The 4th Double: Both Prussia (which we can view as Germany)

#73 Double Her Double – The 4th Double: Both Prussia (which we can view as Germany)
and Austria were defeated by Napoleon in 1806
The Hohenzollerns and Prussia. Of the various German states (and in this context we are not
including the Austrian Empire as a German state), Prussia would become the most powerful. It
would be Prussia that would unite the rest
of the German states together into what we
now know as modern Germany. Prussia
was militaristic. Prussia led Germany into
what it was to such a degree that people
often simply referred to the Germans as the
Prussians. The Prussians were led by the
Hohenzollern dynasty. The Prussians were
powerful in the 150 years leading up to
Napoleon, and after the time of Napoleon,
for they would unite the German states into
Germany in 1871, soon leading all
Germans to fight in World War I and World
Hohenzollern Castle
War II.
The dualism of Austria and Germany.
By this time, we see that Austria and
Germany had a well recognized dualism
as concerns the Holy Roman Empire. It is
easy to see this dualism, for the First Reich
of the Holy Roman Empire that Napoleon
ended in 1806 had the Austrian Empire’s
Habsburgs as its rulers, yet when Hitler
formed the German Third Reich, he was
looking back at the German roots of that
same First Reich of the Holy Roman
Empire. The main point of this particular
discussion is to understand that Napoleon
defeated both the Prussians (Germans) and
Austrians in 1806.
The Kingdom of Prussia at its greatest extent, at the
time of the formation of the German Empire, 1871
Key Understanding: Both Prussia and Austria were defeated by Napoleon in 1806. Napoleon
defeated the powerful Prussians (the leading German state) in 1806, and also forced the
ending of the Austrian-led Holy Roman Empire in 1806.
