Contestants will be placed into two groups. (Miss Texas FFI and Miss Texas at Large FFI) At that time, contestants may change groups as long as all requirements have been met. A couple examples are below: Scenario I: A contestant may weight 230 lbs, but wants to compete in Miss Texas FFI. That is possible however her best friend is also competing in Miss Texas FFI. That contestant can decide between competing in the At Large category or the regular category. That contestant is eligible to compete in both, but MUST make the decision during this portion of registration. After all placements are final and applications are accepted, there can be no moving out or into another group. Scenario II: In the instance that there were no competitors for Miss Texas At Large, another contestant from the Miss Texas group could change, at this time, to the At Large group….ONLY IF that contestant meets the 210 weight requirement or the 6 feet tall requirement. After the two groups are set and confirmed, contestants will draw numbers. If a contestant wins an AT-Large Prelim, that contestant MUST compete in the At-Large category. Drawing of Contestant Numbers Contestants will PERSONALLY draw their OWN number. Keep in mind that both size categories will be mixed in together. Contestant #1 could be a regular competitor. Contestant #2 and #3 could be At Large competitors. Remember, you are not competing against others. We are not comparing you to others. You are competing against yourself for points in each subcategory. Contestant position should not be of any importance whatsoever. We will not draw again for final night placements. Contestants will keep their order as during preliminary competition. Miss Texas FFI Contestant Handbookt Pg 6 Revised 01/2009 Frequently Asked Questions for Promoters and Contestants 1. Why was this pageant started? There are many reasons why we are starting this pageant, but first we want to dispel any rumors and beliefs that maybe out there as to why we started this system in Texas. • We are not upset with other promoters (USofA) or how they are choosing to run their pageant. In fact, we are new promoters for the USofA at large system. We will also be having a USA prelim to Miss USofA at Large. • We are not trying to compete or neither capture the drag market in Texas, nor will we ever be interested in do so. • We are NOT competing against any system for contestants. If we had decided to start this pageant for any of the above reasons, it would not be successful, because if something is not done with positive intensions, it will be a huge failure. We whole-heartedly believe in this. Now the reasons why we did start this system: • There is a need in Texas for a system that is not directly linked to a national pageant. Each of the systems currently has a national pageant that the winners must attend. Our goal is to make our pageant as prestigious as Miss Florida FFI. They are the trendsetter's in this area. • In Texas there is a need for a system that is not America or USofA or Continental. We hope to fill that niche. • There are countless entertainers that have won everything that is offered in Texas. We love to see all entertainers compete. We also want to see the up and coming girls with the veterans on stage....one on one. • A pageant that is fair and offers a great prize package is always great to enter and watch. The key is fairness. We guarantee that we will seat judges that are diverse and don't have vested interests in contestants. We will always be open to suggestions and try our best to listen. And the most important reason.... • We love drag and pageantry and the friends that come with the territory. 2. What are the categories to be judged? Creative Presentation, Evening Gown and Talent (in that order) 3. What is meant by creative presentation? During this category the contestant will be required to speak briefly. The costume should be creatively designed and reflect style and obviously creativity. This category can have handheld props and people involved. Music is highly suggested. Creative presentation will not be performed final night, however scores will carry over to final night tabulation. For instance, guys may bring the entertainer out in a prop or carrying her etc. A good example of the cleverness we are looking for is...for example: A contestant coming out in a costume as a cocktail waitress, At the microphone she introduces herself and in her monologue mentions, "It may look like I am serving cocktails, but honey trust me, I am serving nothing but FISH tonight!” A one-minute music clip is also allowed during creative presentation. Something clever and fun, and shows personality and creativity will get you a high score in this category. 4. What order will the categories occur during the pageant? Creative Presentation Evening Gown Talent Usually evening gown is before talent however, in our pageant, we will do evening gown then talent. We want to end the pageant on a high note and also want to encourage entertainers who like to change make-up, hair...etc to do that and not have to worry about redoing makeup for evening gown. (You can also look at the Miss Texas Handbook Page to find more info on Evening Gown.) 5. What are the prizes? We are proud to offer the one of the best state level prize package in the country. Our package can be viewed under prize packages in the handbook or on line at www.misstexasffi.com. 6. What does the crown look like? Again....the best in the business!! You can view it on line at www.misstexasffi.com. Miss Texas FFI Contestant Handbookt Pg 7 Revised 01/2009 7. Can the reigning enter another pageant during their reign? Yes! We will sponsor her to a pageant of her choice. In fact, we encourage them to compete in another pageant! If they do well in other pageants, it just makes us look that much better!!! 8. Who are the judges? We take this topic very seriously. The judges will be a very diverse group of individuals. We will announce our selections no later than 30 days before the pageant. Our judges will be listed on the Judge's Page of our website. (www.misstexasffi.com) (You can also look at the Judging and Tabulation Procedures page to find more info on the judges and judging.) 9. What is the weight/height requirement for the At Large Category? 210 or 6’+ 10. How do I qualify? Are there prelims? Contestants must qualify through an OFFICIAL Texas FFI Promoter/Preliminary 11. How will contestants be judged since there is Miss Texas and Miss Texas At Large happening at the same time? Contestants will be, what we call, BLIND JUDGED. The judges will not know what category the contestant is competing in. The only ones who will know will be the contestants and the promoters/assistants. The reason for this is: this pageant is not judged comparatively. Contestants are not competing against others for placements or scores. Each contestant is competing against themselves and WILL NOT be compared to others during competition for scores. At the time of registration, each contestant will designate the category they are choosing to compete in. This however will not be identified on the judge's sheets. At the end of the competition the scores will be tabulated and at that time the scores will go into two groups and the top three will be decided in each group. Once a contestant has registered for a category (at large or regular) they may not change. All groups will be openly posted in the dressing room before the pageant begins so all the girls will know who is in what category and will be confident that a contestant will not switch groups pending the outcome. For example: A contestant might have designated on the application that she wants to enter the "regular" category, even though she qualifies for the at-large group. At the end of the night, her scores have her placed 2nd in the regular group ($500 prize money) and her scores would have put her 1st in the at-large group($1000). She CAN NOT CHANGE GROUPS. She will be the first runner-up in the "regular" group. As far as drawing for numbers, we will draw for numbers at registration and both groups will draw at the same time. For example: If there are 11 contestants between both groups, the number drawn will be 1-11, not 1-5 for "regular" and 1-6 for "at-large." Each will draw a number and whatever number they draw will be their number, all girls mixed together. Keep in mind, the judging is not comparative, so there will not be a need to have all the big girls together and all the others together. We are very excited about this type of judging!!!! 12. USofA judges comparatively, how does Texas FFI judge? Will there be comparative gown competition? No, there will be no comparative judging in any category. Each contestant competes against herself for points, not placements or rankings. 13. What makes this competition the fairest one? In every competition, whether promoter wants to admit it or not, the outcome can be manipulated by whom is sitting on the judge's panel. We feel we have put many policies into place to make it very hard for our panels to be manipulated. First and foremost, we will always have 9-11 judges on the final night panel. Many contestants sometimes feel that a particular judge may not like them or maybe more partial to others. With 9-11 judges it evens out the playing field, so to speak. When we drop the high and low there are still at least Miss Texas FFI Contestant Handbookt Pg 8 Revised 01/2009 7 judges' scores that count. Also, the panel must be diverse with regard to where they are from, sex, sexual orientation, education and entertainment etc. But the biggest factor is that the judge's will not know which contestant is competing in what category, the at-large or regular. Sure a judge can tell if they are in the regular, but a big girl may elect to compete in the regular category. All of the contestants are mixed together, so contestants will not be presented by groups, just a single group. In the instance that a judge try's to mathematically manipulate his scores, it could backfire since he will not know who is in which group and he could be hurting rather than helping. All of this is outlined during the judge's meeting. It is our hopes though that after spending hours and hours deciding and choosing judges, that we have selected very fair and impartial individuals with integrity who value and respect our program enough to always do what is right. The right thing is to judge each contestant on what is presented the night of the pageant. Not what has been seen previously or what titles contestants might have previously held. As a former competitor and entertainer, I promise to do my very best to ensure a fair and open contest. 14. Why is there no interview category? This answer is very simple. What you see during the pageant is what the judge's see. Many times, the audience can't understand why a contestant won, but they did not see the entire pageant, because they can not see interview. Everything scored will be what is done on stage. This does not mean that some will not agree with the outcome. There will always be people who do not agree, and we will just have to deal with that. We are looking for Texas’ best female impersonator, not the best interviewee. 15. When do we get our comment sheets back? Each and every contestant’s comments sheets will be scanned and posted online within 72 hours of the pageant. The file will be a pdf file that can easily be downloaded. Each contestant will be able to view everyone’s comment sheets and scores. The master score sheet will be copied for each one at the end of the pageant, including preliminary scores. 16. Will everything be posted on line? Yes! We will post all comment sheets, judge's sheets, scores and the master tabulation spreadsheet as soon as possible. 17. Why would I want to promote this system? This pageant system gives your entertainers another option and a fresh look at competition. We are not interested in previously won titles or “names” in the business. As pageant promoters we are focused on providing a fair contest. Our main focus is not making MONEY, but reviving interest in female illusion and rewarding it justly. We have built a reputation of hard work and putting our resources back in to continually build our pageant better and bigger. We understand how expensive pageants can be and we want to be as flexible with our promoters as possible. If given a chance I think you will find our system to be a great option or addition to your promotional endeavors. 18. Is there conflict or interest with other systems and promoters? Absolutely Not! One of my dearest and closest friends is Craig Henderson, promoter for Miss USofA at Large, Miss Texas USofA and Miss Texas USofA at Large. As a former Miss Texas USofA at Large and former Miss USofA are Large I have a positive relationship with Craig and will always value our friendship. He is well aware of my hopes and admirations for our system. In fact, we look forward to seeing many of our contestants in other pageants. One reason why we have our pageant in March is so that our winners have time and can possibly win a prelim to compete in Miss USofA, Miss Texas USofA, Miss Texas USofA at Large, Miss Texas America or even Miss USofA at Large. We also have a positive standing relationship with the promoter for Miss Texas America. 19. What does FFI stand for? For Female Impersonators (FFI) 20. Does a promoter have to do an at large pageant the same night as the regular pageant? Yes, we do prefer that there be a double crowning in one night. Even if there are no "at-large" contestants, the promoter can appoint a representative and crown them the night of the pageant. 21. What crown has to be used for a preliminary? Promoters may choose whatever crown they feel can fit into their pageant budget. We use/suggest www.rhinestonejewelry.com . 22. Where will the state level pageant be held? Houston, Texas 2009 Miss Texas FFI Contestant Handbookt Pg 9 Revised 01/2009 23. Will the state competition be a multiple day event? At this point, we are planning a 2-3 day pageant. We will always try to keep promoter and contestant costs down as much as possible. We anticipate 32-45 contestants at the state level competition, thus making it necessary for a 2 or 3 day pageant. 24. If I enter and win Miss Texas FFI, can I compete at Miss Texas America or Miss Texas USofA? As long as you qualify for one of those pageants (winning one of their prelims to qualify) you could enter one of those state contests during your reign as Miss Texas FFI. As your promoters of Miss Texas FFI, we would sponsor your winnings from the FFI prize package and possibly more. Miss Texas FFI 2006 Alyssa Edwards went on to win Miss USofA the year during her reign and Miss Texas at Large 2007 Kelexis Davenport won Miss Texas USofA during her reign. We proudly sponsored both of them and were a proud part of their success! 25. Can contestants change creative presentations, evening gowns, and talents from prelims to finals at the state competition? Of course! BUT we want everyone to understand that for final night only the top 6 regular and top 6 at large move on into finals. It is very important to do their very best during the preliminary competition part of the contest. AND REMEMBER, THE JUDGE’S PANEL WILL BE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FROM PRELIMS TO FINALS. 26. Will the same judge’s judge preliminary nights and final nights? NO! There will be a new set of judge’s for final night. We will seat a “fresh” panel just as the “real girl” pageants do. 27. How many contestants move on to the finals? TOP 6 Regular Contestants + TOP 6 At-Large Contestants + The Next 2 Highest Scoring Contestants 28. How many promoters/preliminaries are there? Approximately 20. After January 1, 2008 each contestant must qualify with an official Texas FFI preliminary in order to compete at the state pageant. 29. Will the state pageant always be in Dallas? No….we hope to be able to move it around. 30. This is the most important point to understand. The judges for preliminary night at Miss Texas FFI and the judges for FINAL night will be completely DIFFERENT. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT ALL CONTESTANTS KNOW TO PRESENT THEIR VERY BEST DURING PRELIMINARY NIGHT COMPETITION. SINCE THERE WILL BE A DIFFERENT PANEL FOR FINAL NIGHT THERE IS NO NEED TO PREPARE TWO GOWNS AND TWO TALENTS. ONLY 6 GIRLS (6 AT LARGE AND 6 REGULAR) MOVE INTO FINALS, SO WE SUGGEST EACH CONTESTANT DO THEIR SAME PACKAGE FOR PRELIMS AND FINALS. 31. Does Texas FFI BAN contestants for not showing up at the State Level? Yes. If a contestant who has qualified as the WINNER of their prelim does not show up they are banned for one year in the Texas FFI system and one year in the USofA system. 32. Can a contestant who was a 1st Runner Up compete at another prelim? Yes. Starting September 1, 2008, promoters will only be responsible for sending the WINNER of their preliminary, unless they want to send the 1st alternates. If a contestant that wins 1st alternate, wants to qualify, they need to WIN a prelim. If a contestant is going as the 1st Runner Up, that is allowed, however the promoter is not obligated to pay for any costs unless they have agreed to do so and has obtained permission from the Texas FFI home office.
