This Week Volume 15, Issue 31 24 May 2013 From the Principal: We are very pleased to report the success of our Young Enterprise company, `Ignite’ who competed against five other companies from five county schools to be named Leicestershire Company of the Year at a ceremony at the Holiday Inn, Leicester on Monday 20 May. Ignite will now go forward to the East Midlands regional final in Nottingham on 18 June. Alison Merrills Student Safety: We once again remind students about the need to be aware of their safety on their journeys to and from College. If anything happens on their journey which worries them, such as a member of the public speaking to them in a way which makes them feel uncomfortable, they should report it to their parents and to a member of staff. BE SAFE! Thought for the Week ‘Just remember, there's a right way and a wrong way to do everything and the wrong way is to keep trying to make everybody else do it the right way. ’ M*A*S*H, Colonel Potter COLLEGE CALENDAR ’ Term dates for 2012-2013 are available on the College Thought for the Week website: www.sjncc.leicester.sch.uk “The will to win important, theTerm will to prepare is vital.” 24 May CollegeisCloses forbut Half Joe Paterno 3 June College re-opens 13 June Summer Arts Festival Alison Merrills YOUNG ENTERPRISE SUCCESS REACHES NEW HEIGHTS The success of the Young Enterprise Company Ignite continued on Tuesday 20 May. They competed in the Leicestershire County Final at the Holiday Inn Hotel. They went through the same process as at the area final with setting up their trade stand, being interviewed by the judges and then giving a presentation about their experiences so far. At the end of the evening the nervous girls sat down awaiting the results. Out of the six awards available they won the New Media Award for the best advert, the Environmental Award and the best Financial Management Award. The announcement of the overall winner was then made and they are now the Leicestershire County Winners. They now go forward to the regional final in June to be held at the University of Nottingham on Tuesday 18 June to compete for a place at the national finals. The judges commented that they have a sustainable business and had taken social responsibility as a core theme for their business. If you would like to view the advert please visit http://sjnccnews.tumblr.com/ The girls have been absolutely fantastic so far this year and are reaping the rewards for all of their hard work. Mr Pope, Humanities Team LITERACY TIP OF THE WEEK Spelling Strategies 1 Chunking Chunking is what top spellers do. It’s the way we remember telephone numbers. Break long words into groups of three or four letters. This is to picture long words in smaller easy to imagine pieces. Some people refer to this as visualisation. Here’s a really long word which, admittedly, we’re unlikely to use but it serves our purpose! Antidisestablishmentarianism Anti dis es tab lish ment ar ian ism This is one of the longest words in the English language. However, once it’s been broken down, each chunk is just as easy to spell as any other small word. Break the word into 9 chunks. Each part is just as easy to spell as any other small word like ‘tree’ or ‘cat’. Try it with longer words such as alliteration or even supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Mrs Cowling, Lead Teacher Literacy YEAR 8 – START CHALLENGE SPOTLIGHT ON YEAR 11 The time has come to say our goodbyes and thanks. Exam Preparation Time has begun; there are no more ‘get ups’! After half term, we expect to see Year 11 in college now for lessons in which they still have exams. Make sure half term is a healthy balance of time off and revision so you are well prepared and confident. It was a huge pleasure to see everyone so beautifully turned out for the Prom last Friday. It was a fabulous evening, I am sure you will all agree. The last time we will see you all together again will be on Results Day - between 11am and 12 noon on Thursday 22 August. All that remains to be said is that it has been a great pleasure to be your Year Team Leader – I hope you will look back on your days at Sir Jonathan North with fond memories and I wish you all well in whatever you choose to do in the future. On Thursday 16 May fifteen students attended a ‘start challenge’ workshop at the Energy Academy in Leicester. The workshop was jointly run by Young Enterprise and the Federation of Small Businesses. The challenge was to become entrepreneurs for the day. They worked in groups of five to decide upon and design a product which could be sold to the public. They then produced marketing material and the first page of a website for their business. The groups came up with some fantastic ideas such as an environmentally friendly cosmetics range, animal based mobile phone covers and animal based furniture. They then had to pitch their ideas to two judges from the Federation of Small Businesses. All three groups produced superb presentations of their ideas and the judges scored two of them with exactly the same score. This meant that they had to go back to previous tasks undertaken earlier in the day. Buzz scored the highest on the business quiz and were declared the winners. They now have six weeks to produce a prototype, brochures, leaflet and a five minute presentation about their product. They will represent Leicestershire at an East Midlands business luncheon in September when they will compete against schools from Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire.
