MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Alumnae, Parents and Friends,
I am happy to present to you the Annual Report of Beaumont School, the eighth in my time
as President. As you will see, Beaumont continues to move forward in the accomplishment
of its all-important mission of preparing young women for life, leadership and service.
In our world today, from individual life through social contacts, to the business world and on
to international relations, there is an emphasis on transparency. This is well and good, as we
make better decisions the more clear a picture we have of the situations we face. This report
aims to give you the clearest possible picture of Beaumont’s financial situation today. It also
presents a thumbnail sketch of the events of the past year in the lives of our students, who
are the center of Beaumont’s mission.
As you review this report, keep in mind two considerations:
First, we are in the final stages of the largest capital campaign in Beaumont’s history, the
Advancing Excellence Campaign, and we are eagerly anticipating the opening of our new
STEM building in January. The new educational opportunities that this STEM facility (Science,
Technology, Engineering and Math) will present to our girls are limitless. Beaumont will be
on the cutting edge of future developments and opportunities in these critical fields. At the
same time this new initiative will enable us to continue to provide our girls with critical
thinking skills, the ability to problem solve effectively and to work collaboratively.
Second, to reach the heart of this report, you have to look at the faces behind the figures.
That heart is found in the members of our faculty and staff, our alumnae, friends and
benefactors, our parents, and most importantly, the young women who make up our student
body. Together these people are the real life blood of Beaumont School. This Annual Report is
a tribute and a thank you to each one of these individuals.
Sister Gretchen Rodenfels, OSU, with Beaumont alumna Dionne Broadus ’90
at the Celebrate Summer event in Beaumont’s Courtyard.
We thank all of you who have assisted us in our capital campaign, our annual fund, our
scholarship efforts, and countless other ways. It is not too late to put your face in this
picture of Beaumont!
Gratefully in St. Angela,
Sister Gretchen Rodenfels, OSU ‘65

Building the Future of Beaumont School
Ana Maria Vargas ’15 and Marija Rowane ’14 –
A.M. Higley Company summer interns
The summer was a busy one at Beaumont School. Construction crews
working on the new academic building made up for time that was lost
with a tough winter, and caught up to their original timeline. The new
building will open for student use in January of 2015.
The new learning environment, which will primarily house science,
technology, engineering and math (STEM) classrooms, has been
designed to create a “live” learning space—a place where students are
able to learn through traditional lectures, expanded hands-on learning
opportunities, increased access to technology, and more collaborative
learning situations. We are, essentially, creating the modern classroom
that empowers our students to use different tools to improve their
learning. The skills that they will gain through this learning environment
can easily translate to any career they ultimately choose.

2013-2014 ANNUAL REPORT
5
Remember that these new classrooms are replacing those that were built over fifty years ago,
when technology and STEM were in their infancy. When we surveyed our alumnae, parents and
friends, the science classrooms came up most often as one of the greatest needs of the school. It
is truly essential that we update these classrooms now in order to stay relevant to young women
in education, as more and more schools are emphasizing these subject areas, especially with girls.
Nationally, we need to prepare our young women better in STEM subjects, and Beaumont is taking a
proactive approach so that our girls maintain the tradition of an exceptional education. We are truly
committed to preparing our young women for life, leadership and service and preparing them for
tomorrow’s world.

Rendering of the Student Commons
The Advancing Excellence Capital Campaign to build this new learning
space has raised $7.2 million toward its $9.5 million goal. While this is a
tremendous milestone, being the most that Beaumont has raised in its
history, we still have a long way to go to successfully meet our goal. We
are asking that you help us in reaching this goal. The gifts you make to
this campaign will not only demonstrate your commitment to Beaumont, Science • Technology • Engineering • Math
it will also demonstrate your commitment to the future of Beaumont
School. Your gift, at any level, will provide the future for generations to come. We welcome gifts to
be paid over five years. Gifts at all levels are appreciated and truly make a difference.

ARTS
Beaumont’s long tradition in the arts continued through the
2013-2014 school year. Students who study the fine arts at
Beaumont have the opportunity to work through composition,
drawing, sculpture, painting, printmaking, oils, and more.
From Introduction to Studio Art to the annual Fine Arts Review,
all Beaumont students can explore the fine arts as a way to
explore their own creativity with our outstanding art teachers.
At the end of the school year, a new art gallery wall was
created near Beaumont’s main entrance in the foyer to display
student artwork proudly and to greet visitors.

When it comes to music, Voices of Harmony and girls in the
Tri-M Society are called upon throughout the year to perform at
liturgies, special events, and volunteer their talents for alumnae,
grandparents and parents and friends through concerts both
formal and fun.
With two full-play productions and a student-directed OneAct Festival, girls drawn to the dramatic arts are immersed in
theater, dance, stagecraft, and the astonishing collaboration
needed to bring something from the page to the stage.

PARAPET CLUB, continued
Members of Team Alexander the Great pause for a quick photo
as they prepare for national competition in May 2014
Students learning the art of dissection from Comparative
Anatomy teacher, Lynn Gadus
Beaumont students Ana Maria Vargas
’15; Molly Cogan ’15; Crista Kieley ’17 and
Mary Martin ’16, aboard the tall ship Denis
Sullivan as members of Project YESS
Science
We continually invest in building the Beaumont
community for the future. Last September, we broke
ground on a new $9.5 million STEM (science, technology,
engineering, math) building that will revolutionize the
way students will learn in the sciences.
Outside of Beaumont’s STEM curriculum, students excel
in completions and clubs focused in the sciences. During
summer 2014, four Beaumont students and one alumna
took part in Project YESS, a program sponsored by the
Cleveland Rotary that builds confidence and leadership
in high schoolers through a week long adventure aboard
a tall ship sailing the Great Lakes. For the third year in
a row, students took part in the RoboBot competition,
where they competed against local schools and were one
of the few all-girl teams.

Athletics
Beaumont Athletics seeks to foster regionally
competitive interscholastic sports programs
that attracts, nurtures, and graduates
student athletes who demonstrate integrity
and character while pursuing excellence in
their respective sports. Although winning is
important, it is equally important that we
are fostering young women who are good
teammates both on and off the playing field.
Beaumont’s 12 sport teams continued to shine
among the competition during the 2013-2014
school year, with three sports making it to
state championships. The golf, volleyball and
track teams represented Beaumont at the state
level, with our volleyball team making it all the
way to the final four. All Blue Streak teams
demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship no
matter the sport or score.

The Importance of a Beaumont
Education - Then and Now
I was in the eighth grade and looked forward to following in my sister’s footsteps
and attending Beaumont School. However, my Dad became ill — stricken with
early onset Alzheimer’s — resulting in finances being an issue. I had my heart set
on going to Beaumont and decided I would find a way.
I had been babysitting since I was 12 years old and believed I could make enough
to pay the tuition, buy a uniform etc. At the rate of a $1 an hour, I worked most
days after school and every weekend. Annual tuition at that time was $400 for
freshman year and $600 for sophomore year.
It was difficult, but I was able to pay for my first two years of tuition at Beaumont.
Then, tuition increased to $800 a year. At age 16, I was babysitting and waitressing,
already struggling to make the payments. I did not know what to do. My mother
was not comfortable about asking for help from the school. But there was no way
I was leaving Beaumont!
I believe God gave me the strength to request a meeting with Sister Claudia Klyn,
Beaumont’s Principal. Very tearfully, I recounted our family situation. She was very
kind and reduced my tuition to $400 for my junior and senior years. To offset the
tuition discount, Sister Claudia entrusted me with a part-time summer job. I was in
charge of the lockers and had the task of checking each combination and assigning
one to each student. There were no computers at this time; consequently, the
records were kept with manual entries into a giant ledger book. I continued to
babysit and waitress throughout my senior year. I never told anyone.
I was blessed to receive a Beaumont education! This is the secret I kept for so
many years and recently shared with my classmates when we celebrated our
40th reunion this past June at Beaumont School.
In gratitude to Beaumont for the tuition break and because my education has
meant so much to me, I try to give back when I can, supporting the school
financially to the best of my ability. It is my way of saying thank you for all I
received from Beaumont. It meant and means the world to me to have been able
to graduate with my classmates and remain close to the members of the
Beaumont Class of 1974.
Sincerely,
Wendy Spoeneman Lally, Beaumont Class of 1974

Although all Beaumont students are required to
complete 80 hours of service before graduation,
the majority of our girls go above and beyond
the requirements by immersing themselves in a
newfound ministry. From the annual All School
Service day in September to Christmas on Campus,
students work around the school year to complete
service projects and help those in need. Beaumont
students reach out to children, the elderly, the dying,
the hungry, the needy. The class of 2014 completed
11,350 service hours in their four years at Beaumont,
greatly exceeding their minimum amount of hours,
which totaled 7,760. At Beaumont, our students
truly take to heart our motto of life, leadership and
service, choosing to embrace Catholic ministry in
their daily lives.

DONORS BRING NEW NAMES TO BEAUMONT GEMS
Beaumont School has been the recipient of significant donations from generous
supporters to the Advancing Excellence Campaign. These gifts have made an
impact on many different areas of Beaumont’s 21 acre school campus.
The Lennon
House,
named for
Edward and
Catherine
Lennon
Lozick ’63
Beaumont’s original school building was a 65 room mansion, a six car garage,
trophy room, aviary and staff living quarters. It was purchased from the Painter
Family in 1942 in Cleveland Heights. This mansion was renamed The Lennon
House, in gratitude to Edward and Catherine Lennon Lozick ’63 for their lead
support of the campaign with a $1 million challenge grant, and Cathey’s
support as an Honorary Chair of the Advancing Excellence Campaign.
The mansion’s parlor has been named The Agnes Gaertner ’25 and Norman F.
Diederich Parlor—a gift from their daughters, Anne Marie, OSU ’61; Mary D.
Ott ’61; and Carolyn D. Wohlgemuth ‘66.
The
Margaret S.
and Murlan
J. Murphy
Board Room
The former chapel has been named The Margaret S. and Murlan J. Murphy
Board Room—in honor of the Murphy’s far reaching and generous support
of Beaumont School as caring parents and grandparents.
The former library has been named The Mooney Meeting Room in honor of
Carol Fruedenberger Mooney ’52 in honor of her long standing legacy at
Beaumont School as an alumna, parent and grandparent.
Beaumont is honored to share the rich legacy of so many cherished supporters
with our current and future students and their families as we continue to
educate young women in the Ursuline tradition for life, leadership and service.

reunion weekend 2014
2014 was the year that the Beaumont classes ending in “4”
and “9” celebrated their class reunions with style back at their
alma mater. Friday night was the gathering for Beaumont
alumnae in the foyer of the school with hors d’oeuvres,
where alumnae caught up with former classmates and
new connections from both near and far. On Saturday, the
afternoon kicked off with a special liturgy in the St. Angela
Merici Chapel, followed by a picnic dinner and dessert in the
original school building, the Lennon House.

alumnae gathering
Beaumont is proud of its rich legacy of alumnae who stay
connected to their alma mater and classmates, as well as the
continuing support they give as women who exemplify the
Beaumont traditions of life, leadership and service.
