They are earning their wristbands, preparing for the recital on May 9th, and the GAIN performance at Rikenjaks on May 6th. Tony James, Voice Instructor, and Mrs. Kelley, Director, also had a great opportunity to see Hannah M. perform as the Candy Man in “Willy Wonka Jr.” at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral School Theatre. Her performance was entertaining and exciting. Camille’s brother, Connor B., played the lead roll of Willy Wonka, in which he did an outstanding job. We love to see our students take their training and apply it to another venue. This builds confidence, creates energy for practicing and confirms the desire to share what they love doing. In order to hold your time slot during the summer session, you have a wonderful opportunity to schedule Group Makeup Lessons to cover the dates you will be out. It is a chance to help someone grow as a musician. My memories of my music teachers remind me of their love for music and the hard work they put into making me a better musician. I use that as a guide to help others develop a love for music. How do you inspire students to practice more? I try to provide techniques that will encourage them to practice to be successful. Sometimes their schedule doesn’t allow for thirty minutes daily, but they could use a few minutes to sit down and look at a section of music that is difficult for them. If they look at it, even without the instrument in hand, they can see things they will improve on. What part do you feel that the recital experience plays in a student’s development? In preparing for the recital, it gives the student a goal to strive for, as well as provide them with an opportunity to perform in front of a group of people who love music. The chance to play their instrument in front of a group is a way of developing confidence not just in music, but in many areas of life. What is your favorite type of music and who are your favorite musical artists? I love most styles of music. My favorite group is Chicago. My favorite radio station for driving is KLUV. When working around the house I listen to Apocalyptica on Pandora. My personal favorite band composer is Percy Grainger, and orchestral composer is Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. Tell us about what you are working on now. I am currently preparing my school students for Choral Assessment and end of the year programming, plus preparing for auditions for next year’s chorus. Do you have any hobbies? I like working in my yard, attempting to play golf, and want to get more time to go fishing and to travel. What instrument do you play and how long have you taken lessons? I’ve been playing electric guitar for 3 years. Who are your favorite musical artists? I like artists Kevin Gates, August Alsina, Tool, and Al Green. What are your other hobbies besides music, and what is something interesting that you’ve recently learned outside of music? I enjoy fishing, drawing, and dancing. I recently learned how to drive, and I am looking forward to getting my driver’s license. What are your favorite foods? My favorite foods are boiled crawfish, rib-eye steak, and cheese cake. What is the coolest thing you’ve learned in lessons recently? I recently learned how to change my own guitar strings. Do you perform at family gatherings? I have not performed at any family gatherings, but my dad plays the accordion and he and I play together occasionally. Do you have performances individually or as a group coming up? I do not have any performances planned in the near future. If you could give a quick tip for students taking lessons, what would it be? Practice regularly and do not give up when you hit a sticking point. If you could give a quick tip for playing brass instruments, what would it be? If you can’t practice on your horn, buzz your mouthpiece daily. There are many things a brass player can do using just the mouthpiece. 308 E. PRIEN LA RD.
