That represents an 80% increase from last year’s show. The event is the largest business-tobusiness conference and trade show in the marijuana sector and has grown to surpass or rival the size of some The dedicated hashtag for the show is #MJBIZCON – feel free to share your experiences on social media! Not only are there eight new state cannabis markets for entrepreneurs to consider from coast to coast, but there’s also the potential fallout from Presidentelect Donald Trump to consider. While many in the marijuana trade consider the industry basically safe from federal interference, the possibility remains that a Trump-run Department of Justice could decide to change tack and reverse the long-standing policies outlined in the Cole Memos. But even in the face of such uncertainty, those who know the industry best are bullish. The general consensus is that too many voters have Marijuana Business Conference & Expo® spoken across the country for any presidential administration to reverse the gains that have been made by both the marijuana movement and the businesses that have sprung from it. The biggest opportunity for many hopeful businesses could be California, though a lot of industry insiders still believe the market to be saturated from generations of black-market growers and unlicensed companies. But there are others to be evaluated as well, including new medical marijuana markets to be established in Florida, Arkansas and North Dakota, as well as recreational cannabis markets in Nevada, Massachusetts and Maine. Montana could also provide openings for entrepreneurs, especially on the ancillary side, after voters approved commercial cultivation operations and dispensaries. With all that will also likely come a tidal wave of investments, ranging from high-end venture capital firms to individual investors looking to cash in on the Green Rush. But at the same time, that attraction will likely force companies already in the industry to up their game and become more competitive, to set themselves apart from newcomers as well as old colleagues. The bottom line is the face of the cannabis industry is set to change dramatically. Expansion is likely a foregone conclusion. The only question is what form it will take. ◆ May 17-19, 2017 • Washington, DC Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center MJBizCon.com Q&A: Staying Creative in Cannabis By Bart Schaneman As the marijuana industry grows and evolves, it’s easy for business owners and executives to get caught up in a 24/7 work cycle that leaves them burned out and exhausted. Managing heavy workloads and nonstop tasks while maintaining high performance, creativity and productivity can be a challenge. Enter Juliet Funt, CEO of WhiteSpace at Work, a training and consultancy firm that strives to help companies simplify and declutter so their workers have time to think and breathe. Funt spoke with Marijuana Business Daily about which steps the cannabis industry can take to maintain its vitality as it expands at a rapid rate: ideas grace us with their presence whenever they damn well feel like it. In our panic to run our business practices we try to schedule innovation, and that’s not really how the mind works. The alpha brain waves … that are a natural precursor to creative thought come when we have relaxing time. That’s why we have ideas in the shower. As counterintuitive as it is, there must be oxygen in the system of a day in order for innovation to grace us with its presence. That can mean stepping outside. That can mean having time between meetings. That can mean taking appropriate vacation time even though you’re an entrepreneur. What would you tell business owners How can you tie that in specifically to trying to balance the speed of this the marijuana industry? rapidly changing industry with the There’s a phenomenal amount of need to create and innovate? self-talk that needs to go on in any Innovation is a mental process that can’t be forced or demanded. Creative time of giant opportunity. As exciting as giant opportunity is, there’s a crushing pressure that accompanies that giant opportunity. It’s the fear of others passing you on the road. It’s the fear of the giant pie of potential money being divided up without you. It’s the fear of not being able to make your mark. Waking up every morning and looking at a right-sized pie of how much you can do in a day, deciding what’s realistic, then proceeding to do that realistic plan with as much grace as possible is a constant necessary selftalk that entrepreneurs in an exploding space need. Juliet Funt What advice would you give an reports. executive who is managing people in So if you are an executive in a this sector for the first time? company that’s growing, I think you have Every company I’ve ever worked with, the larger they are, the more ridiculous, unnecessary tasks their teams touch. If you go all the way up to a Fortune 100 company, they are absolutely buried in unnecessary lowvalue junk, in emails and meetings and to be constantly wary of recreational complexity - the desire to make things a little more ornate or complicated than they actually need to be. ◆ This interview has been edited for length and clarity. MJBizCon Powerhouse, continued …continued from page 1 more traditional, mainstream events such as the World Tea Expo and the International Pizza Expo. Its growth has been bolstered by the public’s growing acceptance of marijuana, a surge in business opportunities and an increasing desire to network, learn and strike deals all in one place. “Trade events are the quintessential epicenter of every industry. Gathering this many decision-makers, investors, entrepreneurs, innovators and leaders in a single location fuels growth,” said George Jage, president and publisher of Marijuana Business Daily, which hosts the conference. “I firmly believe that more sales will be made, deals will get done and partnerships will be forged over these three days than every other event held this year.” The event was recently named by Trade Show Executive Magazine as America’s fastest-growing conference by percentage increase in three categories - attendance, number of exhibiting companies and square feet of exhibit space. It beat out scores of other events in those categories, including those focused on everything from construction and plastics to fashion and specialty coffee. As states across the nation continue to legalize marijuana – both medicinal and recreational – conference attendance is expected to continue this brisk growth well into the future. Entrepreneurs, executives and investors from all 50 states and 32 countries are attending this year’s conference. Some other interesting stats about who is here: • With 2,813 attendees, California leads all states in conference attendance. • 7,946 attendees (79%) are coming from states with either medically or recreationally legal marijuana. • 585 international attendees are with us in Vegas, 78% of whom are from Canada. Other attendees hail from South Korea, Israel and Russia. • There are 323 exhibitors – 31% of whom haven’t previously exhibited at the event - on 45,000 net square feet of exhibitor floor space. Exhibiting companies span all sectors of the industry, from banking, security, packaging and marketing firms to consultants, cultivation equipment manufacturers and infused products companies. With more than 30 sessions, roundtables and workshops - each focused on a particular part of the cannabis market - conference attendees will have the opportunity to hear from nearly 90 industry experts and leaders who will present Going to and participate in all-new programs highlighting the most critical topics and issues facing marijuana business owners today. This year’s event also features a separately ticketed Science Symposium and in-depth workshops on everything from landing a bank account to #MJBizCon celebrate • support • socialize extraction techniques. Aside from the sessions and expo floor, professionals will have ample opportunities at breakfasts, lunches and roundtable discussions to make new contacts, seek out experts, identify partners and even land investment deals. ◆ tonight? Without their efforts, the business opportunities would not exist – and it’s time to give back to the cause. SEE YOU THERE! The #MJBizCon Mixer – the Official Afterparty of MJBizCon Today’s Highlights State of the Industry & Exclusive Forecast The cannabis industry made huge gains in 2016, setting the stage for future growth in medical and recreational markets across the country. But it also experienced a few setbacks, and little progress was made in the areas of banking and taxes. At 9 a.m. in the Amazon Ballroom, Marijuana Business Daily Editorial Director Chris Walsh will highlight notable developments and trends that have shaped the cannabis industry this year and discuss what they mean for the future of your business. He’ll also present some key industry data – such as profitability rates for each major sector and average revenue per square foot for dispensaries/recreational marijuana stores – as well as exclusive postelection retail sales forecasts. Election Analysis With the industry fresh off some historic wins on Election Day, a panel of experts will gather at 10:30 a.m. in the Amazon Ballroom to discuss the results of the nine marijuana-related measures that appeared on state ballots last week. In the session, titled “Win, Lose or Draw: 2016 Election Postgame,” Ethan Nadelmann of the Drug Policy Alliance, Rob Kampia of the Marijuana Policy Project, Nevada Sen. Tick Segerblom and Dale Sky Jones of Oaksterdam will discuss the implications of the election. The panelists will look at which new markets offer the biggest business and investment opportunities, what’s next in states where legalization measures failed, how the election will impact federal marijuana policy and which states could legalize next. Patient & Consumer Insights To get an idea of what customers think about your cannabis business, it helps to go right to the source: patients and consumers themselves. Opinion analysts Derek Richards and John Bizarre did just that, interviewing patients and rec customers in Las Vegas, Denver and Los Angeles to learn firsthand about their experiences buying cannabis, infused products and concentrates from dispensaries and rec shops. They’ll present their findings at 11:30 a.m. in the Amazon Ballroom in an educational – and entertaining – session titled “Caught on Tape! Exclusive Cannabis Customer Insights.” Learn what customers and patients really think about retailers, infused products, services and other offerings in the cannabis marketplace. Penn Unplugged Penn Jillette isn’t known for subtlety. The well-known libertarian, political commentator, free-market capitalist and entertainer frequently speaks his mind on issues of the day, ranging from religion to gay rights to drugs. Jillette also has been an outspoken supporter of marijuana legalization for years – even though he’s never consumed marijuana himself. Jillette’s pro-cannabis stand stems from the artistry he has seen from creative types who have gotten inspiration from marijuana. At one point, Jillette railed against President Barack Obama, calling him a hypocrite when it comes to cannabis laws. Check out Jillette’s keynote at 12:10 p.m. in the Amazon Ballroom to hear his views on marijuana legalization, the cannabis industry and some of the biggest challenges facing MJ businesses down the road. Everyone’s day was filled with sessions, meet-ups and the like, so here are some MJ industry developments that conference attendees might have missed Tuesday: Maine Gov to Query Trump on Marijuana Stance Maine’s governor Paul LePage plans to ask President-elect Donald Trump if the Trump administration will enforce federal law on marijuana before LePage decides if he will challenge the state’s vote last week to legalize cannabis. The answer to LePage’s question for Trump is of large interest to the cannabis industry as a whole, as Trump has not announced his cabinet appointments nor his official stance on marijuana. In addition to LePage’s possible dispute of the referendum, the vote is being challenged by opposition group Mainers Protecting Our Youth and Communities, according to the Portland Press Herald. Denver’s Public-Use Cannabis Initiative Approved Denver voters have passed an initiative to allow cannabis consumption in public businesses such as bars and restaurants, overcoming initial predictions the measure faced an uphill battle. As of 2 a.m. ET on Tuesday, Initiative 300 had received 53.31% of the approximately 302,000 votes that had been counted. Denver Relief Consulting, the lead proponent of the initiative, declared victory, adding that it was a win for Denver adults who can “now gather socially and use products of their choice.” The yes vote makes the Mile High City the first of its kind to approve public-use permits, which would require participating businesses to obtain approval from a local neighborhood organization. Supporters said the initiative would help curb a potential loss of cannabis tourists to California and Nevada, both of which approved recreational cannabis on Nov. 8. ◆ Our Exhibitors, by Business Type Category/Exhibitor Booth # Accounting / Consulting / Legal / Insurance All Green Insurance.................................................649 Canna Advisors...........................................................636 Cannasure Insurance Services..........................534 Cover Cannabis...........................................................247 Denver Consulting Group / Cannascore........242 General Cannabis Corporation...... 148 & SuiteB Greenhaus Industries.............................................1317 MarijuanaBusinessOperations.com..................521 MariMed Advisors...................................................200 Medicine Man Technologies................................415 MedMen.................................................................Suite A Milestone Safety Group........................................ 646 MJardin.........................................................................300 SIVA Enterprises...................................................... 450 Specialty Insurance Partners.............................709 Strategic Pharma Inc............................................1518 Tax Defense Partners..............................................642 The Capsule Group.................................................. 444 United Cannabis Group...................................Suite D Vangst Talent Network.......................................2705 Viridian Staffing.........................................................729 Wurk..............................................................................2703 Xanders............................................................................315 Your Green Contractor............................................101 Advertising / PR / Marketing Lush Retail Environments...................................1519 Mad Displays.............................................................2702 Marijuana Marketing Gurus / JEMSU...........707 Marijuana Marketing Xperts............................1723 Strainz...........................................................................1301 was Cannabis Rep Network................................542 WeedShops.................................................................2711 Zem Media..................................................................1703 Hydroponics & Cultivation Products 4 Season Grow Systems........................................ 125 Advanced LED Lights...............................................115 AEssense Corp............................................................343 Aguair Inc.......................................................................114 AiroClean420..............................................................702 Airstream Innovations, Inc....................
