Thank you. Ellen Hershkin National President DID YOU GIVE US YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS AND STILL NOT GETTING OUR BULLETINS? You can always go to our website www.hadassah.org/alisa under Newsletters to get the bulletin. But that will not fix the problem. Most likely next month you will not get the bulletin again. Why?.... Your email provider may have SPAMMED us. How can you tell? Look in your junk or spam mailbox. If you find our mail there, you have been SPAMMED. We are very sad about this, but really have no control. Sometimes, your provider will spam us because of images, so we are going to remove the Alisa Hadassah Logo from our email. Each email provider (gmail, outlook, yahoo, etc) has a different way of telling the system NOT to spam an email. However, in most cases the easiest way is add a contact for Alisa Hadassah with the email address [email protected]. Not having any luck fixing the problem, email us at [email protected]. Tell us your email address & provider, phone number & whether you used to receive our emails. We will try to help you. Thank you for helping Alisa Hadassah save money and give more to charity. We appreciate your cooperation and will help you get these problems fixed!!! Submitted by Eileen Carpenter 2 Shalom my friends; Every fall regions across the nation celebrate a Myrtle Wreath Ceremony to honor members who have provided outstanding service to their chapters. This started me thinking, what does the Myrtle Wreath really mean and what does it have to do with Hadassah? It must symbolize something important because it is on our life membership pins and used to be on our national logo. After some research this is what I found out: The Myrtle (hadas) is a very common indigenous shrub growing well in the stony soil of Israel. It is a very hardy plant with strong roots, dark green scented leaves, delicate starry white flowers and dark colored edible berries. Myrtle twigs together with a palm branch and twigs of willow are still used in the ritual of Succot. Very simply put it is my impression that the Myrtle symbolically represents the Jewish people. The wreath embodies the noble circle concepts of protection, unity and balance. Casting a circle in spiritual practices suggests protecting that which is enclosed. Now the interesting fact is that the name Hadassah is a feminized form of the word (hadas), meaning myrtle. Hadassah means compassion and the Hebrew name Esther. Now that I have enlightened you I hope you will join me at this year’s Myrtle Wreath Ceremony on Sunday October 30th at the Forsgate Country Club when we honor two of our own: Ella Goldstein and Judy Gerstein. The flyer and details are in the bulletin. Please send your reservations to me so that I can arrange for all of us to sit together. If I don't see you before Rosh HaShana let me extend my heart filled good wishes to you and your families and in the spirit of Yom Kippur if I have offended anyone please accept my apologies. Zionism —- Historically Speaking The land of Canaan (now Israel) was promised to our forefather Abraham. Joshua brought the Jews into the land around 1200 B.C.E.; the Kings of Israel (Saul, David, Solomon, etc.) ruled for about 1,000 years, until the Roman conquest and the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 C.E. Throughout 2,000 years of exile, however, there were always Jews in the Land of Israel, albeit poor and few in number. During the 19th century some European Jews, and, in particular, a journalist named Theodor Herzl, called for a return to Israel. They called themselves “Zionists”, after the term “Zion”, the tall hill in the center of the city of Jerusalem. Herzl said, “If you will it, it is no dream.” Wealthy European Jews, such as the Rothschild family, began purchasing tracts of land for agricultural settlements. Jews resettled the land and founded the first “kibbutz” (communal farming settlement) in 1909, the same year that Tel Aviv was founded. As more and more Jews from different countries came to settle on the newlypurchased land, a need arose for a common language. A man named Eliezer Ben Yehudah took it upon himself to revive the Hebrew language, which had thus far been used for prayer and study, but never for daily speech. Of course, this entailed creating new words, as well as assigning new meanings to ancient words. To this day, Hebrew is the only “dead” language ever to be successfully revived!
