STANBOROUGH PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHES
INTERNET SAFETY
1
During the week of 6 February 2017, the pupils of
Stanborough Primary School participated in an Internet
Safety Week, organised by Deputy Head and Computing
Leader Mrs Madden. Mrs Madden has appointed and trained
ten children to be Digital Leaders across the school and these
children led out in the various activities which included
poster design, drama performances (videoed) and poetry
writing. The workshop idea emerged from the facilitation of
pupil voice, at the previous year's event evaluation.
Integral to internet safety is an understanding of the SMART
rules which are well embedded within the school and in the
minds of the children, as the rules are revisited from year to
year. They warn against giving out personal information online,
promote the involvement of parents/carers in all online
communication, give caution to accepting e-mails, messages or
pictures from unknown sources as they can contain viruses or unwanted messages and explain
that not all information is reliable and that individuals can misrepresent the truth about who
they are.
They also encourage children to tell their parents, carers or a trusted adult if anything makes
them feel uncomfortable or if they or someone they know is a victim of cyber-bullying. "The
children were clearly able to demonstrate how to stay safe online and what to do if they
received a request from a stranger" said Mrs Madden. Adam in Y6 said "I widened my
knowledge on internet safety a bit more, in terms of why we should take care when posting
images online. The group work also required me to think more
deeply about the importance of staying safe online and the best
way to share this information with others."
As well as learning about internet safety, the children are ever
conscious of the school values which underpin school life and
identified that they had used: independence, respect, cooperation, self-control, excellence and resilience during their
internet safety week.
In addition, leadership skills were further developed as the Digital Leaders rose to their tasks
admirably, for example Lincoln, we are told, was extremely organised and a great team leader
in managing to get the best out of his group. Our Adventist schools continue to prepare our
children well to be the leaders of tomorrow, to be people of integrity who also have the
necessary skills to navigate their way safely, through modern-day challenges. We accept the
timely reminder and the resounding message from the children of Stanborough Primary School:
Stay Safe and be SMART online!

BRISTOL CHURCHES UNITE IN CHURCH GROWTH
TRAINING
On Sabbath 11 February, the three churches of the
Bristol District, came together to worship at a
special District Day of Fellowship and Training.
The speaker was Dr Balvin Braham, a pastor who
serves at the Inter-American Division as Field
Secretary and Assistant to the President, for
Evangelism and Leadership Development.
Dr Braham, together with his wife Anett, had made
a special stopover in Bristol on his journey around
Europe, at the request of close friend and pastor of
the Bristol District, Pastor Royston Smith.
In the morning, Dr Braham whose expertise in training churches
in Church Growth and Evangelism, is much sought after,
outlined his strategic focus for the day, around the five stages of
being 'Transformed by His Grace'.
· Spiritual Connectedness – only as we connect to Christ, can
we be truly transformed
· Equipped for Service – we need to recognise the importance
of training, suitable to people's talents and interests
· Social Ministries – we need to build relationships with
individuals first, showing them genuine love and care,
addressing their spiritual as well as physical needs
· Soul Winning – everyone has a role to play in reaching
someone
· Discipleship – the importance of discipleship in terms of devotion, evangelism, fellowship,
outreach and stewardship
In the afternoon, he elaborated on each of these stages, as he challenged the three Bristol
District churches. Pastor Smith also announced the launch of the 'Operation Upgrade'
programme for the Bristol churches, which is a strategic initiative to develop the spiritual life of
all individuals and churches to be transformed by living a life renewed by Jesus Christ (Romans
12:2), in line with the General Conference objective of Total Member Involvement.
3
Dr Braham in his presentation said "an upgrade is something that is better, new and improved,
something we desire, and we are all in need of a spiritual upgrade. A natural result of which,
would then be to influence others to accept Jesus and become His disciples."
Dr Braham then challenged the church to ask itself the question, "are we a church IN the
community, TO the community, or WITH the community?" He explained that too often we
have separated ourselves and not engaged with our neighbourhood and community, or we have
assumed we know what their needs are and have tried to deliver without consultation or
knowledge.
The day was summed up by the need to be transformed:
1. By our relationship with Christ
2. By discerning Christ's righteousness
3. By participating actively in Mission
Speaking after the training, Pastor Smith said "It was a beautiful and spiritual day. Members felt
the urge and need to reconnect with God, themselves and their communities ‒ a sense of total
involvement. Personally, I see this as the catalyst for change in all three churches. I was blessed
and look forward to growth in all aspects of our lives."

TED REQUEST GC TO APPROVE SINGLE
MINISTERIAL CREDENTIAL
The Executive Committee of the Trans-European
Division of Seventh-day Adventists met on 15
February 2017 and voted a strong request to the
General Conference that consideration be given to
issuing a single credential for those in ministry, or
to alternately amend existing credentials making
them more inclusive.
The request, voted unanimously, comes after months of careful consultation, listening, advice
seeking, and prayer; all within the context of the very complex and challenging situation the
Church finds itself facing in secularised Europe.
The preamble to the request includes a commitment to respecting and upholding decisions made
by the General Conference in Session alongside a recognition that decisions made at the highest
level need to be implemented within a local context.
4
The decision in San Antonio generated many
discussions within the Trans-European Division
territory and raised issues of conscience. This has
given rise to unintended and, at times, undesirable
consequences. This includes, but is not limited to,
women pastors and women elders being told by wellintentioned members that they may no longer speak in
church. Since then the TED and local Unions have
spent considerable time affirming women in ministry
and their
God-given calling. [See links at end of article]
While steps have been taken to follow the model of the Jerusalem Council (Acts 15), there was
a strong emphasis by the committee that the Church must continue to strive towards an
understanding of how issues of conscience and faithfulness may be resolved.
For the TED that context includes differing interpretations of equal opportunities legislation in
several countries, together with some issues of variance within Church governance and policy
documents. Legal opinions received by four Unions, based on national and European Union
law, present a challenging picture.
The aim of the committee is to work closely with the GC to find a solution that will both fit
within the needs of national legislation and resolve those variance issues. Within that remit the
committee also requested Unions within the TED to put on hold any variation to working policy
in regard to credentials while discussions are in progress up until the time of the GC Annual
Council.
The voted document states:
Recognising that the current system of ministerial credentials (ordained) and commissioned
credentials function for most of the Church, and wanting to respect the decision made by the
General Conference in Session in San Antonio, we would request that consideration be given
to:
A single ministerial credential which is issued to all who are engaged in pastoral ministry, so
bringing Working Policy in line with Fundamental Belief 14. This would entail amending
Working Policy by deleting the parenthesis and footnote to BA 60 10 and/or amending/deleting
E 60 to reflect a single credential.
Audrey Andersson, TED Executive Secretary
explained that, "this is within policy. We cannot
create a new credential ourselves, but we can
recommend to the GC."
There are also alternative options for the GC to
consider including enhancing the role of a
commissioned minister or developing a new,
gender-neutral credential. The recommendation is
5
not proscriptive but, according to Raafat Kamal, TED President, "it opens the door for positive
dialogue and solutions."
The TED has a long history of valuing all who are called to ministry. This latest request
combines that context with the pragmatic needs of various Unions within the TED while
keeping in harmony with the voted decisions of the World Church.

PROPOSED NEW MEASURES GRANTED TO OFSTED:
EFFECT ON SDA ACTIVITIES, CHILDREN, AND
CHURCHES
Following on from the Government's consultation on extremism, the definition of out-of-school
education settings now appears to include the Sabbath School division of our Church ‒ children
and youth: 19-years-old and under including Pathfinders, clubs, and home schooling etc. The
Government intends to register them and thus be subject to risk-based inspection by Ofsted.
This approach among other reasons is to tackle extremism 'in all its forms' and seek to curb
undesirable teaching which undermine fundamental British values.
Dr Brighton Kavaloh, SEC Religious Liberty director in response to this consultation is inviting
all interested members to attend a seminar geared towards how we as a Church approach this
and get our voice heard. The seminar will be held on Sunday 5 March 2017, 10:00 am at The
Advent Centre, 37 Brendon St, London W1H 5JE.
In responding to this new procedure Dr Kavaloh said, "what if certain values contradict with
what we deem as fundamental biblical values? It is important that we too respond to the
Government clearly, constructively and in measured terms in the next consultation process. Let
us as Seventh-day Adventist Church leaders and members seize this as an opportunity to
witness for Jesus Christ and what we stand for."
Indications so far are that the consultation may be repeated by the Government before the
Counter-Extremism and Safeguarding Bill is enacted by Parliament into law.
6
The seminar is geared towards how we as a Church approach this and get our voice heard.
Apparently, we did not respond in the first consultation.

FINAL CALL PRODUCTIONS – AND THERE WAS
WAR
The last performance of And There Was War, took place last Saturday
evening 18 February at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre, in Tottenham.
Such was the positive response on the night with a swelling demand
for further performances, that this play will no doubt be performed
again in the future. Depicting the 'mystery of iniquity' that took place
in heaven, the play sought to bring the viewer behind the scenes of this
great controversy. With maximum audience capacity, the atmosphere
was alive with awe and suspense as the characters portrayed with
intense emotion, a story so familiar
with most Christians yet presented in
such a way that held the audience
spellbound from beginning to end.
With the fall of Lucifer the play went
through relevant scenes described in scripture that highlighted
the consequences of man's fall and of sin. Though these scenes
were based on familiar scriptural events, the acting and storyline
created a much deeper insight, taking their viewers 'behind the scenes' to experience the
dynamics between good and evil. Stunning performances
were given by Lloyd Reid, playing Lucifer and Thomas
Ababio, playing Immanuel, that through their onstage
performances they created an interplay of tension and
intrigue.
Pastor Emmanuel Osei SEC Acting President who was in
attendance for the performance, said afterwards, "I was
very impressed by the level of professionalism that
attended the whole evening. The production was
excellent, gripping and awesome.
"The cast put their energy and effort into every part they played. I was really proud of them."
Jermaine Wong, producer, writer and creator of Final Call Productionssays "We are passionate
about theatre and use this medium to awaken the God-given potential that rests within every
human being. We train, develop and support not only the next generation of theatre practitioners
7
but also provide a network community of Christian poets,
actors and writers. We use storytelling to reflect and highlight
issues that affect our society today, and raise awareness of the
importance of personally knowing God and standing for
Jesus."

upcoming performances, please visit their website here.

PATHFINDER TRAINING IN NEWCASTLE
Pathfinder leaders, from both Newcastle and South
Shields, took their level 1 Pathfindering training
over the second weekend of February in the
Newcastle church.
The trainers, Simon and Hyacinth Facey, both of
whom are Area co-ordinators, took the local leaders
through many skill areas in order to help the
children enjoy the camp whilst training safely and
enjoyably. The 14 candidates spent the weekend learning basic Risk Assessments for camping,
the kind of equipment needed for a camp, as well as some of the more basic skills needed to
train children and young adults.
One module taught was based upon different learning styles.
Trainees were taught that the acronym VARK stands for Visual,
Aural, Read/write, and Kinaesthetic sensory. The lesson being that
some people learn by doing, others by reading or writing, while
others learn best visually or audibly. The main learning outcome for
the students, was that new Pathfinder leaders need to adapt teaching
styles for different learners.
In previous years Pathfinders were simply trusted that learning had
taken root when new skills were being taught. Today evidence is
needed to show that the trainees have truly understood what they
have learned. At the end of the morning's training, before lunch, the
trainees all took a simple exam.
The next stage for some is Master Guide training. While others will
move one step above to the Pathfinder leader award others like Tate and Hans will wait a little
for the Master Guide training but will apply their skills as they lead in their respective groups.
8
Dr Ed Chan and Manuel Vieira, along with Jessie Pairman will take their skills back to South
Shields and work with their young charges.
