We practice the procedures for Evacuation every month during a fire drill. We practice this drill at different times of the day, and when students are in different locations both inside and outside. Students automatically know what to do, follow the procedures in a quiet and orderly fashion, and they know where to assemble. The procedures to evacuate would be followed in the event of other disasters or serious situations, and it is critical that we can evacuate and assemble in a relatively short time. Our drills take less than ten minutes and generally students are all assembled on the playground quietly waiting within 5 minutes. It takes staff longer to “sweep” and check that all buildings are cleared (no children, doors closed, and lights off). Other disasters in which we would evacuate may be in the event of an explosion, flood, gas leak, hazardous material, landslide, major earthquake, national emergency, bomb threat, terrorism, or severe winter storm. Some of these same disasters may also call for other procedures outlined in our plan. We have procedures for School Closure, Shelter in Place, Lockdown, Drop-CoverHold, or Reverse Evacuation. The principal, or a designated teacher if the principal is not on campus, is the “Emergency Leader.” We are to determine appropriate actions (Evacuation, Shelter In Place....) and guiding staff to ensure student and staff safety. In any serious situation, we will call 911 and emergency crews would arrive within minutes and the emergency organizations will be in charge. However, our emergency plan and the teams made up of staff will work with emergency crews to assess that all students are accounted for, to help maintain a calm and safe environment for students, facilitate first aid, and work to release students to parents when it is determined to be safe. You can also help! Each year we ask parents at the start of the year to provide a large zip lock bag of snacks for your child in the event of an emergency in which students would be sheltering in their classrooms for a longer period of time. You can still send an individual bag of snacks, or provide a large bag for the classroom. We also seek donations of water and non-perishable snacks in the event a larger group of students are together in the MPR. May 11 District Track & Field Meet May 18 Open House A copy of the Emergency Disaster Plan is available in the school office if you would like to review the entire plan. It is a handbook for the site. The district also has a comprehensive plan for the entire district, also available for public review. May 29 Memorial Day—No School June 2 Last day of school Regards, Patty Dineen, Principal Do you love Bingo? Have you had a great time at the Bingo nights in the past? The PTA is in need of a Bingo coordinator for this year in order to have a Bingo Night. If we are unable to find a Volunteer Bingo coordinator we will not be able to have a Bingo Night this year. If you are interested in participating in this fun event please email [email protected]. It's almost that time of year again...time for our Cookie Dough/Cheesecake Fundraiser! Order forms will be sent home on Wednesday, February 8th. Start thinking of family members, friends and neighbors that you'd like to sell yummy treats to! Dear Parents of 6th grade, An initial meeting for planning the 6th grade June 1st Spring Picnic was held last week. Parents from all three schools attended. The principals from all three schools were present and we reviewed what needs to happen between now and June 1st to prepare for this fun district wide celebration for our students. This week in Science we used those holes on either side of our heads....you know, our EARS?! We embarked on a 2-3 week lesson (depending on how much fun we have), on the Physics of Sound. Students worked in pairs to drop mystery objects into a 'sound tube' as their partners tried to guess which object was dropped. Trying our best to use library voices so we could all listen carefully, we tested up to 8 objects and discussed their differing properties, including sound. We also worked on vocabulary relating to sound and even learned what the acronym 'Sonar' stands for! Ask your scientist if they remember! Three committees are formed, and Riebli School parents are in charge of preparing the food for lunch for students. Kim Guy has volunteered to coordinate this committee. Additional parents were at the meeting or sent word that they want to be involved. We are having a second meeting just for Riebli parents on Wednesday, February 8th to discuss both the picnic and promotion. We will explain our role for the picnic, and plan next steps and would love to see as many parents that can make this informational and planning meeting. We need volunteers for both the picnic and a promotion committee. If you are not able to attend, we will be sending out requests for volunteers for needed tasks and to help on the day of the picnic. I hope to see you on February 8th. Ms. Dineen, Principal PTA Spirit Week Is Coming! Monday, January 23: Crazy Hair Day How crazy can you make your hair? Get creative!
