SETTING THE GOLD STANDARD
FOR THE PRINCE’S TRUST
Since our partnership with The Prince’s Trust began, Cunard’s guests, crew and employees have raised over
half a million pounds and helped change the lives of nearly 600 young people. Now a Gold Patron, we have
pledged to raise a further £500,000 by 2013. Recently, we were also able to offer a rewarding opportunity
to twenty-year-old Candace Mohamed.
Hampered by dyslexia, Candace left school
at 15, when relations with her mother broke
down. She left home, slept in parks and
railway stations, then sold drugs to get by.
She was soon arrested. Desperate for a
fresh start, but not knowing where to
turn, Candace ended up suffering
from depression.
Then she discovered The Prince’s Trust Team
Programme. Upon learning of her aspiration
to become a chef on a cruise ship, The Trust
approached us about a work placement. We
were overjoyed to help and invited Candace
to complete our White Star Academy
training course on Queen Victoria.
The White Star Training Academy is a
two-part course that all new crew joining a
Cunard vessel must pass. The first half, six
days in this case, is spent in class, learning
Cunard’s history and ethos, and the
workings of the ship. There is also a more
specific element – in Candace’s case, part
of this instruction included basic food

Culinary Ambassador, Jean Marie

Candace received special guidance from

Candace started the second part of her

that I did myself proud despite being the

Chef and some guests on my last day. It
was amazing to get such positive feedback!”

We’re sure she would do us proud.

On Friday 8 October, after all the months of
media coverage and widespread anticipation,
Southampton caught its first ever glimpse of
Queen Elizabeth, the latest Cunard ship to
carry the city’s name around the globe. The inky
darkness that lingered as she passed the Isle of
Wight soon gave way to a pale morning light, and
she emerged from the mist to reward the hundreds
who had gathered along Southampton Water in

A small flotilla had gathered to escort the final stages of her
return from the Fincantieri shipyard in northeastern Italy:
fireboats sprayed powerful jets of water up into the air and
other vessels blasted their whistles. A helicopter buzzed
overhead, flag-waving guests lined the decks on the other
ships in port, and people sought out all manner of vantage
points to find the best view. All looked on eagerly as the sixth
ever Cunard Queen passed Mayflower Park at 7.45am
before berthing at the Ocean Terminal in the Eastern Docks
at around 9am, as the early sun cast a golden glow onto
her sides.
Queen Elizabeth had arrived home.
It was a homecoming that began over a week earlier when
Cunard officially took ownership of our new ship at a
ceremony in Monfalcone on Thursday 30 October. Shortly
after the signing of the final documents, the Italian flag that
had fluttered on the main mast was slowly lowered; to take its
place, Third Officer Matthew Wilson raised the Red Ensign,
the emblem of the British Merchant Navy. Then Captain Wells
ascended to the bridge – his bridge – to announce that
Queen Elizabeth now belonged to Cunard. At this,
a huge cheer resonated around the decks, and Cunard’s
Engineers and Deck Officers busied themselves. They were
now at the controls.
Once the crew had made all the necessary preparations,
Captain Wells invited them to gather on deck to witness the
moments when the last lines were released for departure.
At around 3.30 that afternoon, Queen Elizabeth’s new
Master guided her away from her berth toward the Adriatic
Sea. Meanwhile, everyone aboard showed their gratitude by
raising a huge, heartfelt cheer in honour of the Fincantieri
shipyard workers, who were now waving farewell to the ship
to which they had given so much.
Yet there was plenty of work still to do. Eight days separated
Queen Elizabeth from Southampton, during which time
skilled craftsmen put the finishing touches to the elegant
restaurants and lounges to ensure that she arrived looking her
best, and the Queen Elizabeth Theatre Company
carried out their final rehearsals. After all, two very important
appointments lay ahead – the Naming Ceremony and her
Maiden Voyage.

QUEEN ELIZABETH
Monday 11 October was the moment we had all been waiting for. A royal occasion no less.
With that, the royal party descended to the dockside, where
Cunard’s President and Managing Director, Peter Shanks, spoke
passionately about Cunard’s history and Her Majesty’s close
association with our ships. Anthony Inglis and the Band of the
Coldstream Guards led a powerful rendition of ‘God Save The
Queen’, that we’re sure provoked more than a few tearful eyes.
And then the moment itself. Captain Wells invited Her Majesty
to the lectern. Our monarch rose. Two thousand guests held
their breath.
Glorious blue sky stretched over the Ocean Terminal in Southampton. And Her Majesty The Queen
arrived to bestow an enormous honour: naming our newest ship at a wonderful ceremony that will live
long in the memory of all present.
Once the royal car had completed its stately progress
towards the gleaming new Cunard ship, a very special tour
began. After offering a warm welcome, Captain Wells showed
Her Majesty around the bridge; as Her Majesty pushed the
button that sounded the ship’s mighty whistle, two thousand
gathered guests gasped and laughed outside, realising that
they were watching a live feed on the big screen.
Her Majesty had taken the tour party by surprise by requesting
an extra stop along her itinerary to look inside one of the
suites. Then the 800-seat Royal Court Theatre beckoned,
where Her Majesty officially acknowledged one of the
16 private boxes as the Royal Box.
Reaching the majestic Grand Lobby, Her Majesty graciously
appreciated the cheers and applause of the assembled crew
who looked on in admiration from its three levels. There was,
of course, a pause to admire two signature artworks in residence
here: a resplendent marquetry panel depicting the original

David Linley; then Her Majesty’s own portrait and a meeting
with its talented painter, Isobel Peachey. Her Majesty then left a
wonderful record of this historic visit, as her signature became
the first to grace Queen Elizabeth’s guest book.

“I name this ship Queen Elizabeth. May God bless her and
all who sail in her.”
With those famous words, Her Majesty pressed the button that
sent the Jeroboam of Cunard's private label Baron de Rothschild
2009 white wine crashing onto the starboard side of the ship.
It smashed dramatically against the ‘Q’ of her name. Streamers
swirled around that magnificent silhouette, pipers played and
smiles beamed everywhere. Amidst all this incredible celebration,
Her Majesty left to rapturous applause.
We were thrilled and honoured to receive a letter from
Her Majesty in which she said “Thank you and Captain Wells
for such a colourful and memorable occasion” – a perfect
acknowledgement of another momentous day in our
illustrious history.

This is the third Cunard ship to bear
the name, and we are proud that
Her Majesty has attended the launch
of all three – the only person to do
so. Her Majesty was present as a
12-year-old when her mother launched
Queen Elizabeth in 1938, then
sent Queen ElizabetH 2 edging
down the slipway into the Clyde in
September 1967. Her Majesty has
also launched two other Cunarders:
Caronia in 1947 and, most recent
of all, our flagship Queen Mary 2
in 2004.

His talk entitled ‘Interviews I Shall Never Forget’
captivated an entire audience with insightful
recollections and laugh-out-loud anecdotes. He left an
equally indelible impression in our new ship’s guest
book, writing only the second message onto its pages.
As Queen Elizabeth left the Iberian mainland, she
hosted a first proposal of marriage on board – warm
congratulations to Jim McCracken, Mayor of Freedom
Township in New Jersey, and his new fiancée,
Lisa Lehman from Pennsylvania! Soon enough, our new
ship was basking in the warmth of the Atlantic Isles.
Aside from the now familiar flotillas, Gran Canaria
gave our newest ship a lively send-off, courtesy of a
parade of beeping classic cars and crackling fireworks.
The next day on Tenerife, guests looked on as soldiers in
traditional uniform saluted us with two volleys of musket fire.

After La Palma, Madeira provided the final call, as well as a
torrential downpour, the first bad weather of the voyage.
However, the rain clouds certainly had a fabulous silver lining in
store, as Lulu paid us a visit for two roof-raising performances in
the Royal Court Theatre. Having thrilled her audience with
energetic renditions of classics like ‘Shout’, she introduced a
special guest, Kiki Dee, and
even donned an Elton Johnstyle hat and sunglasses for a
duet of ‘Don’t Go Breaking My
Heart’! With two more
celebrity signatures added to
the guest book, they said their
goodbyes. Lulu commented
that she’d loved every minute
and even sang as she
descended the gangway,
much to the delight of the
watching guests.

Captain Christopher Wells & Sir David Frost
to add another
one-off masterpiece to
Queen Elizabeth’s incredible art collection. Respected
modern impressionist, Sherree Valentine Daines was on board to
discuss her work and, on the penultimate day at sea, painted a
portrait of Captain Wells in the Garden Lounge, which went on
display in the Art Gallery the following day.
And then it was time for our
new Queen to return home
to Southampton, where
happy guests departed with

several mementos, including

F OUR MEN IN A BOAT
There’s more than one way to cross
the Atlantic, as our guests aboard
Queen Mary 2 discovered during
an eastbound crossing in July.
Following a chance conversation,
Captain Bates had heard of an attempt
to break a 114-year record for rowing
the 3,250-odd miles between Battery
Park, Manhattan, and the Scilly Isles, set
by two Norwegian fishermen. A call to
the team’s HQ revealed that the intrepid
quartet in the boat Artemis Investments
– Leven Brown (37), Don Lennox (41),
Ray Carroll (33) and Livar Nysted (39)
– were on a similar course. Incidentally,
Ray used to work on our flagship!
On Sunday 24 July, we made
contact. Guests looked on as one of
Queen Mary 2’s fast rescue boats
zoomed out to film the encounter.
We had wanted to send over a meal,
though this may have broken the
rules – a hot lunch would just have to
wait! Captain Bates, on his last
Transatlantic Crossing, broadcast his
radio conversation on board, and the
message from Artemis was:
A Splendid Arrangement
“Thank you very much. We’ve been
45 days at sea now. We’re closing in
on a world record and, to be honest,
this has really made our trip.”
We’re delighted to report that the team
smashed the record, crossing in 43 days,
21 hours, 26 minutes and 48 seconds
– almost two weeks quicker than the
55 days set in 1896!

extremely happy retirement after 45 years of dedicated service
with Cunard Line, during which he has stood at the helm of many
legendary ships, including QE2 and Queen Mary 2.
Over the years, Captain Bates has endeared himself to guests
and colleagues alike, thanks to his incredible warmth, charm,
friendliness, and great sense of humour – we’re sure everyone
will fondly remember the whimsical sayings of his alter ego,
Patrick O’Shaughnessy! Naturally it seemed
right to give him a suitable send-off.
Guests had an opportunity to wish him well
during his final voyage amidst Norway’s
fjords. During the Cunard World Club
Ball, we presented him with a beautiful
silver and crystal decanter and a
painting of QE2 and our flagship,
Queen Mary 2. It was the first time
many of those in attendance had seen
Captain Bates lost for words!

On his final day at sea, the ship’s company honoured
Captain Bates in the Crew Mess, bringing hundreds of gifts
and kind words, before a celebratory farewell party that
evening. Then, on 28 August 2010, Captain Bates walked
down Queen Mary 2’s gangway for the final time as the
ship’s Master, before being whisked away in a waiting car.
Happy retirement, Captain Bates, and thank you for everything.

Sotm Sithandiwe Jack Nkukwana
Officer’s Mess Chef
They say an army marches on its stomach, and this sentiment is
true with QUeen Victoria’s crew. So we are incredibly
grateful to Sithandiwe who, since taking on the role of chef, has
transformed dining in the officers’ mess. He has placed extra
emphasis on presentation and introduced greater variety,
including several themed lunches. The pride Sithandiwe takes in
his food always shines through and he has a permanent smile on
his face.
Because One Voyage Leads To Another!
There’s something about exploring with Cunard that seems to entice guests to plan a new adventure before
disembarking. With the expansion of our fleet, we have recruited some new Voyage Sales Specialists and
Cunard World Club Representatives and are pleased to introduce three of them here.
Eli Iniesta
Queen Elizabeth
Hailing from Barcelona,
Eli worked in Italy as a
summer rep in Lake
Garda and in a ski
resort close to Turin
before joining QE2 in
2005 as a receptionist
and auditor. A promotion to Captain’s
Secretary and Technical Secretary, and a
transfer to Queen Victoria followed.
This year, Eli supported Chief Engineer
Colin Black as his Technical Secretary
during Queen Elizabeth’s
construction and served as Captain’s
Secretary to Captain Wells on the Maiden
Voyage, before taking up her role as
Voyage Sales Specialist.
Michelle Marchant
Queen Victoria
Michelle always had a
burning desire to join
the 'Most Famous
Ocean Liners in the
World', which stemmed
from a long-held
longing to work
aboard a ship. She achieved the first part
of her ambition in 2002 by joining the
Cunard Reservations Team, then moved to
the Fleet HR Department in 2005 where
she looked after the entertainment
personnel. This October, Michelle
fulfilled her dream by taking on the role
of Voyage Sales Specialist aboard
Queen Victoria.

Phil Dargan
Queen Mary 2
In 2004, Phil made a
bold career change,
turning his back on the
telecommunications
industry to follow his
first passion – travel.
He set up his own
cruise travel agency and built up a
successful business over the next six years.
When the opportunity arose to join the
Cunard team, Phil jumped at the chance:
“What more could I ask than to be working
on board the legendary vessels of Cunard
and getting a chance to see parts of world
I have yet to experience?

Mary Ann Austria
Receptionist
Mary Ann has only worked with our team for a short while but
has already made a very positive impression. Committed and
energetic, she's always eager to assist guests and find a way to
resolve their issues or problems. Mary Ann is equally committed
when it comes to helping out her colleagues. We’ve yet to find a
task too daunting for her, and ‘no’ simply isn’t in her vocabulary.
Mary Ann, you are a valuable asset to Cunard.
Make an appointment for acupuncture or an Indian Ayurvedic consultation; feel energised
