Materials:
Literacy and Level 1
Picture Story: They Never Walk (This story can also
be used with Picture Story #2 as a story exchange)
1 hour
Downloadable picture story and the appropriate
accompanying text (Level 1 or Literacy)
Downloadable Worksheet #1 (to make an overhead
and for learners to copy) and Worksheet #2.
Learning Outcomes:
Learners will be able to:
Listen for key vocabulary and content
Understand the effects of a sedentary lifestyle
Suggested Approach:
Higher level classes can listen to the instructor tell the story
while they arrange the pictures in order in groups.
Instructors of lower level classes may wish to make an overhead
copy of the picture story first, using the pictures from Worksheet
#1 before orally telling the story and having the groups order
the pictures.
Learners can then match the sentences to the pictures, either as
the instructor tells the story again, or by looking at the pictures
and matching the corresponding text. (There are two text
versions of the story that can be used with the same pictures.
One is simplified for literacy learners and the other for Level 1.)
For Level 1 classes, pre-teach or review the adverbs of frequency
“always” and “never” as they are used in the Level 1 version.
This story also focuses on possessive pronouns. For the Literacy
version of the story, the focus is on simple present sentences in
the affirmative and negative.
Finally learners can use Worksheet #1 to copy the story. Faster
learners can complete Worksheet #2 as an extension activity.
