Fourth Quarter
March 2011
Kindergarten Parents,
During the fourth nine weeks, your child will be working on the following Academic
Knowledge and Skills (AKS) in the kindergarten curriculum.
Please consult the AKS handbook received on registration day for further explanation of
each objective.
Language Arts
During the fourth quarter, kindergarten students will continue reading and writing daily.
Kindergarten students will use their verbal skills to describe people, places, things, and

will also understand how print can persuade. Students will begin reading with expression,
and apply phonics rules to reading. Students will also be expected to read thirty sight
words per minute. Persuasive writing will be introduced during the fourth quarter.
Students will state and support their opinion in their writing. The writing process of

help us in school as well. Some ideas include rote counting to 100, practicing addition and
subtraction problems, reading nightly to your child, practicing tying shoes, working on
sight word recognition and encouraging your child to write independently at home.
