Now we have taken the next logical step and started the conversion work in the Austrian parent mill of Frohnleiten for the industrial production. This will ensure that FOODBOARDTM will be available on the market at the beginning of 2015 – in time for when the planned mineral oil regulation comes into force. Here too, things are moving: BMEL (German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture) presented its 3rd draft of the regulation at the end of July 2014. FOODBOARDTM meets the statutory requirements announced, and is already within the limits targeted for the long term. Plastic or cartonboard? The answer is clear and lies – thankfully – more and more frequently in the hands of consumers in the supermarket. The trend towards the most sustainable packaging material, cartonboard, is being maintained. Mayr-Melnhof Karton has already been offering a diverse range of cartonboard qualities with environmentally friendly barriers for a long time (freeze or grease qualities), which are usually able to replace packaging with plastic coating (polyethylene). This is good for the environment, our customers and a sustainable economy. I N NOVATION FOODBOARD TM Conversion Work in the Frohnleiten Mill Top Last year we introduced you to MMK‘s new product line for virgin fibre cartonboard qualities, and now the spotlight is on our recycled cartonboard qualities: The new WLC campaign is ready under the motto „Born Again. And Again.“ The extensive range of GD/GT products is versatile and informatively portrayed in the WLC sample book, and presented on the basis of attractive finishing methods. Franz Rappold Member of the Board 4,000 m3 of concrete laid, 40,000 metres of renewed cabling: The restructuring and expansion work in MM Karton‘s Austrian parent mill in Frohnleiten for the production of FOODBOARDTM has begun. Security of supply is guaranteed during this phase. FOODBOARDTM will be available on the market from the beginning of 2015. With FOODBOARDTM Mayr-Melnhof Karton has developed a new, high-quality, coated recycled cartonboard with a unique functional barrier for safe food primary packaging. FOODBOARDTM protects packed food against defined, unintended substances such as mineral oils, phthalates, DIPN and Bisphenol A, and thereby represents a quantum leap in product safety. With additional features such as preserving the original taste and smell of the food, extending the shelf-life as well as longer crunchiness for packed food and light grease resistance properties, FOODBOARDTM is rightfully seen as „The Next Generation of Cartonboard“. Conversion work in the Frohnleiten mill The FOODBOARDTM investment project requires the complete conversion of the coating section on board machine 3, reinforcement of the foundations and the construction of various ancillary facilities in our Frohnleiten mill. The work is proceeding apace. As a result, the machine will have even more effectiveness in the future as well as working with increased energy efficiency. The entire work in Frohnleiten to convert to the „inline production“ of FOODBOARDTM will take about three months whereby the cartonboard machine will be switched off for around three weeks in November 2014. By proactively producing standard grades in high demand in advance, we will guarantee the highest possible security of supply even during the conversion phase. In addition, our proven MultiMill concept – production of specific types of cartonboard in various group locations – will secure a seamless supply of cartonboard. FOODBOARDTM will be available on the market at the beginning of 2015 – well in time before the planned mineral oil regulation comes into force. As things are also moving from a legal point of view: FOODBOARDTM is in full compliance with the provisions of the 3rd draft of the mineral oil regulation. On July 24, 2014, the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) presented a further draft for the planned legislation, „22nd Amended Ordinance regarding the Commodities Regulation“ (Mineral Oil Regulation). The current draft relates to food contact materials which are produced using recovered paper materials, and it once again sets limits for the migration of MOSH (mineral oil saturated hydrocarbons) and MOAH (mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons). Indirect migration from the outer- and transport packaging is included in the limits. Industry and associations could submit comments and suggestions regarding the draft until the middle of September 2014. Then there may be a further hearing or changes may be made to the draft. Experience shows that the EU notification process and coordination with WHO can take up to one year. This means that the regulation cannot be passed by the German parliament before the second half of 2015 at the earliest. Thereafter there will be a transition period of 24 months after promulgation. FOODBOARDTM meets the statutory requirements announced as well as the stricter detection limits targeted by the authorities in the future. Consequently there is no need for consumer goods manufacturers or retailers to invest in and for expensive adaptations of primary and secondary packaging to prevent migration during transportation, storage and at the point of sale, as FOODBOARDTM guarantees food safety along the entire supply chain. MMK Cartonboard Barriers S U STAI N AB I LIT Y the Environmentally Friendly Solution Frozen vegetables, convenience food – packaging for greasy and/or moist products normally has a polyethylene lamination (PE lamination). For many of these applications, Mayr-Melnhof Karton is offering an environmentally friendly alternative not involving plastic: cartonboard qualities with barriers. Taking into account our responsibility towards the environment and coming generations, we have developed an extensive range of specially treated types of cartonboard on a recycled and virgin fibre basis with environmentally neutral barriers. Instead of a lamination with PE foil, we work with the technique of so-called surface preparation. In this process, barriers are applied by means of a size press, e.g. moisture barrier, „Freeze“, or grease barrier, „Grease“. We currently offer the following solutions: • Freeze: Cartonboard products, whose layers are sized as a protection against moisture, are called Freeze grades. This cartonboard or liner with moisture barrier is used for chilled or frozen food, fruit crates or yoghurt multipacks. • Grease: Cartonboard is given a grease barrier to protect the packaging from annoying grease spots and discolourations. Depending on how greasy the product is, the fat-repellent protection is applied either only to the reverse side of the cartonboard or also to the front. This solution is used for cartonboard packaging containing greasy food (e.g. bakery products and confectionery, snacks, fast food, soup cubes), pet food or greasy technical products (e.g. ball bearings). • Freeze & Grease: These special cartonboard grades combine the technologies of the moisture barrier, „Freeze“, and the grease barrier, „Grease“. This special barrier is suitable for very greasy frozen products such as puff pastry, baked or breaded food. With regard to converting, our barrier solutions stand out on account of their high functionality and excellent machine performance during finishing and packing, and they therefore guarantee the best printing results and high converting performance. Like all our cartonboard qualities, these special grades are also completely recyclable, bio-degradable and they meet all international packaging guidelines and statutory food regulations. Consumers, the trade and manufacturers rightfully expect safe, environmentally friendly packaging solutions. The aim now and in the future must be to rely on packaging materials which meet the principles of sustainability – renewable, recyclable/reusable, climate-friendly. The very good response rate from the almost 1,600 folding carton manufacturers, consumer goods producers, paper and cartonboard merchants and retailers to whom the survey was sent, was around one quarter. We hope that the summary of the results which we sent you, will give you an important insight into the packaging supply chain and its future. 3 20140904_MM_nl_September_EN.indd 3 15.09.14 18:29 NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2014 TRADE FAR E UPDATE MM Karton at the Most Important Industry Events MMK was represented at two events in the shape of RosUpack, the largest packaging fair in Russia, and the Heidelberg Info Days at the printing machine manufacturer‘s, „Heidelberger“, Germany; two events which differ considerably in terms of size and audience, but whose resumés have always been unambiguously impressive. RosUpack June 17 to 20, 2014, Moscow RosUpack, the largest packaging fair in Russia, CIS countries and Eastern Europe, was held in Moscow from June 17 to 20, 2014. Over 700 companies from 38 different countries, among them almost all the major folding carton manufacturers as well as cellulose, paper and cartonboard producers, presented new production technologies, innovative techniques and trends, thereby reflecting the whole diversity of innovative products for packaging solutions. MM Karton was the communicative hub with its central, well-designed stand which attracted numerous business partners and trade visitors, and during the fair, had a dialogue with over 100 different companies. The main topics of conversation were the current situation in the packaging industry, the present mood of the market and the further development of the sector in Russia. AccurateTM, the new white GC2 quality from the Dutch mill in Eerbeek, generated lively interest among many visitors, and the announcement that FOODBOARDTM will be supplied from the beginning of 2015, was met with enthusiasm. A new trend emerged due to high demand: the subject of „highly decorative, corrugated packaging solutions“! As the leading supplier of white top coated liner qualities in the Russian market, MM Karton is best placed to meet this demand. RosUpack 2014: Attractive MMK stand Heidelberg Info Days June 4 to 5, 2014, Heidelberg What is behind the innovations, and how will customers benefit from them? What new opportunities and potential will materialise? The Heidelberg Info Days at Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Germany) try to find answers to these questions. Designed as a series of events on different topics from the areas of technology, services, consumables and special applications, this year‘s Info Days focused on the subject of „Top Performance for the Packaging Industry“. Over 250 customers and folding cartonboard experts experienced a world premiere: the offset printing ma- chines, Speedmaster XL 145 with a top performance of 18,000 sheets and the Speedmaster XL 162 with 16,500 sheets, were on display for the first time in the Wiesloch-Walldorf location. MMK cartonboard qualities were used as the printing material. The GC2 grade, KromopakTM 300 gsm was printed with an image from the cosmetics industry, and the GD2 grade Multicolor MirabellTM 300 gsm ran with a pizza motif. The further converting steps using the latest generation of glueing machines and die-cutting machines were then demonstrated, and the following great result was unanimously confirmed: both cartonboard qualities and both motifs showed excellent printing and converting results!
