Imagine a church with worship, music, art, education, community programs and civic engagement rooted in our common beliefs and expressed with respect for our diverse experiences. Imagine a church that works hard to proclaim God’s justice, love and mercy for all creation. Imagine a church that says “All are welcome,” and really means it. Here at Trinity Cathedral, the Episcopal Church in downtown Cleveland, we seek to be that church. We strive to realize the promise of our architecture: a cathedral, a piazza, a commons, a sacred public space where God’s people gather, learn, pray and become faithful stewards of God’s bounty. I am pleased to present our 2012 Annual Report that highlights the accomplishments of this past year – once again it was one filled with change and challenge, endings and beginnings and hope and promise for Trinity Cathedral, Greater Cleveland and the world. It was great being in the middle of it all, and I look forward to continuing our journey together. Faithfully, The Very Rev. Tracey Lind, Dean All are welcome. We really mean it. 2 2012 Annual Report Photo Credits: Sam Hubish EDUCATION AND FORMATION WORSHIP Our life together at Trinity includes rites and rituals to mark many passages of life. In 2012, we held: 10 Baptisms 9 Confirmations 9 Receptions 7 Funerals/ Memorial Services 6 Weddings Trinity offers a wide variety of worship opportunities that reflect the breadth and depth of the Episcopal Church grounded in the teachings of Jesus, the respect for all faith traditions and the eternal oneness of God. From mostly jazz and bluegrass to choral and solemn sung eucharists, evensong, healing liturgy, noonday prayer, funerals, weddings, and diocesan services, we offer worship experiences at Trinity to meet almost everyone’s spiritual needs. In the fall, worship offerings were expanded with a new 5 p.m. Eventide Sunday service to attract college students and younger adults. Wednesday Evenings at Trinity continued to grow, in part due to the ever-increasing popularity of Choral Evensong followed by community supper and adult education. This beautiful liturgy is deeply rooted in the Anglican liturgical tradition—and we do it as well as any English cathedral. Our average weekly attendance for the past year was 475. On both Easter and Christmas we welcomed approximately 1,000 to the Cathedral. Trinity’s Flower and Altar Guilds ensured that at those services and on all Sundays, the spirit of each liturgical season was visually expressed through meaningful arrangements and table settings. We continued our ongoing lay reader and Eucharistic minister training program and also offered usher and acolyte training. “You need to know how really and truly energized I have become by the degree of genuine warmth, welcome and outreach that I have experienced since joining the Trinity family. I wake up in the mornings looking forward to the next opportunity I may have to come to church; something I never fully experienced before.” —Bill Mastin 3 At Trinity, we believe that spiritual formation, education, discernment and personal wellness is a lifelong journey, and we seek to offer a continuum of speakers, classes and study groups for all ages. In 2012, we welcomed Bishop Gene Robinson, the first openly gay bishop of the Episcopal Church; Bishop John Shelby Spong, pioneer of progressive Christianity; author Robert V. Taylor; Shane Claiborne, leader of the new monastic movement; the Rev. Kurt Wiesner of All Saints Episcopal Church, Littleton, N.H. and Trinity’s former Canon; and the Rev. Martin L. Smith, author and spiritual guide. In addition, many members of our congregation led a variety of classes, Bishop Gene Robinson workshops and small groups. On Sunday mornings, Dean Lind interviewed leaders, teachers, thinkers and artists in her Dean’s Forum, including: the Rt. Rev. Michael B. Curry, Bishop of North Carolina; the Rev. Thomas Faulkner, priest and sculptor; Dr. Marion Bleeke, associate professor of art history at Cleveland State University; author Jan Thrope; and Louis Alloro, social-emotional leadership facilitator. Wednesday educational offerings explored Walking the Way of the Cross, Sabbath, contemplative dialogue, blessed unrest, dystopia and utopia in film and spirituality for two halves of life. We continued to offer our ongoing class for adult inquirers, The Episcopal Church Welcomes You, Really! In Sunday morning Bible Study, Education for Ministry, Third Half of Life, Knitting Pearls, and a number of volunteer-led classes and book studies as well as discussion and support groups, Cathedral members studied, prayed and played together. During Lent, Trinity hosted “Walking the Way of the Cross,” fourteen contemporary sculptural meditations of the Stations of the Cross by Episcopal priest and sculptor Thomas Faulkner. Guided walks by Rev. Faulkner and online podcasts enhanced the work. In October, the Bible Challenge kicked off. As members make the one-year pilgrimage through Holy Scripture, Bible Challenge check-ins are held Wednesdays and some Sundays. Participants may also pose questions on the Bible Challenge blog as well as the Cathedral’s social media sites. Children and Youth In line with the Cathedral’s mission, goals, and focus areas (theology, biblical study, spiritual practice, community and service), 160 children and youth experienced a full and active year of meaningful worship, community, service and formation. A youth choir was formed with occasional performances at the 9 a.m. Sunday service. Up to 20 children, age 10 and younger, regularly participate in our Sunday morning Chapel Chats. The Sunday School program continues to utilize Godly Play and Workshop Cycles for the weekly curriculum as the children explore the traditions and history of the church. Photo Credits: Sam Hubish 2012 Annual Report MUSIC AND ART Photo Credits: Sam Hubish The Cathedral Choir, Trinity Chamber Singers, The Gateway jazz band, the Under Construction bluegrass band and the newly formed Trinity Children’s Choir continue to enhance our worship service and events. Musical highlights from 2012 included a performance of Arvo Pärt’s PASSIO on Good Friday, and a Mozart by Candlelight concert in November, featuring the Mozart Requiem. Youth in grades 6-12 were offered multiple overnights and weekend retreats at the Cathedral, as well as with the diocese. Eight of our youth participated in the confirmation class and were confirmed during the Easter Vigil. Twelve youth, twice the number of the previous year, participated in the Summer Mission Trip, and raised all of the funds for the outing. During the past year, we also increased the ranks of our youth leaders and chaperones. Trinity Cleveland Urban Service Corps In a program sponsored by Trinity Cathedral and with generous funding support from Trinity Parish, New York City, we welcome recent college graduates to Cleveland for a year-long urban service, residential immersion program. This year, the number of interns grew to eight individuals from an inaugural class of six. Participants live in community and serve at local nonprofits. Placement sites for the interns were: Cleveland Leadership Center; the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio; Famicos Foundation; Greater Cleveland Congregations; Marion-Sterling Community Partnership; Slavic Village Community Development Center; University Settlement Community Development Organization; and Young Audiences Artworks. Music and Art at Trinity Cathedral completed its 35th anniversary year, and began its 36th season in the fall, including a three-concert Brahms-Fest featuring instrumental and vocal chamber music of the German master. The annual Messiah-Sing enjoyed record attendance with 645 guests. Music and Art at Trinity was invited to be part of the first group of host organizations for Creative Fusion, a new program funded by The Cleveland Foundation. Armenian singer, composer and pianist Lucineh Hovanissian was based here at Trinity from September through November, participating in many facets of our music and worship life. The Visual Artists at Trinity led tours and talks at both the Cleveland Museum of Art and Lakeland Community College Art Gallery. In addition, they sponsored the Cleveland Artists Holiday Invitational exhibit held in the Gallery at Trinity Commons that included a gallery talk and artists roundtable. The Visual Artists at Trinity also added to the Medieval Feast festivities (Music and Art’s largest annual fundraiser) with an arts bazaar. “Warm and absolutely dynamic worship atmosphere, commandingly beautiful cathedral, and a unique music and art program! I had an incredibly enriching experience at Trinity.’’ —Lucineh Hovanissian, Creative Fusion Artist 4 2012 Annual Report NEIGHBORHOOD PROGRAMS In 2012, the demand for Trinity’s Sunday lunch program, A Place at the Table, remained critical. We served 10,988 lunches to 5,874 children, women and men. The Cathedral is the only location in downtown Cleveland to offer walkins a hot, indoor meal on Sunday afternoons. “We have hosted our last four benefit events at Trinity, and love how large, incredibly unique and flexible it is. The event and maintenance staff are attentive, accommodating and generous. All of this is a great combination when planning a distinctive fundraiser for our theatre for up to 500 people!” —Lindsay Doerr, Development Director, Near West Theatre PLACEMAKING Our ministry of placemaking—providing sacred public space in the heart of the city—continues to further the growth and vitality of both downtown Cleveland and the Campus District neighborhood. The Commons serves many goals, including encouraging civic conversation, building community and promoting economic development as well as providing high-quality and affordable conference, meeting and event facilities. This year saw the addition of the Campus District Inc. to our storefront, an organization connecting Cleveland’s downtown campuses by leading, providing, and promoting community development services. In 2012, we welcomed 32,000 individuals from the community and outside groups to Trinity Commons for meetings and events. The Center for Women at Case Western Reserve University, City Year Cleveland, Cleveland Metropolitan School District, Cuyahoga County Board of Elections, The George Gund Foundation, March of Dimes, Near West Theatre and North Coast Men’s Chorus are just a few of the many groups and organizations that use Trinity Commons’ meetings and event space and take advantage of its downtown location. Trinity Cathedral and Trinity Commons also hosted numerous diocesan events including the Middle School Pilgrimage and many diocesan ordinations, confirmations, meetings, gatherings, retreats and conferences. The Cathedral Library is open to all and features a diverse collection of adult and children’s books. Books are acquired through donations; library volunteers maintain and display the collection. Trinity’s volunteer docents offer hospitality to members and visitors by sharing information about the Cathedral’s art, architecture and history. 5 Trinity’s Urban Farm, located at East 35th and Cedar, has harvested more than 15,000 pounds of food since 2006 to help feed hungry and homeless people in Trinity’s neighborhood. Each week about six to ten volunteers help plant and harvest crops as well as plant trees and flowers that help beautify the neighborhood. Food from the farm is used to benefit hunger programs such as A Place at the Table, Blessings in a Backpack, Cleveland Foodbank and more. “I am glad we are able to include food from Trinity’s urban farm. It helps to make the connection that good, local food is available and that families can get involved in its production. It helps to break the McDonalds/KFC grip that keeps many families in a nutritional deficit.” —Jim Burger, Trinity member & Blessings in a Backpack volunteer Blessings in a Backpack continues to be a popular and necessary program for Trinity’s nearby Marion-Sterling Elementary School. Each Friday, children are given backpacks filled with healthy food and nutritional information to promote health and wellness. In 2012 distribution was increased from an average of 25 bags per week to 50 bags—providing healthy and nutritious food to approximately 140 people each week. This was made possible in part by a grant from The Reinberger Foundation. In addition, 90 baskets of food were delivered to Marion-Sterling children at Thanksgiving. 2012 Annual Report In 2012, Trinity kicked off a new neighborhood ministry, Angel Tree. Volunteers purchased, wrapped and delivered Christmas gifts to 29 area children who have an incarcerated parent. The program promotes reconciliation between those in prison and their families. CIVIC, INTERFAITH AND DIOCESAN LEADERSHIP Trinity Cathedral continues to be an active participant in the Marion-Sterling Community Partnership. In addition to providing tutors and enrichment opportunities, we support students with donations of school supplies, hats, gloves and mittens. Members of Trinity also volunteer at the school’s annual carnival, a celebratory end-of-year activity. During 2012, the Partnership was focused on improving academic performance, reducing absenteeism and eliminating behavioral problems that interfere with learning. Trinity, along with other partners, conducted an evaluation and assessment of the work being done by the Partnership and decided to recommit itself to assisting students, families, staff, teachers and the administration at Marion-Sterling. For a portion of the year, an intern was supplied to the Partnership through the Trinity Cleveland Urban Service Corps program. The Trinity MidTown FreshStop, run by volunteers from Trinity Cathedral and the MidTown neighborhood in cooperation with City Fresh, provided weekly fresh produce to 50 families living or working downtown. In 2012, Trinity continued its leadership in Greater Cleveland Congregations (GCC), a broad-based community organization of more than 40 congregations addressing issues in education, criminal justice, jobs, health care and food accessibility. Trinity volunteers participated in voter registration, canvassing, phone banking, and electionday support in the successful campaign for the Cleveland Metropolitan School District levy. GCC also convened the Northeast Ohio Medicaid Expansion Coalition, a collaboration of more than 30 different hospitals, health centers, mental health and substance abuse providers, advocates, consumer groups, and other stakeholders to speak with one voice from Northeast Ohio about the importance of Medicaid expansion. Dean Lind continues to serve as one of GCC’s co-chairs. The GCC Criminal Justice team, Canon Mebane and many Trinity members continue to work to end the state’s death penalty. In 2012, the Rev. Canon Will Mebane testified in support of abolishing the death penalty before the Ohio Senate Judiciary Committee. In December, Trinity members came together and remembered the shooting victims in Newtown, Conn., urging legislators to work for real gun reform at both the state and federal levels. Members had the opportunity through letters and calls to convey their thoughts on gun violence and gun reform to Ohio Governor Kasich and President Obama. Trinity clergy and laity also serve in leadership roles in the diocese, including participation on the Standing Committee, Commission on Ministry, Diocesan Council and Episcopal Peace Fellowship. CONGREGATIONAL CARE Almost 100 new members joined Trinity in 2012. Welcoming newcomers is one of our greatest joys at Trinity and this year the commitment to our newcomer program continued. The Cathedral’s Welcome Team of ushers and greeters was reorganized for greater efficiency. Training opportunities were held for the Welcome Team as well as Flower Guild volunteers, lectors and acolytes. Photo Credits: Sam Hubish 6 Trinity staff worked with the Cathedral’s small group leaders to support their important fellowship, ministry and outreach efforts. 2012 Annual Report The Care Corner section of Trinity’s website continues to offer another avenue for members to connect and serve. It allows parishioners to confidentially post tasks for which they need assistance or services offered, such as rides to church, yard work and more. SUSTAINABILITY The Cathedral and Trinity Commons continues to model institutional operating practices that promote environmental stewardship and the rebuilding of a sustainable city and region. We strive to educate our members, friends and neighbors on the challenges and opportunities of sustainability through forums, discussion groups and our Living Lightly Fair. Among our many green efforts, we participate in and support local food and community gardening; we strive to be energy efficient and encourage carpooling, walking and biking; and we seek to reduce landfill waste by practicing and promoting recycling. COMMUNICATIONS In 2012, Trinity launched a redesigned This Week @ Trinity (our weekly email newsletter) for improved readability to our more than 1,400 subscribers. A Bible Challenge microsite and email list was created to promote the year-long challenge, offer resources and create online space for participant dialogue and interaction. A dedicated landing page (www.medievalfeast.org) was created for the Medieval Feast fundraiser to allow for online ticket sales and further brand the annual event. Facebook fans increased to 860 and 370 people follow Trinity on Twitter. Trinity once again participated in the year’s Sustainable Cleveland 2019 Summit and Dean Lind continues to serve as a member of the Mayor’s Steering Committee. In 2012, the Dean spoke at a number of sustainability events in Northeast Ohio. Trinity continually assesses its efforts and activities at the Cathedral and Trinity Commons to ensure that everything from our custodial practices to supply ordering and heating and cooling processes are energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable, making improvements when and where needed. Future Leaders Fund Match the $100,000 pledged by the Rev. Ora and Mary Lou Calhoun Photo Credits: Sam Hubish In 2012 in thanksgiving for Tracey Lind’s 25 years of ordained ministry and her leadership as the eleventh Dean of Trinity Cathedral, the Rev. Ora and Mary Lou Calhoun pledged $100,000 over the next five years. The gift will fund the programs at Trinity Cathedral that train and mentor new clergy and will also support education and formation programs for youth and young adults. Members and friends of Trinity are invited to make a tax-deductible donation to the Future Leaders Fund to match the $100,000 pledged by the Calhouns. Please be a part of Trinity Cathedral’s future and make a gift today. 7 Special podcasts for the year included “Walking the Way of the Cross,” a guided tour of the 14-station exhibit by the Rev. Thomas Faulkner and Health & Wellness forums. In the fall, Trinity began podcasting Choral Evensong. These are in addition to podcasts of Dean’s Forums, sermons and guest lectures available on the website. Cathedral podcasts were accessed more than 255,000 times by 23,676 unique visitors; a 6.6% increase (in unique visitors) over last year. A well-rounded mix of earned and paid media on radio, TV, print and online outlets further strengthened the Cathedral’s position as a vital center for worship, music and arts in downtown Cleveland. Governance and Administration Several significant efforts were undertaken this year to support fiscal sustainability and ongoing property stewardship. A task force was established to undertake long-range financial planning. The property committee updated the master property plan and investigated potential investments in the physical plant to significantly reduce energy consumption and generate ongoing cost savings. The finance committee oversaw a complete reimplementation of the financial management system to allow for greater project-level financial and performance management. 2012 Annual Report Financial Report Trinity Cathedral Consolidated Operating Activities 2012 Actuals 2012 Budget INCOME Congregational Pledges, Contributions, Offerings, Gifts $679,954 $674,975 Grants $116,713 $183,190 Earned Income $287,585 $258,584 Friends Support $14,762 $20,000 $1,089,893 $1,094,625 $145,115 $229,941 $2,334,022 $2,461,315 Worship $392,949 $370,337 Diocesan Assessment $218,253 $228,000 Education & Formation $183,601 $198,414 Congregational Care $219,725 $227,786 Civic Engagement and Community Programs* $423,390 $450,950 Placemaking, Property & Grounds** $699,441 $776,062 Admin/Governance/Stewardship/Development $175,415 $208,992 $2,312,774 $2,460,541 $21,248 $773 Investment Transfers (5% Portion) Additional Draw from invested Funds EXPENSE Net Operating Activities * Civic & Community General Campus Outreach Peace and Justice Advocacy Marion Sterling Partnership A Place at the Table Backpack Program Urban Farm Urban Service Core Music & Arts Shared Services Artist in Residence Gallery ** Trinity Commons – $560,991 Trinity Cathedral – $138,450 8 2012 Annual Report STEWARDSHIP A life of Christian stewardship is lived most fully in a community where we can support one another in Christ.
