FANNY BAY COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION Fannybaycommunity.com May 2016 Page 1 FANNY BAY COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION Fannybaycommunity.com May 2016 COALWATCH RAVEN COAL MINE PROJECT UPDATE On April 4, 2016 the BC Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) informed Compliance Coal Corporation that the EAO had made a decision to terminate the Raven Coal Mine Project Environmental Assessment (EA) review. In part, the decision was based on an assessment that continuation of an EA at this time would be neither efficient nor appropriate given the timing and readiness of the project to proceed with the EA. The decision by the EAO to terminate the Raven Coal Mine Project EA marks the end of the road for this project. On behalf of the CoalWatch Comox Valley Society board members, I would like to gratefully acknowledge those in our community who have supported CoalWatch’s efforts to raise awareness on the Raven Coal Mine issue over the past six years. The cumulative actions of those who have raised concerns regarding the Raven Coal Mine Project have made a difference in the final outcome. Quote from Margaret Mead: “ Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” For more detailed information go to: www.coalwatch.ca John Snyder President, CoalWatch Comox Valley Society 250-335-2246 PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THERE ARE CHILDREN PLAYING OUTSIDE IN THEIR YARDS NOW THAT WARMER WEATHER IS HERE. The tournament started at 9:00 am with coffee, muffins, a warm-up and a poem presented by the ladies to bolster their confidence and rattle the men's. Unfortunately, the poems seem to have had the opposite effect, goading the men into playing masterfully throughout the day. After the morning social, the coin was tossed at 9:30 sharp, with the ladies winning serve, and the tournament began in earnest! The first match of the tournament saw Alaine French and Ann Macoun battling Bill, Alaine's husband, and Curtis Johnson. Curtis, a notorious spinner with a wicked serve soon made it known he was here to win and Bill complemented his play with deadly overhead volleys at the net. Ann and Alaine fought back brilliantly but in the end, the men were victorious. Back Row: Barb Boyce, Val Pardiac, Judy Bligh, Ann Macoun, Cher Kuss, Kilby Howat, Linda Weaving. Front Row: Alaine French, Erin Sellers, Mary Bowen, Jackie Grant The first match set the tone for the ladies in the tournament. They just couldn't catch a break or establish a rhythm throughout the day. The "Pickleball Gods" were definitely favouring the men it seemed.....until a quarter of the way through the tournament when Judy Bligh and partner Barb Boyce decided enough was enough. They came out fighting with Judy placing her serves deep into the back court and Barb digging deep to return everything the men sent her way. The women had finally won a game!! Unbeknownst to the ladies, the men had plotted to collectively faint when the ladies became victorious. (See photo below). A huge laugh was had by all, especially the ladies!! Although the momentum from the ladies first win put them on the "comeback trail", it was ultimately, too little too late. The "picklers" played a total of 59 games in the tournament with the men finishing up 99 points ahead of the women. The top male scorer in the tournament was Glenn Mendoza with 111 points and Erin Sellers, the top female score with 53 points. The ladies accepted their defeat with grace vowing to change the outcome in 2017. The men took great Back Row: Bill Humphreys, Mark Tremblay, Bill French, Curtis Johnson pride attaching the year "2016" onto the blue side of Kneeling: Kurt Freiburghaus, Glenn Mendoza, Doug Runchey the two sided "Battle of the Sexes" trophy. The trophy is painted half pink and half blue with the year being placed on the winner's side. The men not only received individual trophies to take home but were treated to a drink, at the expense of the ladies, at the local watering hole, "The Fanny Bay Inn". There were plenty of laughs throughout the tournament, masterful plays and lots of excitement on the court! A good day was had by all the Fanny Bay Picklers. It is an event that teaches us all so many things about the resilience of nature and helps us understand what part we can play to contribute to a healthy environment. Okay, and it is a lot of fun too! During the River Never Sleeps we released the final 20,000 smolts of the 64,000 from our 2014 coho brood. So this leaves us with just our 2015 coho fry all 37,000 of them, weighing in at 1.5 grams. A far cry from the released smolts at 18 grams! There is more work in store this summer on the streams. It will be a busy couple of months starting with fibre glassing two raceways at the hatchery, an upgrade to our river water intake in Rosewall Creek with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) taking the lead, an upgrade to the Wilfred side channel bridge with help from Island Timberlands and Fortis BC. DFO is taking the lead again on an upgrade to the intake at Wilfred Creek and finally instream work to be done on Hart Creek in Union Bay partnering with the Union Bay Community Club. Now that is a busy summer!! AGM is on Thursday May 12th, 7 pm at the Rosewall Hatchery, everyone is welcome!! If you missed The River Never Sleeps Festival and would like to help or see what is happening at the hatchery, our hours of operation are Wednesdays and Saturdays 9 am to 12 pm, Rosewall Creek on Berray Road. What a special place, and what great people live here. Thank you to all of you who warmly invited me to meet with you so that I could write about you for the Fanny Bay Flyer. How you arrived here, how you like it here, and what your plans are were always very interesting to hear. Many of you who have recently moved here were not featured this time, so there will be many new stories to tell in the months ahead! We will continue to highlight community members in the Flyer, but for the next few months we will focus on volunteers, and long time residents of Fanny Bay. I would love to hear about those who volunteer in our community, as well as long time residents who would be willing to share their story with us. Thank you as well for your positive comments about "Who's New in our Community".
