Suggested packing list – 20 kilograms preferably in a suitcase with wheels, plus one piece of hand luggage (115cm) max 7 kilograms Backpack for day trips. Empty water bottle. Mobile phone on international roaming, charger, European power point adaptor Ipod and recharger Camera with long life batteries List of addresses, phone numbers and email addresses of family and friends (on paper in case electronic devices go flat). Pen. Money belt to wear around waist or money pocket to wear around neck. Passport and spare photo. Euros, Travellex cash passport, travellers’ cheques - allow minimum of $20 per day. Photocopy of any credit cards Beach towel, bathers, thongs Bath towel or travel chamois (more compact) Toiletries including soap, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, roll on deodorant, not spray. Remember to put into a small snaplock bag (1 litre max). Small containers only (100 ml max) if in hand luggage. No “short, sharp, shinies”, such as nail scissors or tweezers, as they will be confiscated. Medication and photocopy of prescriptions Light raincoat, or small folding umbrella Sunhat, sunglasses, sunscreen. Roll-on insect repellent. Clothes for various temperatures, as though it is summer, weather could be quite variable. Jeans, track pants, shorts, light tops, pyjamas, shoes for warmer days, sandshoes, lots of underwear and our “trip top”. A set of better clothes for going out with your host family. Plastic bags for dirty/wet clothes. Presents and perhaps a thank-you card for your host family. Pre-wrap or bring wrapping paper, scissors and sticky tape (in suitcase not hand luggage.) Photos of your family, local area, even school to show your hosts Any Australian food you are addicted to, which may not be available there e.g. Vegemite, Earl Grey Tea, Twisties, Weetbix, Milo.
