Program Benefits
 Housing

Dorm style room in UCB Unit 1 Residential Hall and campus meal plan, Internet, linen
provided
All participants are required to live in designated housing including Berkeley
undergraduates

Roundtrip airfare is provided to and from the Berkeley campus
Airfares will be booked through UC Berkeley travel services

All expenses paid to attend the 2013 Amgen Symposium held at UCLA

This event includes over 250 scholars from all 10 US Amgen campuses
 Stipend



A $4,000 stipend will be paid and distributed in three monthly installments
( June, July, and August)
August stipend will be received once all program requirements are fulfilled
Stipends will be supplemented for participants receiving other summer research
funding such as MARC, HHMI, or other funding for the summer

 In the lab
 Scholars will work full-time hours or more in the lab each week
 Depending on the progress of your project, evening and weekend hours may be
required
 In meeting program requirements
 Challenge yourself in the lab, submit requirements on time, collaborate with your
lab to complete your abstracts and contents of your presentations, and report
weekly on your progress or challenges in the lab
 Behavior on and off campus

 Scholars are expected to be on their best behavior as participants in the program

Role of Graduate Student
Assistants
 Program Assistants

As an added benefit, UC Berkeley graduate students will be hired to assist you in all
aspects of the program with particular emphasis on the academic and social
components of the program
 Meetings

Graduate Student Assistants (GAs) will meet with you on a weekly basis, individually
and/or as a group to learn about your progress and challenges in the lab and to
supportt and


GAs will assist and review your abstracts, presentations, etc. and may assign other
materials to read or complete
 Support

GAs will provide various support for you in and out of the lab, on and off campus, and
assist you in acclimating to the campus community and the Bay Area
 Mentoring

GAs will also serve as a mentor for you in a variety of ways including your educational
and career goals, graduate studies, research, etc.
 Social Activities


GAs will arrange and participate in the majority of social activities during the summer
Scholars will pay for entrance, ticket, and other fees to most of the social activities
