense of immediacy to our young cast. I’m sure this will be readily apparent to our audience as well.”
Pepperdine students from the cast of Don Giovanni were awarded first place in the
Opera Division I category of the National Opera Association’s Collegiate Opera Scenes
Competition at the annual national convention held in Santa Barbara on Jan. 5, 2017
where they presented a scene from the show. The cast at the convention included
Fernando Grimaldo, Preston Hereford, Hailey Hoffman, Natalie Leonard, Alexander
Papandrea, Michelle Pina, Angelo Silva, Matthew Soibelman, and Turner Staton.
“I was unbelievably proud of them the whole time,” says Professor Price. “They’re so
exuberant, charming, and humble. They are great students, and I think they were the hit
of the whole conference because everybody liked them so much both in their performance and personally.”
Price was additionally presented with the National Opera Association’s “Lifetime
Achievement Award” at the annual convention on Saturday, January 7.
Pepperdine alumni now populate the rosters of many of the country’s finest opera
houses, including Los Angeles Opera, San Francisco Opera, and the Metropolitan Opera
in New York. Jake Shideler, a 2010 Seaver College graduate, is now Manager of Artistic
Operations at LA Opera and 2002 graduate Brian Speck is head of the Houston Grand
Opera Studio.
A generous gift from the late Flora L. Thornton has enabled the University to enhance
considerably the quality of its opera productions, its summer European opera studies
workshops in Heidelberg, and its arts outreach programs. Recent productions include Die
Fledermaus, Little Women, The Bartered Bride, The Marriage of Figaro, La boheme,
L’elisir d’amore, The Merry Widow, and Cosi fan tutte.

BAN
FROM PAGE 1
New York City’s chief lawyer Zachary Carter
filed papers Friday in federal court in Brooklyn
on behalf of nearly three dozen cities. Carter
and Senior Counsel Susan Greenberg say in the
filing that the ban damages the economies and
cultures of the cities. They say it harms efforts
to keep cities safe, including against terrorists.
The White House has said the order is
necessary to protect against terrorism.
In a press release sent out on behalf of the
Darweesh case, attorneys have argued there
would be significant costs for cities’
economies and the livelihood of immigrant
families if the hold on the President’s
Executive Orders were to be lifted. The release
said immigrants are a significant part of the
local work force with more than 960,000
immigrants employed in Los Angeles.
Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer
said L.A. was to protecting its residents.
“Los Angeles continues to be at the fore-
5
front in the battle to uphold the basic constitutional values that protect all our residents,” said Feuer. “I’m proud our office is
standing up for fundamental rights with this
broad coalition of cities. We offer a unique
and significant perspective in support of the
Court’s injunction.”
Feuer said he would remain vigilant
against a new order and that agencies should
continue blocking the current ban.
“Los Angeles is at the forefront of a
movement to defend American values and
support immigrant communities,” said
Mayor Eric Garcetti in a statement. “I thank
City Attorney Feuer for his leadership, and
stand committed to doing everything in my
power to make sure that all Angelenos’ rights
are respected and upheld.”
The papers were submitted in advance of
a Tuesday hearing.
The Santa Monica Council’s decision to
back both cases was unanimous.

CRIME WATCH
B Y
D A I L Y
P R E S S
S T A F F
Crime Watch is culled from reports provided by the Santa Monica Police Department.
These are arrests only. All parties are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
ON FEBRUARY 9, AT ABOUT 5:13 P.M.
Officers responded to Parking Structure 2 – 1235 2nd Street regarding a fight in
progress. Prior to officer’s arrival, an involved subject walked away. Officers spoke with
the victim who stated he was walking into the bathroom in the parking structure when
the suspect unprovoked began yelling at the victim. The suspect lunged towards the victim and began punching him about the face and body multiple times. The suspect pulled
out the victim’s car keys from the victim’s pocket and began using the keys as a stabbing
weapon to strike the victim multiple times. The suspect stopped his attack and walked
away. The suspect was located by officers in the 200 block of Santa Monica Blvd.
Malcomx Earls, 24, homeless, was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, robbery
and a probation violation. He was denied bail.
PROJECT

Commissioners Jennifer Kennedy and Amy
Anderson urged City staff to look into
potential policy decisions that could curb
the conversion of rent controlled buildings
to condominiums. Over the years, the Ellis
Act has effectively tied the hands of City
leaders.
To the three commissioners, losing those
four apartments will mean lasting demographic change in the neighborhood as
renters lose another foothold in Santa
Monica. City staff conceded it is a phenomenon they have noticed and attributed the
market pressures to the strong economy.
A spokesman for MAV assured the commissioners the tenants in this case had not
been living there for a long time, and were
paying market rate to rent the space.
Still, McKinnon remained frustrated.
“This concerns me enormously and we
don’t seem to have any tools here,”
McKinnon said. “There’s nothing we can do
here.”
“There’s obviously a lot of money to be
made,” Commissioner Leslie Lambert said
of the ongoing trend to demolish rentcontrolled housing to build condominiums. She added the only way to “take the
pressure off the neighborhoods” is to build
high density housing elsewhere in Santa
Monica.
“We’ve argued that until we’re blue in the
face but I think that is the most affirmative
step we could take,” Lambert said.
Lambert then made a motion to approve
the application for the condominium construction. All seven commissioners proceeded to vote “yes” and approve the new project.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY (Feb. 20)
By PETER GALLAGHER
Strange Brew
By JOHN DEERING
Your excitement builds through the next 10 weeks as you realize that you can absolutely be the
person you want to be. The guides begin to show up at the end of March. You’ll need to invest when
May comes around and again in August. Seemingly unrelated areas of life will support one another. Capricorn and Leo adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 9, 7, 22, 48 and 33.
ARIES (March 21-April 19)
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23)
You’ll be reminded that everything in life is a
trade-off. Nothing comes from nothing. Each
result has origins. Assuming that you won’t be
able to have it all, what will you trade for the
result you want?
Living life in the moment can lead to being
joyous. However, you’ll often find this much
easier when the moment is something you
projected, planned and endeavored to make
happen.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20)
SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21)
Healthy habits help you find balance so you
can do your best and be your best. But when
you’re trying to establish those habits,
improvement may feel very far away. A Pisces
will help you have faith.
The thing you forgot about will soon catch up
with you. Therefore, don’t worry about racking
your brain to remember everything you’re supposed to do. When it’s really important, it will
show itself.
GEMINI (May 21-June 21)
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)
Today life is a maintenance project. To invite
future good fortune, get the oil change, buy a
new air filter for the home or give some flowers to your beloved.
Move forward. Go with enthusiasm. If it feels
fake, keep acting it out until you can wear it
more comfortably. Today the excellent attitude
is required. If you don’t bring it, you might as
well stay home.
Agnes
By TONY COCHRAN
CANCER (June 22-July 22)
You will be entranced by someone’s quirks
today. Like Elizabeth Bennet in Jane Austen’s
“Pride and Prejudice,” you’ll find that “intricate characters are the most amusing.”
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)
It’s the recurring theme of the week: Patience
is power. You want it now, but it’s going to happen later -- and only if you commit to doing
something each day toward the goal (and then
keep that commitment).
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)
Friction polishes the gem. Even so, you’ve had
enough friction lately. You’re ready to step
back from it for a moment; you’re ready to
temper these character-building trials with a
little perspective and self-care.
Dogs of C-Kennel
By MICK & MASON MASTROIANNI & JOHNNY HART
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)
In order to be totally effective, you need more
facts and you need more truth. In other words,
don’t let lies and misinformation keep you from
achieving all the success you desire.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)
Today’s happening is something akin to going
to a party and after a long while finally stumbling upon the most interesting person in the
room, the unassuming one standing in the corner for most of the time.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)
It’s too easy to pass the blame, and also it
takes too long. It doesn’t matter that it’s not
your fault. Soon after you take charge and fix
it, miraculous good luck will befall you.
Zack Hill
By JOHN DEERING & JOHN NEWCOMBE
Moon of More
Overwhelmed? The Sagittarius moon suggests that the cure is to add a big responsibility to the mix. Seem
counterintuitive? It actually makes perfect sense. We become overwhelmed when minor responsibilities
vie for our attention. Add something more important and things prioritize themselves, with the low priorities falling away.

■ Fans of the TV quiz show
“Jeopardy!” may already know
Cindy Stowell’s story. The 41-yearold Texas woman played the game
show in August, taping seven
episodes that aired in late
December.
■ Apart from obviously knowing a
lot, what Stowell knew that viewers
did not was that she had been diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer.
She had a six-month prognosis. At
the time of the tapings, she was
fighting a blood infection, but being
on “Jeopardy!” was a dream of
hers.
■ Stowell won $105,803. She
donated it to cancer-related
groups. She died December 5,
