Oh, Say Can You See?
The Regions of the USA
The United States is often divided into four regions. Regions are areas
of the Earth that are alike in their history, climate, traditions or ways
people make a living. While our regions are alike in some ways, they are
also quite different in others. For each region, here are just a few
industries and farm products and one sight you might see when
passing through.

Main idea: This issue is about the four regions of the United States. The
following is a list of activities to be used with this issue. They are listed in order
of difficulty, with the easier pre-reader assignments listed first. Ask the children
to do the following:
1. Design a postcard from each of the four regions. On the back, write a note
to a friend describing what you have seen and done.
2. Discuss the following: In which region do you live? How is it alike and
different from other places you have visited? In which region would you most like
to live? Why? Which regions will you visit this summer?
3. With a friend, have a race to find the following numbers: a percentage, a
population figure, a number between 50 and 80, the region with the largest
population, the region with the largest area, the region with the smallest area.
4. Look though the ads in your newspaper for any of the foods or products
mentioned in this issue. From which regions do these products and foods come?
5. Pretend you and a friend are planning a trip that includes visits to all four
regions. Using a U.S. map, decide what places you would like to see and what
route you could take.
