 BIO-Asia Programme This programme is aimed at strengthening high-level collaborations with
Asian scientific communities, based on mutual benefit and shared interests. The main themes are
the study of biodiversity and sustainable use of natural substances for health, nutrition, agronomy
or cosmetics. BIO-Asia funds research projects (basic and applied) conducted by networks that
include France and at least two partner countries in Asia. The following countries are involved:
Myanmar (Burma), Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand,
Vietnam, China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, India, Pakistan. Each project receives €18-28 K from the
French Ministry of Foreign affairs to provide mobility for researchers (travel and subsistence) or
help with organising international workshops and seminars (mobility and logistics), and must be

ICT-Asia Programme: intended to enhance cooperation and scientific networks in the area of
ICT in Asia, to integrate the less advanced countries of the region into the information society,
and to improve synergy with other ICT-related regional and multilateral programmes (EU, ASEM,
ADB, AUF, etc.). An annual seminar is organised in Asia. Participating countries are the same as
for BIO-Asia. Each project involves France and at least 2 Asian countries, to include one that is
eligible for the “Solidarity with Developing Countries” programme (Myanmar [Burma], Cambodia,
India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam). Each project receives

innovative projects. They provide investigators (junior, senior, in the medical or scientific
community) in public and private laboratories with the funding needed to conduct projects on
infectious diseases, cancer and cardiovascular diseases, nutrition, food and water safety. There
are two types of grants: Advanced Research Grants and Starting Research Grants. Researchers
that are selected are awarded a two-year grant (up to €300,000). Institut Mérieux retains the
option of establishing strategic partnerships in the event of success.

Networked research programmes (P2R): initiated by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs in
2002, to promote the organisation of bilateral programmes for research networks. P2R networked
research programmes are theme-oriented (health, water, environment, etc.), and confined to a
limited number of countries (Germany, India, China, Israel, South Africa). Their aim is to promote
the development of cooperation on scientific priorities, while also fostering the creation of
thematic research networks.
