Keeping Well: Healthy Food
This set of worksheets is based on the book I Like Apples from the Start Reading series Keeping Well. Aimed at EYFS
and KS1, they aim to make children more familiar with different kinds of food and drink. The worksheets are designed
to be photocopied and handed out in class. The children then need to attribute the labels correctly to the different
foods and drinks. The additional activities below link to the National Curriculum.
EN1: Speaking and Listening
Group discussion and interaction
• As part of a National Childhood Obesity week or a PSHME session the children could discuss issues surrounding
keeping healthy. What foods to they enjoy? Do they know about healthy eating?
Activity:
• Ask your pupils to make a poster showing lots of different foods. They can look on the Internet to find pictures or
draw them themselves. Can they label all the foods and decide which are healthy are which are not?
EN2: Reading
Literature
• As part of a Guided Reading session, the children should be encouraged to read the text aloud.
EN3: Writing
Knowledge, Skills and Understanding Composition
• Ask the children to look at the worksheets and talk about why labels are important.
Planning and Drafting
• Give the children an opportunity to write about their own favourite meal. Have they chosen healthy foods? IF not,
can they think of healthy alternatives?
• The children should plan and draft their own writing, edit it to make any changes as well as peer and self-assess
their own work.
Additional activities:
• Write a poem that raises awareness of the issues around healthy eating.
• Explore the importance of healthy eating and how to keep well. In what other ways can children stay healthy?
Do they have a favourite sport they enjoy taking part in?
• Find a simple recipe of a healthy sandwich on the Internet and try and make it for your lunch the next day.
