Required textbook:
Harris, Ann Sutherland. Seventeenth-Century Art & Architecture (2nd edition; Pearson/Prentice-Hall,
2008). Copies of both the 2005 and 2008 edition are on reserve in the University Library.
Recommended purchase:
Barnet, Sylvan. A Short Guide to Writing About Art (10 th edition; the 9th edition is on reserve)
Concise catalogue description:
European architecture, painting, and sculpture of the 17 th century (note: Rococo art of the 18th century will
not be covered this semester). Prerequisite: ART 1B or equivalent.
Learning objectives:
Students who have completed ART 107 successfully should be able to:
1) Discuss the main concepts, characteristics, and developments associated with Baroque art
2) Recognize a representative selection of 17th-century European art and artists
3) Explain how these artists reflected contemporary aesthetic, technical, social, political, and/or
religious concerns in their work
4) Develop and write a research paper that combines observation, critical thinking, and a synthesis
of information and ideas from several scholarly sources
Course requirements:
Course requirements include attendance, a written exercise on Italian Baroque art (due via e-mail on
September 22; 5% of the grade), an in-class essay test on Italian Baroque art (September 28; 20%), a
take-home test on Flemish Baroque painting (due on October 26; 20%), an in-class essay test on Spanish
and French Baroque art (November 16, 20%); a research paper on Dutch Baroque art (research paper
proposal and preliminary bibliography due on November 23, 10%; research paper due on December 17,
15%); and a written exercise (with a museum component) on Dutch Baroque art (due on December 7;
10%). All assignment instructions will be posted on SacCT and the Library website (electronic reserve).
Attendance and academic guidelines:
A grade penalty will be charged for four or more unexcused absences; students with more than two
unexcused absences are not eligible for extra credit. An “unexcused” absence is one that is not justified
or was not discussed with the instructor within twenty-four hours after the missed class.
