Unit 4
Activity Name: Making a Change
Skill/Objective (copy in your Passport): Changes in Energy
Benchmark:
SC.B. 1.2.4 Knows the many ways in which energy can be transformed from one
type to another.
SC.B.1.2.6 Knows ways that heat can move from one object to another
LA.B.2.2.1 Writes notes, comments and observations that reflect comprehension
of content and experiences from a variety of media.
LA.B.2.2.6 Creates expository responses in which ideas and details follow an
organizational pattern and are relevant to the purpose.
Directions:
Materials Needed: Activity Sheet, Concept Map, Definition Strips, Word Cards,
Answer Key.
Preparation: Run Definition Strips and Word Cards on cardstock. Put Answer Key
in sheet protector. Introduce how energy changes from one form to another in
whole group lesson prior to independent station work.
Technology:
http://library.thinkquest.org/3042/energy.html Think Quest
includes forms of energy and how they can change from one
to another.
http://www.eia.doe.gov/kids/energyfacts/science/formsofenergy.html
Energy Kid’s page includes: What is energy?, Forms of Energy, Sources of
Energy.
Differentiating the various needs:
•
•
•
Allow students to use textbook or dictionary for Definition Strip and Word
Card matching.
Activities can be done independently, in small groups or as a whole group
activity.
Each station group could become experts as to a form of energy, sharing
with the whole class the information they’ve learned about their energy
form.
