Mission Statement
What does SANCA stands for?
SANCA Central Rand aims to address alcoholism
and drug dependence through the provision
of specialised, accessible and affordable
developmental, prevention and treatment
services to the people, thereby enhancing the
quality of life and restoring the self-respect and
dignity of persons affected by alcoholism and
drug dependence.
SANCA stands for South African National Council
on Alcoholism and Drug
Dependence.
What does SANCA Central
Rand do?
Generally, SANCA CENTRAL
RAND Alcohol and Drug Centre
provide prevention, treatment
and aftercare service to
people and groups affected by
substance abuse.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
OF SANCA
SANCA Central rand was
founded in 1963 by a group of concerned
community leaders in Westbury (West of
Johannesburg) to address the scourge of social
problems that had manifested in the community.
Their objectives were to address these problems
that had escalated due to the misuse and abuse
of alcohol.
Their focus was particularly directed on the
following issues: Gangsterism, Domestic violence,
Abuse for women and children, School drop-outs,
as well as other criminal activities.
SERVCES OFFERED BY SANCA Central Rand
1. PREVENTION AND AWARENESS
PROGRAMME
The aim of this programme is to
provide comprehensive information on
alcohol and other drugs. This service
includes talks and presentations at
churches, community
organisations, and
private and government
institutions.
2. DIVERSION
PROGRAMME
This programme is
aimed at changing
behaviour of teenagers
who have come into
conflict with the law.
These teenagers have
already experimented
with drugs or have been
caught in possessions of
drugs.

3. OUT-PATIENT TREATMENT
OF ALCOHOL AND OTHER
DRUGS
SANCA offers out-patient
treatment programme
for the alcohol and drug
dependent persons through
therapeutic assessments,
medical assessment,
on-going therapy and
aftercare.
4. TRAINING AND
EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMES
SANCA also offers training and
educational programmes to schools,
professionals, paraprofessionals and
community groups on how to meet their
specific needs in respect of information
on alcohol and drugs.
5. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
As poverty, unemployment, crime and
abuse are problems we are faced with
on a daily basis, we provide a number of
services to communities e.g. help with
needs assessment, initiate job creation
projects and arrange skills training.
Other services include Employment
Assistance Programme (EAP), drug testing
and statutory intervention.
