MARC B. LORBER
One of the most experienced international content production, acquisitions, formats and programming
executives, and an award-winning producer; skilled in conception, acquisition, development, strategic
partnerships, and physical production of originals and formats, in the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Australia; as well
as Russia, Eastern Europe, Egypt, the UAE and Africa, encompassing the CIS, CEE and MENA regions, amongst
the 17 non-English speaking countries Marc has lived and/or worked in.
Lionsgate Television has retained Marc for 3+ years and tasks him now with overseeing their UK acquisitions
(such as C4’s series DAMNED premiering in September), sourcing investment opportunities (such as Kindle
Entertainment), development activities and partnering with established UK prodco’s such as Drama Republic,
Merman Films, New Pictures and Fifty Fathoms amongst others; and licensing formats like WEEDS to LatAm,
BOSS to the UK (currently in network development), NURSE JACKIE to Sweden, and MY BFF to the Mideast
(1st season produced); while also acquiring multiple formats the studio has set up at US networks like FEED
THE BEAST, originally from Denmark, now a 10 episode series which premiered on AMC June 5.
Marc recently consulted for Liberty Media’s Belgian triple-player, Telenet, on their first pay premium drama
series, CHAUSSEE D’AMOUR, (premiered May 10) and the largest download ever in that country; for the UAE’s
Image Nation as showrunner on the first ever original Emirati/Arabic language legal drama series, QALB AL
ADALA, (18 episodes currently in postproduction/IM Global distributes), which festival premiered recently at
Series Mania Paris; and for Fox on format production of PRISON BREAK in Egypt.
Marc has also consulted for: Image Nation and The Crown Prince’s Court of Abu Dhabi for whom he created
and Executive Produced, BEYOND BORDERS, the first Emirati docu-narrative series, shot in the UAE and the
Philippines (premiered on MBC1); Red Bull TV with the development of international factual series ahead of
their channel launch; EbonyLife TV in Nigeria, a pan sub-Saharan African channel launched into 48 countries
on DSTV, with their startup and original series development; Sony on SILENT LIBRARY in Turkey/TV2, the
reboot of Romania’s WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE/Kanal D, which won the network its first-ever TV
Mania Award, and THE SUBSITUTE in Netherlands/TV2; and Antenna Group on an original series writing
initiative in Athens. Marc was attached as a creative consultant to Fox TV Studios on the Swedish format, LIFE
COACHES.
Marc served as Senior Vice President, Original Programming and Production and Executive Producer for HBO
Europe, based in Budapest but with extensive time in Poland, Romania and the Czech Republic to launch
HBO’s plan to properly produce local language series. Marc built a regional team, and established the internal
infrastructures, to then manage the inaugural series in each of the four countries, consisting of the 45-episode
first seasons of IN TREATMENT (which won HBO its first-ever Romanian TV Mania Award for best drama
series), and also WHEN SHALL WE KISS, whose first production outside of its native Israel premiered to great
success in Hungary, and now in Romania.
While at HBO, he ramped up feature-length regional documentary productions to some 20+ per year,
including the division’s first-ever nomination and win at the 2010 International Emmy’s for Romania’s, THE
WORLD ACCORDING TO ION B. He also licensed and developed other scripted formats such as Israel’s hit
series, THE NAKED TRUTH, for development across the region. He revamped long-running comedy series in
three countries, and created a new format, STAND UP COMEDY CLUB, in Poland.
While serving as Senior Vice President Production at Marvista Entertainment; Marc oversaw a team responsible
for multiple telefilm, miniseries and series projects which he Executive Produced for networks as diverse as
Lifetime, Hallmark, ION, MTV Networks, and SyFy. Marc also made the company’s first format sale, PRANK
PATROL, to ABC Australia (multiple seasons) to kickstart their A3 channel; established international coproductions, Canadian-Content and SAG low budget models, and attended all the major TV markets.
He was based in London while working for Disney International TV overseeing format development and
international productions, involving him in localized projects ranging from THE AMAZING RACE to EXTREME
MAKEOVER, GOLDEN GIRLS to DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, to name a few, in India, UAE, Spain, Italy, Asia,
Brazil, Greece, France, and Bulgaria amongst other countries.
For Sony, Marc spent over a year in Russia on the productions of KING & COUNTRY (110 episodes) and NE
RODIS KRESEVYE/UGLY BETTY (200 episodes & Russia’s highest-rated serial), for 1st Channel and CTC
respectively, working with Russia’s then largest TV production company, Amedia; and also oversaw further
series pre-production with Sony’s newly acquired production company, Lean-M.
Marc has consulted for Viasat/TV Prima on the Czech production of UGLY BETTY, as well as for Fox TV Studios
and Tandem on the development and sale of an Australian format, MDA, to Sat.1 in Germany. Marc sold
Working Title TV’s first US co-production, A TALE OF TWO WIVES, to Oxygen Network as their first-ever
telefilm, and also produced the project in Vancouver and London. Marc’s last solo film production, HELLO
SISTER, GOODBYE LIFE, for ABC Family Channel in 2006, ranks as one of their highest-rated original films.
He was the first Vice President, Development and Production, for Carlton/ITV in America, responsible for
launching a department to develop and produce international MOW’s and series. Marc conceived, developed,
and physically produced on international locations, a franchise of telefilms with partners such as Tele München
Group in Germany and Nine Network in Australia. He also supervised an award-winning family film, and
multiple Canadian co-productions with Shaftesbury Entertainment, as just a few of the division’s many
international projects. And he developed remakes from Carlton’s catalog resulting in projects at ABC and FOX.
Prior to Carlton America, Marc created a television production division for Phoenix Pictures. As its Vice
President, he developed, sold, and was Executive in Charge of Production on the acclaimed Showtime comedy
series, THE CHRIS ISAAK SHOW (3 seasons/47 episodes). Twice called “the best comedy on TV” by the Los
Angeles Times. Credits there also include Co-Producer of the CBS Sweeps miniseries SHAKE, RATTLE & ROLL,
and Executive Producer of the Showtime films, OFF SEASON, a multi-Emmy winner (including Marc’s Producing
nomination), and multi-Emmy nominee, THE WISHING TREE.
As an independent producer, Marc both acquired and developed the factual material for, and was a Producer
on; ABC’s highest-rated original film for the 1997 season, BRAVING ALASKA; and NBC’s CRADLE OF
CONSPIRACY (its premiere ranked in the week’s top 5 programs).
Marc began his television career at Spelling Entertainment where he found and developed the source material
for a one-hour pilot for Fox; and worked on the production of two acclaimed ABC telefilms.
While completing his Master’s degree in New York, Marc also worked as the Director of Sales and Marketing
for Cinevista; an arthouse and Spanish language film distributor, allowing him to work with distinguished
directors such as Pedro Almodovar, Derek Jarman, and Nestor Almendros.
A current voting member of BAFTA and the U.S. Academy of TV Arts & Sciences; the latter elected Marc
Governor from their largest branch, TV Executives, for 2007-09; and he was further elected by the Board of
Governor’s to its Executive Committee, and was also long-serving on its Foundation’s Education Committee,
involving him in their College TV Awards, Faculty seminars, and internship programs. Marc taught multiple
semesters as an adjunct professor at California State University’s TV-Film Program, and has spoken on
industry topics at NATPE, Korea’s BCWW and Seoul International TV Drama Awards 2014-16-16, The Losby
Norwegian Drama Conference, Rio Content Market, Formats Asia, The European TV Drama Series Lab in
Berlin, Business of Scripted Copenhagen, Indielab London, Serial Eyes, UCLA, USC/Stark Graduate Producing
Program, and numerous film and TV festivals.
Marc earned his Master’s from Columbia University's Graduate Film Program as a Producer; after graduating
from Wabash College on a full Scholarship, and interning for David Letterman in New York.
