Thomas Farrer Hoggarth left home at about the time his
mother, Mary Farrer, died to work for his uncle William Wilson.
He was at his uncle’s farm at Leasgill (Crofts Farm) for ten
years or more before moving to Ambleside where his father
Henry had re-married in 1853 (Ann Mackereth Shaw) and
where he married Sarah Lewis in 1865.

Mother in Law Frances Martindale, aged 80, is living at
Durham Bridge in 1911.

In 1901 John William Hartley is farming at Kate Farm, Meathop.
His wife Sarah Dobson came from Holme. She is one of the five
children of William and Margaret Dobson living at 11 Church Street in
Holme according to the 1881 census. William is a farmer and one of
his farm servants is William H. Hoggarth, 16, born Manchester [this is
possibly the son of George Hoggarth & Mary Hogg of Holme]. Sarah’s
grandfather, William, of Yealand, appeared in the Ulverston Advertiser
for 27th March 1851 in a case of cows poisoned by Yew Tree leaves.
