After two seasons on the doorstep, Spartans have sights set on returning to NCAA Tournament

for the Spartans and has 10 career points.
the team lead with four assists.
Michigan State men’s soccer head coach Joe Baum said the ingrediants
were there for the team in 2006. Then, injuries came, with Ryan Dick, Kevin Reimann, Karl Trost and John Folino all fighting injuries throughout the year. Not
to mention the loss of two-year starting defender Greg Doster before the year
even began. By the last weekend of the season, while Ohio State could turn to a
well of 16 players, Michigan State had only 14 players ready to go.
In the end, it was that lack of depth that cost the Spartans a shot at the
NCAA Tournament after a 10-7-2 season, the Spartans’ seventh straight winning
campaign, that included one of the biggest upsets in school history, a 1-0 win
over third-ranked New Mexico in the second week of the season.
“I really think what is going to happen this fall is that we have a nice nucleus returning,” Baum said. “We’ve had a really great recruiting class, plus last year,
we redshirted five players, so we have 10 new players heading into the program
that can possibly play. What happened last year was that when Ryan Dick and
Greg Doster were hurt, we were too thin at the end of the year. You could just see
us start to wear down. That’s just not a healthy situation. What I am hoping is that
this year, we’ll have 16 or 17 people that can jump in there and be competitive.
That will put us back in a position where we don’t have to ask guys to play 90
minutes when they should only be playing 75.”
Not only will the team have depth, it will also be experienced, with eight
starters and 13 letterwinners returning to the pitch at Old College Field.
“I think what is going to happen is that sometimes with younger teams
that if you get in a suituation of adversity, I find sometimes younger players start
pressing or trying to hard,” Baum said. “That’s not the answer. The answer is to
stay within yourself and continue to work hard. I think these older players understand that.”
FORWARDS
Joe Baum on the forwards: “Kenzo Webster and Doug DeMartin will be the two
strikers. Louis Stephens III will be our top reserve. Louis has really made some progress. We hope to split those minutes amongst those guys and always have somebody
with fresh legs in there.
“We feel like we can create chances in our system. We have hard-working midfielders. We release backs. You need somebody to put those chances away. When
Kenzo and Doug were first-year starters, I’d say they did OK. Last year, Kenzo really
started to blossom and this spring, Doug really came along. Now, we think they’ve
been in this role for a couple years. We think they are going to start finishing these
chances as more experienced players.”
Senior co-captain Kenzo Webster burst onto the national scene early last
season when he scored the game-winning goal against New Mexico in the first
round of the MSU/Radisson Fall Classic. He added three goals the next week, one
in a 1-0 win over nationally-ranked Virginia Commonwealth and two in a 2-0 win
over Butler. In all, Webster broke out to the tune of seven goals and an assist to
lead the Spartans with 15 points. For his efforts, he was named to the Top Drawer
Soccer.com Team of the Season Fourth Team.

Junior Doug DeMartin will enter his third season as a starting striker for
the Spartans, having racked up 24 career points on nine goals and six assists. As
a freshman, he tied for the team lead with seven goals, including two game-winning goals. He posted two goals and had three assists as a sophomore.
Junior Louis Stephens III will be the team’s primary reserve in the attack
having scored two goals in 2006, including the game-winner against UC Riverside in overtime. Stephens has three goals and an assist in his career.
MIDFIELDERS
Joe Baum on the midfielders: “The way it projected in the spring was that Kevin
Reiman started at attack midfielder, Zac Scaffidi played defensive mid right behind
him and Ben Pirmann and Ryan Dick started at the wide midfield positions. They all
played very well this spring.
“Zac Sacaffidi had played more as a forward or an attacker and now he’s playing defensive mid. He was great there. That’s a great role for him. He covers a lot of
ground, has great fitness, great pace.
“I think Kevin Reiman really found himself this spring. When he transferred to
us from Maryland, he was hurt in the preseason. He missed the first four regular season games and he really started finding himself towards the end of the year and the
season was over. I think if Reiman can stay healthy, he will be effective.
“Ben Pirmann and Ryan Dick playing wide - those guys have been good for a
couple years, so I think the starting midfield is in pretty good shape.
“We also have some reserve players there. Jeff Ricondo, who we redshirted as
a freshman, played quite well in the spring. Karl Trost had a very good spring. He
played both forward and midfield. We’re going to look for him to be a contributor.
We think between Ricondo, Trost and these incoming freshman that we’re going to
have some depth in the midfield. We’re not going to have to ask four guys to play 90
minutes.”
Senior Kevin Reiman returns for his second season in the Green and White
after transferring from national champion Maryland after his sophomore year. A
game-changing playmaker as a midfielder, Reiman was riddled with injuries as a
junior, starting just 11 games, but still managed to tie for the team lead with four
assists.
Moving behind him after two seasons as an attack midfielder is junior Zac
Scaffidi. Scaffidi played attack midfield for the Spartans as a sophomore, scoring
two game-winning goals, one in overtime against Sacramento State and one
against Northwestern, and adding two assists. In his career, Scaffidi has three
goals and four assists for 10 points.
Both wide midfielders, seniors Ben Pirmann and Ryan Dick have started in
at least parts of the last two seasons. Pirmann, a three-year starter, tied the team
lead with four assists as a junior, as he started all 19 games. Pirmann has started
29 games as a Spartan and has racked up nine assists in his career. A fierce competitor, Pirmann has a knack for both drawing a foul and changing field position
quickly.

Joe Baum enters his 31st season as head coach
and 34th overall along the sidelines for the Michigan State men’s soccer program. He has been associated with Spartan soccer for
a combined 38 seasons as a player, assistant coach and head coach.
He enters the season 14th among active NCAA head coaches in career victories and is just four wins shy of becoming just the 26th coach in NCAA Division
I history to reach 300 career wins, where he would join Indiana’s legendary Jerry
Yeagley as the only Big Ten coaches to ever reach the mark.
A two-time Big Ten Coach of the Year, Baum has guided the Spartans to an
overall mark of 296-217-48 (.570), which includes 20 winning seasons during his
time overseeing the Green and White. Last season, Baum guided the Spartans
to a 10-6-2 record, including two wins over teams ranked in the nation’s top 25.
On Sept. 1, Baum coached the Spartans to the program’s greatest regular-season
upset in school history, a 1-0 victory against third-ranked and 2005 national runner-up New Mexico.
In 2004, MSU captured its first Big Ten Tournament Championship and a
berth in the NCAA Tournament for the second time in four years, finishing the
season with a 12-7-1 record. The Spartans made a magical run through the conference tournament, shutting out Wisconsin, 1-0, in the first round before shocking defending national champion Indiana, 2-1, in the semifinals. Michigan State
capped the tournament with a 1-0 win over Northwestern in the championship.
In 2001, the Spartans (13-6-1) made their first appearance in the NCAA
Tournament since 1969. The Green and White defeated Butler 2-1 but fell in
round two to Big Ten powerhouse Indiana 1-0. In 2000, Baum led the Spartans to
an 11-6-2 record, including a 4-1-1 Big Ten mark, good for a second-place finish.
The four conference wins were the most in school history and earned Baum his
second Big Ten Coach of the Year honors. In 1996, he led the team to a mark of
12-5-2, which also earned him Big Ten Coach of the Year honors. In 1995, Baum
guided the Green and White booters to a mark of 12-3-3, his highest seasonal
winning percentage (.750) while at MSU and the program’s best mark since
1975.
Baum also helped build MSU women’s program, serving as the program’s
first head coach from 1986-90 and compiling an impressive 69-23-5 (.737) record.
Baum began his coaching career in 1969 at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville
as an assistant to Bob Guelker. From there, he took a similar post at WisconsinGreen Bay from 1972-74.
In 1974, Baum came to Michigan State as an assistant to Ed Rutherford.
Baum held the position for three seasons, helping State post a record of 25-7-3
(.757). He was promoted to the head coaching position in 1977 when Rutherford
stepped down to serve as a full-time administrative assistant to then-Athletics
Director Joe Kearney.
In 30 seasons, Baum has built the Spartan program into a consistent winner. During his tenure, he has coached such Spartan greats as forward Tom
Doherty (34 goals from 1982-85) along with goalkeepers Paul Zimmerman (29
shutouts from 1982-85) and Reid Friedrichs (Big Ten Player of the Year in 1996).
Two players from the 2004 Big Ten Tournament Championship team, Jordan Gruber and John Minagawa-Webster, played professional soccer while Ryan McMahon earned a full-roster contract from the Kansas City Wizards of the MLS in the
spring of 2007. In addition, since the Big Ten Conference’s sponsorship of men’s
soccer in 1991, 34 different players have garnered 50 berths on all-conference
teams.
A three-year soccer letterman at MSU from 1966-68, Baum led the Spartan
booters to a 33-1-7 record, including a 33-game unbeaten streak. He was in goal
for two NCAA co-championship squads and was named to the 1968 All-Midwest
team by the National Soccer Coaches of America. Baum still owns the secondlowest career goals-against average (0.70) in Spartan men’s soccer history.
Baum received his bachelor’s degree in communications from MSU in
1969 and a master’s degree in counseling from Southern Illinois-Edwardsville in
1971.
Baum resides in Okemos and his family includes his wife, Janice, along with
children, Stefan and Kelsey.

2007 Michigan State Men’s Soccer
HISTORY
A Half-Century Of Full-Force Fury
It’s Been A Magical Ride On The Pitch At Old College Field
MICHIGAN STATE CELEBRATED THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF MEN’S SOCCER AT THE UNIVERSITY AGAINST INDIANA ON OCT. 1, 2006. BELOW ARE
PICTURES OF THE ALUMNI WHO RETURNED FOR THE WEEKEND, SEPARATED BY DECADE.
1950S
1990S
1970S
1980S
Can it really be 50 years since Michigan State’s first soccer match - a 3-1 win
over arch-rival Michigan on Oct. 13, 1966, in East Lansing?
Can any program be that much better than the Spartans were from 196468, with two NCAA Co-Championships, two runner-up finishes and a five-year
record of 53-4-9?
Can a team be more resilient than MSU was in 2004, when Joe Baum’s guys
won more conference games in three days than they had all season en route to
a Big Ten title?
Can the future be anything but bright with Hall of Fame leadership, and a
new facility in the works - part of a $6.8 million, three-stadium complex at Old
College Field?
Those questions and more were addressed during the weekend of Oct. 1,
2006 when five decades of Spartan soccer were celebrated before and during a
match with league mega-power Indiana.
The fun all started when Biggie Munn, then MSU Director of Athletics,
asked Gene Kenney, a wrestling guy, to be the school’s first varsity soccer coach.
The wisdom of that choice was obvious to everyone when Kenney’s first
three squads went 5-0-1, 6-0-2 and 8-0 - a combined mark of 19-0-3.
His 14-year record as head coach? Try a sterling 120-13-13. Or to put it another way, the Spartans didn’t lose a Big Ten match until a 1-0 setback at Indiana
in 1974, their 19th season of competition.
After twice finishing second in the nation with 1-0 losses to Navy in 1964
and St. Louis in 1965, Kenney’s players were ready to roll in 1967.
With high-scoring forwards Trevor Harris, Guy Busch and Tony Keyes and a
stingy back line with Baum in goal, MSU finished No. 1 in the polls with a 12-0-2
mark, including a pair of ties with perennial power St. Louis.
“You have to understand the scholarship numbers were different,” Baum
remembered before practice began Tuesday. “We were one of only a few schools
in the whole Midwest, along with St. Louis and Akron, the other powers in the
region, to have those kinds of resources. And we made the most of them.”
Busch scored a then-Spartan-record 54 goals from 1965-67. Keyes erased
that mark with 56 from 1966-68. And Harris, who followed Keyes to campus from
Kingston, Jamaica, had 48 from 1967-69, including a team-best 23 as a sophomore.
Placing those achievements in perspective, Busch, Keyes and Harris combined for 158 goals over a five-year span, though they only played together one
season. It was like a baseball franchise having its top three home run hitters in
history in the same lineup.
“We had a rare combination of speed and skill,” said Keyes, now a pediatric
oral surgeon in Washington, D.C. “And our coach was a very keen student of the
game. We only lost once in three seasons (and went 33-1-7).”
That 4-1 loss came at Akron in 1968, when Keyes set an MSU season record
with 28 goals in 15 matches - six more scores than the Spartans managed last
year in 19 outings (8-6-5).
“I was just a little guy who could play - maybe 5-foot-7 1/2 and 140 pounds
soaking wet,” Keyes said. “I had track scholarships from USC and UCLA as a sprinter. But I liked soccer better. And after Gene and I started corresponding, he de-

cided to take a chance on me without ever seeing me play.”
When you talk about great hunches, that one would qualify. But the team’s
spot-on impersonations of a speed-talking leader, including classics by Busch
and Baum, ended one year later when Kenney stepped down to become the
school’s assistant A.D. for facilities.
His successor was Jamaican trailblazer and MSU pipeline producer Payton
Fuller, who turned Kenney on to Keyes, then went 20-8-9 as the program’s second head coach from 1970-73.
Former Spartan assistant football coach Ed Rutherford was handed control
of MSU soccer in 1974. He went 25-7-3 in three seasons before resigning and telling A.D. Joe Kearney, “It’s time that Joe Baum coaches this team.” Baum has done
that for 30 seasons and was just inducted into the St. Louis Soccer Hall of Fame
on Sept. 21. His Spartan teams are 292-212-47, recording 20-winning seasons,
including the past seven-straight.
“I have to credit George Perles and Ron Mason,” Baum insisted. “We had
zero scholarships in 1990. Then, George called me in and said, `Let’s do it!’ I almost fell out of my chair. But he’d been a coach and knew what it took to compete. He was interested in more than football, basketball and hockey. And being
fully funded has made all the difference. It’s like the old Johnny Carson line: `I’ve
been rich, and I’ve been poor. And I like rich better.’”
MSU struck gold two years ago when it caught fire at just the right time.
After a 1-4-1 skid near the end of the regular season, the Spartans closed with
a 7-1 blowout of Valparaiso, then beat Wisconsin 1-0, shocked host Indiana 2-1
and topped Northwestern 1-0 in the Big Ten Tournament.
“That win at Indiana was the biggest moment of my career,” said forward
Ryan McMahen, who scored both MSU goals against a home-state dynasty that
failed to recruit him, then became his program’s first All-American in 37 years.
“It’s funny to think of what could’ve been if I’d gone to Indiana. But I had the best
four years of my life up there (in East Lansing) with the academics and the ambience. The whole experience was phenomenal.”
McMahen, like former teammate John Minagawa-Webster, plays professionally these days for the Kansas City Wizards in Major League Soccer. But he’s
anxious to see another stadium, the one Baum has been promised by Mason as
part of much-needed upgrade for baseball, softball and soccer - a project spearheaded by ex-Tigers and Dodgers World Series hero Kirk Gibson and current Cardinals pitcher Mark Mulder.
“That’s the final piece of the puzzle,” Baum said with a smile beaming
through his mustache and bushy beard. “Where the sport is in 2006, all the super-successful Division I programs have stadiums. We have a well-maintained
field. But if we want a shot at making the Final Four, we’re kidding ourselves if we
don’t think that facility is important.”
Nothing is more important in establishing tradition than winning with
people who have savored the experience.

WILS radio personality.

This is a very high praise

was a driving force for
the Spartans, helping the
team to an 11-0-3 record
during his two years as
a letterwinner. As a senior in 1957, he was an
honorable mention AllAmerican.
Sarria, known as the
“phantom,” was a twotime All-American. His
first and second team AllAmerican honors were
a testament to the success the Spartans had.
The Phantom’s 31 career
goals are ninth in the
Spartan record books.
His scoring output led
MSU to three undefeated
seasons and 17 consecutive wins which is the most in the history of MSU.
Filizola was named first
team All-American in
1962. He was one of the
Spartans scoring leaders in 1961 and 1962.
He scored three goals in
a 12-0 shutout against
Indiana in 1962, which
head coach Gene Kenney called Filizola’s best
performance ever. He
finished his career with
27 goals, 23 assist and
77 points. His 23 assists are third in the Spartans
record book.
The Spartan halfback
won first-team honors in
1966 and second-team
honors in 1967. He denied many scoring opportunities, leading the
defense to a school record, allowing only six
goals in 12 games. Hens’

TRANSFORMING LIVES.
Michigan State University is defining what it means to be a land-grant university in the 21st century. From
our roots as the nation’s pioneer land-grant institution, we have a long tradition of using the research and
knowledge that is developed here to create practical solutions that make a difference for individuals and
communities. From Michigan to Malawi, MSU continues its proud tradition of advancing knowledge and
transforming lives. A few highlights of our accomplishments are listed here.

LIFE SKILLS PROGRAM
The mission of the Life Skills Program is to provide a
systematic personal development program designed to
reach each student-athlete based on his or her individual needs. The focus of the program is on the individual
as a whole person — academically, athletically and emotionally — and on the changing needs of that individual during
college and in the years after graduation.
MSU implements and expands on the vision of the
CHAMPS/Life Skills Program by using university and community resources to provide student-athletes with the best possible resources.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
& OUTREACH
MULTICULTURAL PROGRAMS
The mission of the Multicultural Programs is to provide studentathletes with cultural and diversity experiences and opportunities to
enhance their professional growth, development and leadership skills.
The program will collaborate with campus resources to elevate the academic success and campus involvement of student-athletes.
LEAP
The goal of the Learning Enhancement & Academic
Program (LEAP) is to provide comprehensive services
for Michigan State University student-athletes. LEAP
houses the entire tutoring program while providing a
wide range of learning services, including learning
strategy, interventions, mentor programming,
context-based tutorials, assistive technology
and structured study experiences.
PACT
The PACT program is an initiative
designed to give student-athletes more
opportunities to interact with the Greater
Lansing community.

CLARA BELL SMITH
ACADEMIC CENTER
Academic, personal, and professional support is essential to college
success. At MSU, Student-Athlete Support Services helps student-athletes
reach their full potential.
Our philosophy is to offer an academic support program that will assist
all student-athletes with the transition to college and integrate with the total
university. This all-encompassing support continues throughout the studentathlete’s collegiate career, until the day he or she receives a diploma, lands
a job, or enters graduate school.
MICHIGAN STATE RANKS THIRD IN THE BIG
TEN AND 14TH NATIONALLY WITH 94 ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICANS.
Academic counseling, career exploration, planning and placement, and
academic assistance through tutorial programs are just some of the ways we
encourage student success.
Being proactive rather than reactive, our staff does not wait for an academic crisis to occur. We gather important background information and build
an academic profile on each student-athlete, assessing his or her needs in advance. We also stay informed on the daily progress of each student-athlete.
Freshmen and transfer student-athletes encounter a major transition
when making the switch from high school or community college to a university. These students, while adjusting to their new routines, receive extra
attention and support.
College is not easy. But with hard work and
dedication from both the student-athlete and the
support staff, the student-athlete can have a
successful college experience.
The Clara Bell Smith Academic Center is
a 31,000-square foot academic facility that
was funded by private donations.
The Clara Bell Smith Academic Center is
named after the mother of Steve Smith, a former
MSU basketball All-American and 14-year NBA
veteran. Smith donated $2.5 million to the $7.5
million facility, the largest gift ever by a professional
athlete to any college or university. X

Nestled between Jenison Field House and the Red Cedar River, Old College Field
is MSU’s oldest athletic facility still in continuous use. Since its purchase in 1900 for
$1,1357.50, Old College Field has been the site of Spartan baseball. Throughout the
years, several teams have enjoyed use of the complex, including the football team,
which competed there from 1902-22. Today, Old College Field is home for the soccer,
softball and baseball teams.
Men’s soccer has enjoyed great success on the banks of the Red Cedar, winning 70
percent of their games at Old College Field, finishing undefeated at home 11 times in
the 51 years of the program. The Spartans have gone 37-16-2 (.691) since 2000 at the
soccer complex and have enjoyed two trips to the NCAA Tournament while playing on
the natural grass surface.
The “New Life For Old College Field” project began in
2006 and was conceived to upgrade Old College Field to a
first-class facility for MSU teams and fans. Seeking to raise
$6.8 million for improvements to all venues at the complex,
the plans include making vital improvements and new construction necessary to bring the facility up to NCAA standards, assist teams in delivering their best performances
and enhance the experience and comfort of fans.
One year into the project, the project has raised almost
$3 million, including a gift of $750,000 from the DeMartin
family of Summitt, N.J. to renovate Old College Field’s soccer stadium. The gift, received by MSU in January, is the
largest ever given to an olympic sport at Michigan State
and will directly support the renovation of the soccer facility. The soccer facility renovations include the construction of new grandstands, bringing the seating capacity to
2,500 and enabling MSU to host conference and national
tournaments. In addition, the site will be reconfigured to
provide for a competitive playing field, along with a new
press box and practice field.
Special donor recognition and memorial opportunities
are still available for major donors to the project. For further information regarding the Old College Field project,
please contact Senior Associate Athletics Director Chuck
Sleeper, Michigan State University, 225 Jenison Field
House, East Lansing, MI 48824; or call, 517-432-4633.
