Unit 6, Section 4
What does a chemical reaction tell you?
Measuring Stuff
• We use different values to measure things:
• 12 eggs = 1 DOZEN
• 13 donuts = BAKER’S DOZEN
• A MOLE is another way to measure a large quantity of something

What is a mole?
• Mole: (mol)  amount of a substance that contains
as many atoms as there are in exactly 12 g of carbon12
• Basically a way to measure really small things
• Avogadro’s Number: 6.022 x 1023 is the number of
particles/atoms in a mole
• 1 mole O2 = 6.022 x 1023 atoms O2
• 1 mole HCl = 6.022 x 1023 atoms HCl

Quantitative Relationship
Mole Ratio
C6H12O6 + 6 O2  6 CO2 + 6 H2O
• What is the mole ratio of the substances in this equation?
• 1 mole C6H12O6 : 6 mole O2 : 6 mole CO2 : 6 mole H2O
• 1:6:6:6
Balanced equations give you the MOLE RATIO of the
substances in that equation
Mole Ratio: ratio of each reactant and product in a
chemical reaction (in balanced equation)
Mole Ratio: 2 mol H2 : 1 mol O2 : 2 mol H2O

Quantitative Relationship
Use the MOLE RATIO!!!
C6H12O6 + 6 O2  6 CO2 + 6 H2O
How many moles of CO2 can be produced from 3 moles of
C6H12O6?
3 mol C6H12O6 x 6 mol CO2 = 18 mol CO2
1 mol C6H12O6
Quantitative Relationship
C6H12O6 + 6 O2  6 CO2 + 6 H2O
Calculate the number of moles of H2O produced by 0.42
mol C6H12O6 during cellular respiration.
0.42 mol C6H12O6 x 6 mol H2O
1 mol C6H12O6
= 2.52 mol H2O
