“Hawkeye” is one of the many nicknames of Natty (Nathaniel) Bumppo, the main hero
featured in The Leatherstocking Tales, a series of five novels by American writer James
Fenimore Cooper. The character is generally believed to have been inspired, at least in part,
by the real-life Daniel Boone. He is known as “Deerslayer” in The Deerslayer, “Hawkeye”
and “La Longue Carabine” in The Last of the Mohicans, “Pathfinder” in The Pathfinder,
“Leatherstocking” in The Pioneers, and “the trapper” in The Prairie. The novels recount
significant events in Natty Bumppo’s life from 1740-1806.
The first novel in the series, The Deerslayer, and the fourth novel, The Pioneers, take place
on Otsego Lake, the current site of Cooperstown, New York, where James Fenimore
Cooper’s family established the settlement of Cooperstown at the southern tip of Otsego
Lake in 1794.
