The Hawk
Carnival Night! By Evan Cole, Emily Dick and Cody Ricko
At this year’s Carnival Night, over 350
kids attended! That
is more than the 200
kids from last year.
We asked Mrs. Cole
who organized this
event why we have
Carnival Night. She
said, “ There is a
family fun night every year and we want
something fun for all
ages, plus we want
something at our
school”. Some
games at carnival
night were: football
throw, frog jumper,
skee ball, piggy races, and lots of other
really fun
games.There were a
lot of fun prizes
too,like pie in the

books,lunch with

and a Dairy Queen
coupon. The teachers that got pie in
the face were
Mr.Graf,
Mrs.Gehman,
Mrs.Alderfer, and
Mr. Gross. There
was a photo booth.
At the photo booth,
the theme was a

Two peer mediators will

Winter Snow Day
Do you ever get bored of
playing in the snow, or are you getting too cold sledding down the
hill? Well here are some ideas of
what you can do if you get bored
on a snow day.
The first idea is you might want to
make a fort with friends and maybe
siblings. Then have a snowball
fight with socks.
Next idea is you can make hot
chocolate to warm you up inside
and maybe watch a movie with
your hot chocolate and marshmallow.
Here’s another fun idea you can

do when you’re bored- you can
paint a picture of your front yard
with the white snow.
Do you love creative ideas? If
you do, this is the one for you.
What you do is you can make
snowflakes from paper and hang
them somewhere in your house.
I know one idea that you will definitely want to do. You can make
really fun slime that you can play
with a lot.
Ok here’s another one that is really fun. You could have a board
game tournament with siblings or
friends.
Those

ideas you
could do on
a snow day
if you get
too cold
outside or if
you get
bored.
Math Olympiads! By Emily Rychlak
Every time this group meets, there are
snacks brought in after a long day at
school. You get a paper to work on (timed
for around ten minutes) and your score
competes nationally against others!
Do you love math?
If you do, maybe you have a chance of
getting into Math Olympiads! In this
group, you have chances at doing more
challenging and complicated math!
The teachers who teach this group are
Mrs.Zanine and Mr.Guengerich. Once a
month this group meets after school, and
only fifth graders are chosen to participate.
You don’t have to participate if asked,
though.
Spirit, Vernfield’s Mascot!
Do you want to know about the mascot, the Vernfield Hawk? Here are
some cool facts about the Vernfield
Hawk we learned from our principal,
Mr. Graf.
Our mascot is a hawk because when
Vernfield was being built, there were a
lot of hawks and hawks’ nests behind
the school in the woods. Mr. Graf wanted a mascot because a school mascot
creates pride and fun for all the stu-

might consider putting
a poster up in the
lunchroom or, even a
carpet with Spirit’s
picture so we can see

Lunchroom Rules By: Olivia Rittenhouse, Kristen Gaerthe,
and Makaela Hunter
When you walk into the lunchroom, would you want it to be quiet? The answer to that is coming
ahead. As you know, Mr. Graf put
up a poster of the lunchroom rules.
He did it for a reason. He did it so
that the lunchroom would be a quieter, cleaner place and so that Mr.
Beer doesn’t have to do the majority of the work. We don’t want the
lunchroom to be a boring place, but
a place in the building where everyone can have a good time! If you
be quiet, pick up your trash and
most importantly, follow the cafeteria rules, then we can all have a
better time in the lunchroom!
Clean up after yourself (tables
and floors.)

Spanish Club
By Reese Richardson, Haley Ricko and Avari Schlegal
Spanish club is a new school
activity. It’s held Monday and Fridays at Vernfield. Students who
participate learn colors, names, numbers and games in
Spanish. The students involved in
Spanish club play fun games that
help them learn the Spanish language. One game played is Shoots
and Ladders. Participants must say
the number of steps they have to
move in Spanish. Also,all students
participate in singing songs in
5th Grade Snowman Craft
Once you’re in 5th grade,
you get the opportunity to do a really
fun project called the “snowman
craft”. It is one of the most fun activities you will do all year! I know
what you're thinking, not everybody
can sew, lady! Well, even if you can’t
sew, if you follow Mrs. Gehman and

getting to know the Spanish language. The students are given a
fun assignment to do at home every time they go to the club. At the
end of the year there will be a special celebration of 24 weeks of

Fourth Grade Class Trip
We had a great time during the
4th grade field trip!
We saw the Pennsylvania Capitol
Building, the State Museum, Hershey World, Hershey Factory, and
Milton Hershey’s House.
Creamy, yummy chocolate in our
tummy! After we visited the
Capitol we went on a trolley
tour of Hershey, Pennsylvania. Milton Hershey, who created
the Hershey Chocolate Company,
was married to a woman named
Catherine but he called her Kitty. Kitty met Milton at her candy store. Milton sold his caramel company for $1,000,000 dollars to make chocolate instead.
Milton made brand new houses for
ALL of his employees.
We went home, went to bed, while
visions of chocolates danced in
our heads!!!

Capitol Notes:
The Pennsylvania Capitol in
Harrisburg is where the Governor’s office is located and
where the House, Senate and
Supreme Court meet. This is
where the State laws are made.
An interesting fact about the
Capitol is that it was located
in Philadelphia before it moved
to Harrisburg.
Hershey Notes:
Milton Hershey made the first
milk chocolate Hershey Bar in
1900. Hershey Kisses, Reese’s,
Twizzlers, and Jolly Ranchers
are just a few of the many types
of candy made by Hershey today.
Milton Hershey was not just
interested in making candy. He
was also interested in helping
the community. He created
parks, and built churches
and schools.
Most notably, he started a boarding school for orphaned
boys. This school is now
known as the Milton Hershey School for underprivileged boys and
girls.
Reading Olympics
By Aidan Kearns
Do you like reading? Do you like writing responses?
Do you like competitions? Well, if you like these things, Reading
Olympics is for you!
In this article I will tell you about the Reading Olympic books, the
responses, the meetings, the competition, and the awards. Let’s
begin!
To compete in the Reading Olympic competition, you have to
read books on the Reading Olympics list. They are chosen by a
group of teachers in Montgomery County who vote on good
books to put on the list. They make sure that all the genres are
included on the list so the books are not just one genre that people may not like. Reading the books is important because you
will need to know information about the books to participate in
the competition. Now let’s talk about the responses for the
books.
The responses for the books are just as important as reading the
books. You are supposed to fill them out so you know key events
in each book. At the competition, they might ask you a question
about one of those key events in a certain book. You probably
will know the answer to the question because you remember the
answer from your response. You can also make up questions
about the book that might be questions during the competition.
Then you can share them with your team so they know the answer to that question. Now let’s move on to Reading Olympics
Meetings.
At Reading Olympic meetings, you will get the chance to practice
with your group for the competition. Meetings may include practicing questions, sharing responses, and even reading one of the
Reading Olympic books. In addition, you will have the chance to
check out Reading Olympics books in the library, which you can’t
find in a lot of other places. You will also be able to cross out
books you read on a big chart kept in the library. Your group can
use the chart to find out which books your group needs to read
so that at least one person has read each book on the list. Now,
on to the competition!
The Reading Olympics competition takes place at Souderton
High School with teams from the North Penn district and the
Souderton district. There are three rounds and each team plays
a different team each round. The way each round works is that
one team is asked a question and if the question is answered by
that team in thirty seconds, then they get a point. If they don’t
answer the question in time, the other team has a chance to
answer the question and get the point. After the three rounds are
completed, the competition is over. Now let’s talk about the
awards.
The award your team gets depends on how many questions your
team got right. For example, if your team got 50-60 questions
you get a blue ribbon, 40-49 questions right, you would get a red
ribbon, 30-39 questions for a green ribbon, and 20-29 questions
for a yellow ribbon.
I hope you enjoyed learning about Reading Olympics! If you
want to, you can join next year and have a fun time reading
books with friends.

Snowman Project ….Continued from page 3
laugh, talk, and work together to create an
amazing snowman! To get started you will first need to
stitch around the outside of the fabric in a circle, without poking yourself too much! Next pull the fabric together and put the stuffing inside. You will do this for
all 3 pieces of fabric. Each one will be smaller than the
other. These will then be sewn together and the largest
on the bottom and the smallest on top. Now you have the
body of your snowman. Next, you will go to the hot glue
station, and get your face and buttons glued on. And last
but not least you will place your sock on as a hat and add
a colorful scarf! And ta-da! Your snowman has now been
brought to life, and now just needs a nice, cozy home.
But don’t place him to close to the fireplace, because he
may melt!!!!
