Plessy Day Weekend 2015
New Orleans History & the Continuing Struggle for Civil Rights
Please join the Plessy & Ferguson Foundation, the NOCCA Institute, and community
partners on June 6th and 7th. We will host multiple events in celebration of the legacy of Homer
Plessy and the Citizens’ Committee’s challenge to legalized segregation in the 1890s. Events
kick-off on Saturday at noon with a free community meal and story circle lasting until 2pm at the
corner of Royal and Press Streets.
On Sunday, join us from 4 to 6 pm at Beecher Memorial United Church of Christ for archival
presentations and discussions on New Orleans History & the Continuing Struggle for Civil
Rights. Panelists include Keith Weldon Medley, A.P. Tureaud Jr., Keith Plessy and local high
school students. The Plessy & Ferguson Foundation Freedom Fighter's Award will be
presented to Mr. Jerome Smith and Attorney Willie M. Zanders, Sr.
Then, starting at 8 pm, join us again at Dauphine and Press Streets for free screenings of Phoebe
Ferguson’s documentary short, A Perfect Storm about education reform in New Orleans,
followed by the Academy Award winning film Selma.
