Eighth Sunday of Ordinary Time
February 26, 2017
The thing that most delights me about nature is how utterly oblivious it is of us. Every
spring―and I’m jumping the gun here by a couple of months, I know―I just howl at the pictures
of birds that build their nests in wreaths hanging from doors, in baskets on bicycles, and even in
an old shoe left out on the porch.
Ha! Consider the birds of the air. They neither pay rent, nor fill out financial questionnaires.
They provide no references, and yet they set up residence in your bedroom window and don’t
even notice all your kids and relatives staring in wonder as they lay their eggs and incubate them
until they hatch, then feed their DARLING babies all kinds of gross worms that were apparently
living in your yard, and then teach them, somehow, to fly the coop. And they leave the nest a mess
and pay no damage deposit!
So, what do they know that we don’t? They know what we have forgotten, which is that the earth
is the Lord’s, and all the fullness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein (Psalm 24:1).
We see our high-rises and our traffic lights as symbols of civilization and order. Birds see them as
perfect spots to set up housekeeping, and build intricate nests and hatch their chicks right there on
top of the flashing marquees in Times Square.
Jesus wants us to lift up our eyes and remember what we once knew, before the Fall, before we began hoarding and sectioning off pieces of earth and calling them ours. There is sufficient sun, and seed, and rain to feed the world. Our Heavenly Father knows what we need. Do we?
How is what you want masquerading for what you really need?

Mission Statement
“Immaculate Conception is a faith community rooted in Jesus Christ and guided by the traditions, teachings, and practices of the Roman Catholic Church.
Since 1907 we have been and continue to be an open, welcoming and vibrant gospel presence in Lafayette, continually
strengthening the faith of the community and families through worship, education, and prayer.
We seek to be faithful stewards of God’s love to others through ministries that serve our community and impact upon
human concerns locally and globally.
We have been blessed with a rich diversity of people. Thus, we will continue to work toward the unity of all segments
of our parish so that the unique social and spiritual gifts of each segment can be both recognized and given for the good
of the whole community.
And in all this we continue to be pilgrims on our journey of life together, carrying out the work of Jesus Christ to which
we have been called.”

Ayúdanos a dedicar nuestras vidas, propósito y

PRAYER FOR PEACE IN 2017
Lord, we pray for the power to be gentle,
the strength to be forgiving, the patience to be
understanding and the endurance to accept the
consequences of holding to what we
believe to be right.
May we put our trust in the power of good to
overcome evil and the power of love to overcome hatred.
We pray for the vision to see and the faith to believe
in a world emancipated from violence,
a new world where fear shall no longer lead people
to commit injustice, not selfishness make them bring
suffering to others.
Help us to devote our whole life and thought and energy
to the task of making peace, praying always for the
inspiration and the power to fulfill the destiny for which
we and all people were created.

A LITTLE OF EVERYTHING
We invite you to The “Joy of the Gospel” Series Immaculate Concep on Catholic Church (715 Cabrini Dr. Lafaye e, CO 80026) Wednesdays 6:30‐8:00PM Mar 8 Mar 15 Mar 22 Mass Incarcera on Immigra on Solidarity “Jesus’ concern for the care of the hungry, the thirsty, the
homeless and prisoners (cf. Mt 25:34-40) sought to express the
core of the Father’s mercy. This becomes a moral imperative for
the whole of society that wishes to maintain the necessary conditions for a better common life. It is within a society’s capacity
to include the poor, infirm and imprisoned, that we see its ability to heal their wounds and make them builders of a peaceful
coexistence. Social reintegration begins by making sure that all
of our children go to school and that their families obtain dignified work by creating public spaces for leisure and recreation,
and by fostering civic participation, health services and access
to basic services, to name just a few possible measures.”
Pope Francis address to prison inmates at Ciudad Juárez 2/17/16

REGULATION ON FAST
AND ABSTINENCE
DURING LENT
Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are
obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
In addition, all Catholics 14 years old and older must
abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday
and all the Fridays of Lent.
Fasting as explained by the U.S. Bishops
means partaking of only one full meal. Some food
(not equaling another meal) is permitted at breakfast
and around midday or in the evening—depending on
when a person chooses to eat the main or full meal.
Abstinence forbids the use of meat, but not of
eggs, milk products or condiments made of animal
fat.
Abstinence does not include meat juices and
liquid foods made from meat. Thus, such foods as
chicken broth, consommé, soups cooked or flavored
with meat, meat gravies or sauces, as well as seasonings or condiments made from animal fat are not forbidden. So it is permissible to use margarine and
lard. Even bacon drippings which contain little bits
of meat may be poured over lettuce as seasoning.

Lenten Morning Retreat—March 11th ~ Immaculate Conception, Lafayette
Kathy McGovern, author of the bulletin insert The Story and You, joins us again to lead us in an examination of our eyesight, past and present. What things do we see much more clearly now than we did in the past? What things are we just
beginning to see? What things do we refuse to see?
Using her new Lenten booklet as a guide, Kathy will let the Lenten scriptures speak for themselves. Quiet, music, the
company of prayerful people. Let this Lenten morning be your gift to yourself.

Octavo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
Febrero 26, 2017

PARISH LIBRARY
Did you know Immaculate Conception has a parish library? The library
is full of hundreds of books on our
Catholic faith, and is located next to
the office. It’s easy to check out a book; simply fill out
the check-out sheet with your name, number and name
of the book. When you return it, simply cross off your
name.
The library will be open during office hours and on the
weekends after all Masses. If it happens to be locked,
simply ask a staff member for assistance. Take advantage of this wealth of information we have here.
