Home Safety Action Week

Home Safety Action Week
1-7 October 2012
It’s great to have you and your organisation involved in Home
Safety Action Week 2012! We want to help New Zealanders avoid
falling over at home. These falls can happen to anyone, and can
lead to some very serious injuries. We’ve developed a range of
printed material you can use to raise awareness and pass on some
simple solutions to Fight the 5 common home hazards.
This catalogue shows you the printed material you can order to support your Home Safety
Action Week activities.
Please note, you will not be charged for any of these materials. It’s simple to order.
Go to homesafety.co.nz to place your order now.
Ordering closes on Friday, 24 August.
In early September you will receive an electronic pack of information including statistics,
key messages, safety tips for staff emails, your intranet or customer newsletters. There will
also be ideas to engage with staff and support Home Safety Action Week.
Bulk orders
If your organisation has its own bulk distribution system and you would like to place a large
order, email [email protected] or contact your local ACC Community Injury Prevention
Consultant or Relationship Manager. Please note that bulk orders close Tuesday, 7 August.

Ladder Safety brochure – ACC4407
Cont ...
A handy guide to prevent injuries when using a ladder
at home. It’s full of practical advice and tips to help you
stay safe when using a ladder.
If you must use two hands when
working, then use another part of
the body (such as thighs, torso or
shoulder) as the third point of contact
to brace against the ladder or adjacent
structure.
• Never carry heavy or unstable items
up the ladder. Carry tools in a tool belt.
Raise or lower larger tools or materials
using a hand line.
F • Never climb higher than the third step
from the top of a straight ladder.
• If you are looking up when working
make sure you take regular breaks.
Most injuries in the home are caused by
falls – and they can be very serious. Many
occur outside, on and around ladders,
where there can be a long way to fall!
Ladder Safety
Staying safe on ladders
The good news is that almost all these
injuries can be prevented with a little care,
attention or planning ahead.
Here are some important tips to help
prevent falls when you’re using a ladder.
Even if you’re an old hand at DIY and use
a ladder all the time, please take the time
to have a read.
You never know, it might remind you to
take that one extra step that saves you,
a family member, or a friend a lot of
unnecessary pain and suffering.

This paper was manufactured using Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF) pulp sourced from sustainable, Well Managed Forests.
• Keep three points of contact on the
ladder at all times – two hands and
one foot, or two feet and one hand
while climbing, and two feet and one
hand when working.
