Following the successful completion
of the 4 year MPhys course offered
by the Physics department at
Swansea University, I continued
to study and conduct research
with antimatter which lead to the
award of my doctorate degree in
2010. Having the opportunity to
study under leading researchers,
within the friendly atmosphere of
the Physics department, Swansea
University and the City of Swansea,
not only provided a very enjoyable
9 years but led directly to my current
position as an Associate Professor at
Washington State University, USA,
where I continue to use the skills
and expertise I acquired during my
time at Swansea. Whether someone
is considering a 3 year or 4 year
course, in preparation for industry,
academia or the flexibility offered
by an excellent degree for the future,
I thoroughly recommend Swansea
to anyone with an appetite for
knowledge.

PRACTICAL
SKILLS
The department supports and promotes a Physics at Swansea LinkedIn group for Alumni, students and staff to
have a forum to discuss career opportunities, placements, internships, career pathways and experiences. This is
also a place where recruiters can advertise jobs and new opportunities within both academia and industry.

WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY...
‘Whilst completing my third year Theoretical Physics project at Swansea University, I was
lucky enough to be allowed the opportunity by my supervisor to give a lecture myself on
Quantum Mechanics. This allowed me a brilliant platform to develop my public speaking
skills, and improve my ability to communicate scientific principles to a large group of
people. Lecturing an entire year group of physicists was an exciting prospect and I
thoroughly enjoyed being able to teach people only a few years younger than myself
theories which are at the forefront of our current knowledge of science. This opportunity
really encouraged me to think about the way that science is taught in academic
establishments, and gave me a unique perspective of what it is like to be a lecturer, a
rare kind of experience which not many people have at such a young age! It has really
encouraged me to pursue a career in academia and has given me a valuable perspective
of what the realities of this profession are.’

Studying Physics at Swansea University will give you detailed insight into the fundamental
laws underlying all of Nature – from quantum mechanics, describing quarks ad gluons,
to Einstein’s theory of gravity, relevant for the Universe on cosmological scales. Along
the way you will learn a number of indispensable skills for life, which will make you well
prepared for what comes after graduation.

‘I decided to study a four year
integrated Masters degree in
theoretical physics at Swansea
University after attending an open
day with the very welcoming staff
of the small but close-knit physics
department. After graduating with a
1st, I returned to the department to
extend my studies to Ph.D. level, which
I completed. I thoroughly enjoyed
my time at Swansea University, and
studying within the physics department
was a great & very productive
experience. Due to having studied to
Ph.D. level, I was able to secure a job
as a physicist with Ultra Electronics, a
FTSE 250 company, based in Dorset.
I work on the design, development
& testing of neutron flux detectors
used within the reactor of AGR
nuclear power stations throughout
the UK. The work evaluates materials
and instrumentation in radioactive
environments, which relies heavily on
my Physics training from Swansea.’
‘I chose the course at Swansea because it
was voted best for student life and I loved
the city. It is a reputable course with year
abroad opportunities.
The lecturers were friendly and had an
open door policy, giving advice and
assistance with careers and assessments.
I most enjoyed the year abroad and report
writing. I learnt to manage work with play
and to mix with people from a variety of
different backgrounds and with varying
interests. My degree is the reason I have my
current job.’
