Asking for Help
One afternoon a little girl decided she needed one more large rock
to complete a fort she’d been building. The other rocks had been
small enough for her to carry. This one presented a challenge. But
she loved challenges, so she set to work. The first problem was the
hill. The rocks were at the bottom, the fort at the top.
DR. GREG DAVIS
Senior Pastor
She got behind the big rock and started pushing. Didn’t budge. Then
she tied a rope around it and started pulling. Didn’t work. About
this time her mother got home from the office. She found her
daughter struggling.
The girl described the problem. Her mother asked, “What methods have you used?”
She listed all her efforts. Then her mother reminded her of how resourceful she was.
That she was confident her daughter would solve the problem.
Exasperated, the girl made a couple more attempts. Finally she went to an engineering
website. Figured out how to rig a pulley. Didn’t work.
Her mom found her in tears. She brought her some lemonade. She was ready to give up.
“Have you tried everything, honey?”
“YES. Absolutely everything.”
“No, you haven’t,” her mother said. “You haven’t tried asking for help.”
In no time the two of them rolled that rock up the hill.
Here’s the application: first, God cares about our problems, large and small.
Second, God is ready and waiting for us to ask. God wants to help.
Third, God provides human hands and hearts and shoulders and ears who care. In our
community of faith there are pastors. Loving staff. Caring members.
Fourth, remember to use all your resources.

National Day of Prayer | Thursday, May 4
We are a people who pray together for
and with each other. National Day of
Prayer calls on all people of different faiths
in the United States to pray for the nation
and its leaders. It is held annually on the
first Thursday of May, which is May 4 this
year. Broadmoor UMC will open its chapel
on May 4 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
for people to come and pray. At 12:10
p.m., those present will be lead in a time
of guided prayer by Rev. Peter Gaughan
that will last approximately 20-25 minutes.
All are welcome to come and go as their
schedule allows to light candles, write
prayers, sit in peace, and observe the
prayers offered at 12:10. Our world, our
nation, our neighbors, and we ourselves
are in need of prayer. Join us and others
across the nation on May 4 to pray.

Serve at the Common Ground Closet | Wednesday Mornings
Common Ground is local organization putting "feet to faith" in the Cedar Grove neighborhood of Shreveport. They host children's programs, mentor young people, serve a
community meal, provide food and clothing, and garden together. Broadmoor UMC is
beginning a relationship with Common Ground, and we want you to be a part of it! We
are specifically starting to serve at their closet that provides clothing for men, women,
and children in need.
We are looking to form a "volunteer staff" to help organize and sort their clothing donation closet weekly on Wednesday mornings from 7:30-9:30. Even if you can only work
once a month, we would love to have you on the team! So far, we have had one week
of touring and hearing about the program, helped with one garage sale, and worked two
weeks in the closet. It will always be a wonderful work in progress, and we would love
for you to join us in this new local mission opportunity.
If you are interested in helping, please sign up at a Welcome Desk. The Common
Ground Community Center is located at 6806 Southern (corner of Southern and 68th
Street). Contact project coordinator Diane Valentine at 617-7896 for more information.
Serve at the Allendale Community Garden
of Hope and Love
Gardening is refreshing and renewing.
We are looking for a team of gardeners to help with the Allendale Garden of
Love and Hope, where several members
served on BUMC Service Day. The purpose of the garden is to bring beauty and
share the abundance with the surrounding
neighborhood. The head gardener named
Ms. Rosie has worked in the garden for
19 years, and it is a blessing to be able to
help her. Community Renewal International sponsors the garden and volunteers.
We have dates for the Broadmoor team
to work in the garden through the fall. Join
us from 7:30-9:30 a.m. on Saturdays: May
6, June 10, July 8, August 12, September
9, and October TBA. We will meet in the
garden, located on the corner of the 1500
block of Buena Vista and N. Allen.
If you are interested in helping, please sign
up at a Welcome Desk. Contact project
coordinator Diane Valentine at 617-7896
for more information.
