Matthew 24
Introduction:
This chapter is part of the final of Jesus’ five discourses in Matthew, and is referred to
as the Olivet Discourse (Matt. 24–25). It focuses on the details of the coming judgment
on the Messiah’s opponents and Christ’s return. Here Jesus gives his disciples a
glimpse of the end of the age. Jesus commands his followers to be ever ready for his
return—a strong motivation to remain faithful and obedient to his Word.
Dwight D. Eisenhower once said; “In preparing for battle I have always found that
plans are useless, but planning is indispensable.”
In answering the disciples’ questions (24:3), Jesus downplayed the future in favor of a
focus on the present (although he certainly acknowledged that an accurate view of the
future is important). But many students of this discourse take exactly the opposite
course—following their fascination with the future while ignoring their present conduct.
Let’s take an overview of Matthew 24 and look at it from the perspective of
Chapter 25 for it’s application:
• Verses 1-2 The prediction of Roman persecution of Israel, Christ followers and the
destruction of the temple in AD.
