Bee! I'm expecting you!
By Emily Dickinson
Bee! I'm expecting you!
Was saying Yesterday
To Somebody you know
That you were due—
The Frogs got Home last Week—
Are settled, and at work—
Birds, mostly back—
The Clover warm and thick—
You'll get my Letter by
The seventeenth; Reply
Or better, be with me—
Yours, Fly.
Draw your own picture of this poem, then write your own poem about a bee.

Caterpillars
by Aileen Fisher
What do caterpillars do?
Nothing much but chew and chew.
What do caterpillars know?
Nothing much but how to grow.
They just eat what by and by
Will make them be a butterfly,
But that is more than I can do,
However much I chew and chew.

Discovery
By Harry Behn
In a puddle left from last week's rain,
A friend of mine whose name is Joe
Caught a tadpole, and showed me where
Its froggy legs were beginning to grow.
Then we turned over a musty log,
With lichens on it in a row,
And found some fiddleheads of ferns
Uncoiling out of the moss below.
Additional Activities:
• Tell in your own words what it means to discover something.
• Write a paragraph about a discovery that someone has made.

Hurt No Living Thing
By Christina Rossetti
Hurt no living thing;
Ladybird nor butterfly
Nor moth with dusty wing.
Nor cricket chirping cheerily,
Nor grasshopper so light of leap
Nor dancing gnat, nor beetle fat
Nor harmless worms that creep.
Additional Activities:
• Replace the author’s choices of “living things” with your favorite living things.
• Make a list of actions that hurt others, then create a list of things you can do
instead. Draw a picture of your ideas!
