The Fourth Grade Times
This past week we have been reviewing basic geographical skills and
information that the students will need to apply throughout the year
during our Social Studies lessons. A map study guide was given to your
child to review this information. A quiz will be administered to the
students on Thursday, September 8th. They will not have to know how
to spell the continents and oceans, as a word bank will be provided.
During our math lessons next week we will begin working with
Factors and Multiples.
The factors of a number are whole numbers, When a given number is divided by its factors, it does not
leave any remainders. For example, 8 can be divided exactly by 2, so 2 is a factor of 8. The lessons on
factors will address the following objectives:

Find the common factors and greatest common factor of two whole numbers.

Identify prime numbers and composite numbers.
To find a multiple of a number, multiply that number by any whole number. For
example, what are the multiples of 3? 1x3=3, 2x3=6, 3x3=9, 4x3=12, 5x3=15, 6x3=18,
7x3=21, 8x3=24, 9x3=27, 10x3=30 Therefore, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27 and 30
are the first ten multiples of 3. During lesson 2.3 on
multiples, the lessons will address the following

RACE for Open Ended Response
Restate. Restate parts of the question as the start of
your answer.
Answer. Answer the question.
Cite examples from the text. Tell about parts of the text
that show that you know your answer to be true. Be
specific and include paragraph or page number.
Explain how these examples prove your answer to be
true. If you can, tell of a genuine connection.
We will be instructing the students on how to
apply this approach to Open Ended Responses.
The West View PTO provides funding for many of the wonderful activities
here at our school. This includes, but is not limited to, field trips, assemblies
and WV carnival day. Fundraising information to support these programs was
sent home with your child yesterday afternoon. Please consider supporting
the PTO, if you are able.
