? What’s New...at October 2015 A newsletter for Lutheran Senior LIFE participants and family members Executive Director’s Corner Fall is my favorite season. The mild temperatures and colorful leaves almost force you to slow down and enjoy the scenery. I’m learning that taking a minute to slow down and be in the present is so important. Many days I’m in the office by 7:00am and before I know it is Wanda Cooper 1:30pm and some of you are already starting to leave for Vice President & Executive Director the day. The day isn’t complete for me until I’ve connected with you even if it is just a few minutes. I recently heard a short lecture about knowing your what and your why. If you fully understand WHY you are doing something, then WHAT you are doing will have more impact. The work that staff is doing to make Lutheran Senior LIFE the best program for seniors is WHAT we are doing. Talking to you, hearing what you like and what you need is WHY we are working so hard. Slowing down and being in the present forces us to listen to our WHY and then our WHAT makes so much more sense. Happy Fall. D. Johnson R. Serrano C. Posters Promote Flu Prevention Flu season is here, and Lutheran Senior LIFE wants to ensure that all of our participants remain healthy and flu free this year. It’s our #1 goal that everyone receives the flu vaccination over the next few weeks, including staff. Thank you to the participants that helped us by creating posters (shown below) to encourage everyone to get their flu shots. If you have questions about the vaccine, please feel free to discuss it with any of the clinic staff. We are here to help you stay healthy and beat the flu bug this winter. S. Hardhouse C. Stewart C. Lutheran Senior LIFE staff decided to assist by walking around the LIFE center with participants and donating $2.00 every time they completed a circle. Some participants contributed by walking and having their feet photographed to help promote the walk. You can find their pictures on the Lutheran Social Ministries of New Jersey FaceBook page. Some of the steps were short and some were long but they all counted and will make a huge difference for others in need. Halloween is thought to have originated around 4000 B.C. Americans purchase nearly 600 million pounds of candy a year for Halloween. This is the equivalent of 16 billion fun size Snickers bars or 158 trillion individual Candy Corns. Trick-or-treating evolved from the Celtic tradition of putting out treats to placate spirits at Samhain, a sacred festival that marked the end of the Celtic calendar year. The first Jack O’Lanterns were actually made from turnips. The word “witch” comes from the Old English wicce, meaning “wise woman.” 377 Jersey Avenue, Suite 310, Jersey City, New Jersey 07302 | www.lifelsmnj.org | 1-877-543-3188
