10/2/2009 UNIT 1 CULMINATING ACTIVITY THE 1920’S TIME CAPSULE The Roaring Twenties: The period of 1920 to 1929 was called this because of the significant revolutions going on in North American society. The nation was becoming more urbanized, consumer hunger for new inventions drove the economy, and the pace of life quickened as social rules became more relaxed. BACKGROUND The year is 2029. A time capsule is unearthed in downtown Toronto as construction begins on a new hockey arena that is guaranteed to make Toronto a “world class” city. When it is opened it is discovered that the time capsule was buried in 1929, so that people in the future may have an idea of what the decade of the 1920’s was like. The capsule is designed to provide a “picture” of the so-called “roaring twenties”. INSTRUCTIONS: 1) You are to work in groups of 3-4 students. You are to create the time capsule, which should fit into a box that is the approximate size of a shoebox. The box should be decorated in a manner reflecting the 1920’s. Within the time capsule are a number of items: EACH member of your group is responsible for contributing FOUR items that represent the time period of the “roaring twenties”. THREE of these items are to be artifacts that contributed to making the 1920’ “roaring”. These items must be original creations (or real items that you have modified to reflect the time period). The fourth item must be the picture of a Canadian personality who left a significant impact on the 1920’s. b) EACH member of the group is to include a card for each of the items in their time capsule. The card should have a backing of coloured construction paper – a different colour for each group member. The card should be approximately 4 x 6 inches (10 cm x 15 cm) in size. Glued on the front of this card should be a piece of paper which has a brief paragraph that describes the artifact, its purpose and why/how it contributed to the 1920’s as a period that could be described as “roaring”. This card should also include an MLA citation that demonstrates the source you used to decide to include this item in your time capsule. c) EACH group member is to prepare their Canadian personality picture in the same way, using coloured construction paper. On the back of your “Canadian personality” card you are to describe the contribution of your chosen Canadian and their significance in Canadian history. Once again, it should include an MLA citation that demonstrates your source. a) 2) The sources for your research will include your textbook, the “old textbooks” in class and the Canadian Scrapbook series. You may also consider doing some research on the Internet on your own. 3) This is to be completed by: 10/2/2009 THE 1920’S TIME CAPSULE RUBRIC NAME: CRITERIA Knowledge/ Understanding Appropriate inclusion of the required number of artifacts. BACKGROUND You are working for the Royal Canadian Mint. You have been assigned the task of creating a 4 coin “quarter” (25 cent) series commemorating significant events, inventions and/or personalities of the 1920s. The series is designed to provide a “picture” of the so-called “roaring twenties”. INSTRUCTIONS: 4) You are working alone. You are to create four proposed quarters, each on an 8 ½ x 11 sheet of paper. The following criteria is to be followed: TWO of the quarters are to depict inventions that contributed to making the 1920’ “roaring”. TWO of the quarters are to depict a Canadian personality or event that left a significant impact on the 1920’s. These must be original drawings. b) On the back of each of the papers presenting your coin images you are to write a brief paragraph that describes the image and why/how it contributed to the 1920’s as a period that could be described as “roaring”. At the end of the paragraph you are to include an MLA citation that demonstrates the source you used to decide to include this image in the quarter series. a) 5) The sources for your research will include your textbook, the “old textbooks” in class and the Canadian Scrapbook series. You may also consider doing some research on the Internet on your own. 6) This is to be completed by: 10/2/2009 THE 1920’S COIN SERIES RUBRIC NAME: CRITERIA Knowledge/ Understanding Appropriate and relevant inclusion of the required number of coins.
