if everyone works together things

Dear Parents and Caregivers
Last week we had the Senior Prizegiving. It was great to have so many of our students
receiving acknowledgement of their achievements. Not that it was planned, but each
of the speakers, Ella McKendry and Kenji Boekholt, James McKenzie and Mayor Angus
McKay followed a theme which related to ‘success does come to those who make the
effort and acknowledging those who support us’. I thank all those that helped make the Prizegiving a
success, in particular Mrs Kris Canham for her overall organisation. We are lucky to live in an area
where it is possible to be able to follow our dreams. It is easy to take this fact for granted. I think it is
important that students ‘reach for the stars’ and make the effort if for no other reason than 90% of the
rest of the world’s population would do just that if they were given our opportunities.
This Thursday the College is closed for Teacher Only Day. This teacher only time will now be until
1:00pm as the teachers’ union, the PPTA, is holding a meeting in Ashburton in the afternoon. You have
not received the usual notice about this meeting as it will not disrupt a teaching day. Please remember
that the College will be closed on Friday for Canterbury Show Day.

While the College has become a quieter place with the Seniors on examination leave and the Year 10
students on camp, the junior programme continues uninterrupted with the Year 7 and 8 students
working hard on their plays. I look forward to seeing the fruits of their efforts.

If workers and chiefs work together the job will get done- if everyone works
together things get done.
It is with regret that we accept the resignation of Ben Todhunter
from the Mount Hutt College/Lauriston School Board. Ben has
served on the board for the last four years. Deputy Chair from
June 2013 until February 2014. Ben has had a very active and
effective role in the financial and discipline side of the board
and has been a very committed trustee at Board and strategic

proficiency. We wish him all the very best for his future
endeavours.

Year 10 Maths Internal Assessment
The Year 10 Maths classes will be sitting an NCEA Assessment in the last 4-5 days of the term. The
credits gained in this Assessment will be added to each student's NZQA data next year.
The Assessment requires the students to put into practice their previously learnt work on measuring,
Pythagoras and Trigonometry.
This is a great introduction for the students to the style of Maths assessments they will come across next
year. Instead of giving students lots of questions to answer, assessments pose a problem that they may
come across in everyday life. The students have to use their knowledge of Maths to work through all
aspects of the problem to come up with a solution. Setting out, using a variety of Maths calculations,
communication of what they are doing and why, and, of course, getting the answers right are all
important.
Mrs K. Wood (acting HOF Maths)
The Year 9 students will be taking part in the Tends in International Mathematics and Science study.
Mount Hutt College has been selected to take part. All students will set two tests and their results will
be part of New Zealand’s profile in the study. No individual student is identified.
The Year 8 classes for 2015 will remain the same class combinations as this year’s form classes. Digital
devices are optional for all 3 form classes in 2015.
On Friday the 7th of November all the year 7
students and teachers visited Orana Park. We went
to study endangered species of the wild from all
around the world. The year 7’s were split into
their classes. After a snack and a drink we began
the journey around the park. 7BR and 7NE started
at the giraffe enclosure first. When we got to the
giraffes the guide Renee told us why giraffes have
blue tongues, what stops blood rushing down to
their head, why their head would explode if there
wasn’t a special valve stopping the blood and how
to take a selfie with a giraffe. Then we got to feed
them little branches covered in luscious green
leaves. It was an amazing opportunity not to be
missed.
We visited lots of animals such as; The Kiwi, Siamang Gibbons, Lemur, Sumatran Tigers, the Native
endangered birds of New Zealand. The last animal we all visited was the White Rhino. We got to hold
one of the Rhino horns that had fallen off in a fight.
The horn had a rough feeling to it because they are
made of the same thing as your fingernails and your
hair (keratin). We also got a special look at Tortie
the tortoise. He was a little shy with little
movement. After seeing Tortie we went into another
room where we looked at products from animals.
We saw; Snake skin boots, an elephant foot made
into a stool, snake wine with 2 real snakes in it,
zebra skin on a wooden base, bear wine and a wolf
skin mat. These are only a few items that people
have tried to illegally bring into the country after a
holiday overseas.
Over all the trip came to an end really fast which
was quite sad. But that didn’t stop us from having a
great time encountering all the endangered animals
and even the ones that weren’t. We just want to thank Mrs Brennan, Mrs Newport, Mrs McConnell and
the Year 7/8 Dean Miss Richards for making this amazing trip happen. Also to Juanita and Mrs Roderick
for joining us. We also would like to thank all the staff at Orana Park and all the animals for putting up
with us. It was an awesome experience to be allowed to encounter Tortie and hold a Rhinos horn that is
worth millions of dollars on the black market.
By Grace Watson and Isla Spittal (7BR)
