HOME SWEET HOME: The Padres return home to Petco Park after a seven-game road
trip from Colorado to Atlanta...the Padres took two of three against the Rockies, but lost four
straight to Atlanta, including a 5-4 loss in walk-off fashion last night.
• The Padres allowed just six runs in the three-game series against Colorado, the second-fewest ever allowed in a three-game series by the Padres at Coors Field...the
fewest-ever allowed by the Padres in a three-game series at Coors was three in September 2011 (ELIAS)...Wil Myers hit for the second cycle in Padres franchise history
on Monday to open the series at Coors, the first of the 2017 season and 313th in MLB
history...San Diego’s 6-0 shutout victory to close out the series on Wednesday was just
the fourth-ever shutout by the Padres at Coors Field and first since July 1, 2012.
• The Braves swept the Padres in four straight games in the inaugural series at SunTrust
Park...Atlanta has now beaten San Diego eight consecutive times, outscoring the Padres 51-22 over their winning streak.
• RHP Jered Weaver made his first-ever starts at Coors Field and SunTrust Park over
the road trip, leaving only the Mets’ Citi Field and Marlins Park as the only two active
ballparks in which Weaver has not tossed in...last night marked Weaver’s first career
start against Atlanta and he has now faced 29 of the 30 MLB teams, leaving only
his former team, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, as the only team he is yet to
play against...Weaver tossed 6.0 innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on three
strikeouts and no walks.
HE’S HEATING UP: After an 0-for-24 start to the 2017 season, C Austin Hedges has six
hits in his last 14 at-bats, including two doubles and two home runs.
• The Padres backstop had his second consecutive multi-hit game last night, including a
go-ahead, two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning on a 3-2 pitch.
• Hedges recorded his first multi-hit game of the season on Saturday night, including the
second part of the back-to-back home runs with OF Hunter Renfroe...he has now hit
safely in a career high four consecutive games.
ONE FOR THE MEMORY BANK: INF/OF Allen Córdoba hit a pinch-hit home run for his
first career homer in the top of the seventh inning last night to trim the Braves’ lead to 3-2.
• The last Padre to hit a pinch-hit homer for his first career home run was OF Alex Dickerson, last season on 5/10 at the Chicago Cubs...Dickerson hit a pinch-hit grand slam
that night, just the sixth Padre to ever hit a grand slam for his first career home run.
WALK THIS WAY: INF Ryan Schimpf leads all of MLB with 14 walks, two more than
Minnesota’s Miguel Sano, who has 12 free passes.
• Schimpf has five walks in the last four games and registered a career-high four walks
on 4/7 vs. SF...his .365 on-base percentage ranks second on the club (among players
with at least 13 at bats), behind only Wil Myers’ .383 OBP.
COSART TO START: RHP Jarred Cosart looks to build on his impressive 4.0 shutout innings at Coors Field from Monday...Cosart allowed five hits and just one walk while striking
out two in the Padres 5-3 victory.
• Cosart faced the Diamondbacks once last year on 8/19 and did not factor into the win,
despite tossing 5.2 innings of one run ball, allowing eight hits and two walks while
striking out seven.
• Cosart is looking for his first win since 9/17/15 (at WSH while with MIA)…currently, the
righty owns the longest active streak in the Major Leagues for the most consecutive
starts without a win (16)...the second most starts without a win belongs to Cleveland’s
Zach McAllister (14).
HE’S STILL STREAKING: INF Wil Myers went 2-for-5 yesterday to extend his hitting streak
to eight games and is hitting .438 (14-for-32) over that span since 4/9...his eight-game hitting streak is the second longest active streak in the National League, trailing only
Milwaukee’s Eric Thames’ 10-game hitting streak…Myers’ streak is tied for third-longest
active streak in all of the Major Leagues....Myers has hit safely in 12 of 14 games to start
the 2017 campaign.
• Myers ranks tied for first among National League leaders in hits (21) and multi-hit
games (seven), tied for second in extra base hits (10), seventh in batting average
(.368) and slugging percentage (.684), and tied for ninth in runs scored (10).
RANKS AMONG THE ROOKS: OF’s Manuel Margot and Hunter Renfroe rank among
National League rookie leaders in several offensive categories.
• Margot leads all NL rookies in runs scored (nine), hits (15), batting average (.268),
slugging percentage (.500) and total bases (28), tied for first in home runs (three), and
ranks second in doubles (four).
• Renfroe ranks tied for first among NL rookie leaders in home runs (three) and RBI (six),
second in hits (13) and slugging percentage (.436), and tied for third in runs scored
(three).
• Margot is 6-for-11 with a walk (.636 on-base percentage) leading off games for
the Friars in 2017.
